Phylogeny and Classification of New World Suboscine Passerine Birds (Passeriformes: Oligomyodi: Tyrannides)

Lecythidaceae subfam. Lecythidoideae is limited to the Neotropics and is the only naturally occurring subfamily of Lecythidaceae in the New World. A subset of genera with zygomorphic flowers—Bertholletia, Corythophora, Eschweilera and Lecythis—comprises a group of about 125 species called the Bertholletia clade. A previous study based on plastid ndhF and trnL-F genes supported the monophyly of Corythophora but suggested that Eschweilera and Lecythis are not monophyletic. Using this study as a baseline, we sampled more taxa and sequenced more loci to address the taxonomic problems of the ambiguous genera and to determine relationships within the Bertholletia clade. Our results support the monophyly of the Bertholletia clade as previously circumscribed. In addition, Corythophora is monophyletic, and the two accessions of Bertholletia excelsa come out together on the tree. Results of the simultaneous analysis do not support the monophyly of Lecythis or Eschweilera. Lecythis consists of four main groups (the Lecythis pisonis, L. poiteaui, L. chartacea, and L. corrugata clades), the last of which is nested within Eschweilera, and Eschweilera consists of three clades (the Eschweilera integrifolia, E. tetrapetala, and Eschweilera parvifolia clades). We compare our results with the generic classification presented in the latest monograph of neotropical Lecythidaceae and make recommendations for a revised generic classification of the Bertholletia clade of Lecythidaceae.

During an examination of type material of the New World endomychid genus Bystus Guérin-Méneville (Anamorphinae), the type series of Alexia hirtula Kirsch from Peru was found to contain a mixture of different taxa, none of which belong to the genus Bystus, the subfamily Anamorphinae, or even the family Endomychidae. Alexia hirtula is transferred to Delphastus Casey (Coccinellidae: Microweiseinae: Serangiini), establishing the new combination, Delphastus hirtulus (Kirsch), and a lectotype is designated. Of the three paralectotypes, one appears to be conspecific with the lectotype, one is identified as an undescribed species of Microscymnus Champion (Coccinellidae: Cryptognathini), and one, a partial specimen lacking the head, pronotum, and one elytron, is identified as a species of Leiodidae in the tribe Scotocryptini, probably Aglyptinus Cockerell. A diagnosis and redescription of D. hirtulus is provided, and Gordon’s (1994) key to Delphastus is modified to accommodate the newly transferred species. The historical classification of D. hirtulus is discussed along with characters justifying its revised placement.

The checklist of the New World Melolonthinae published in 2003 by Evans is updated to 30 June 2005. Corrections and omissions to the previous checklist are also noted and necessary taxonomic changes are made. Melolontha elongata Fabricius, 1792 is designated as the type species of Philochloenia Dejean, 1833, syn. nov. thereby placing this genus as a junior synonym of Dichelonyx Harris, 1827. Phyllophaga guatemalica (Moser, 1918), syn. nov. and Phyllophaga longiclava (Moser, 1918), syn. nov. are placed in synonymy with Phyllophaga ravida (Blanchard, 1851). The Australian genus Deuterocaulobius Dalla Torre, 1912, stat. nov. is brought out of synonymy and considered the valid name for “Phyllochlaenia Blanchard, 1846.” Warwickia, nom. nov. is proposed as a replacement name for the junior homonym Benedictia Sanderson, 1939 (non Dybowski, 1875) and consequently, Warwickia pilosa (Sanderson, 1939), comb. nov. is a new combination for the single species in this genus. A brief overview of the tribal classification of Melolonthinae is presented.

Here we present a phylogenetic hypothesis for the New World suboscine radiation, based on a dataset comprising of 219 terminal taxa and five nuclear molecular markers (ca. 6300 bp). We also estimate ages of the main clades in this radiation. This study corroborates many of the recent insights into the phylogenetic relationships of New World suboscines. It further clarifies a number of cases for which previous studies have been inconclusive, such as the relationships of Conopophagidae, Melanopareiidae and Tityridae. We find a remarkable difference in age of the initial divergence events in Furnariida and Tyrannida. The deepest branches in Furnariida are of Eocene age, whereas the extant lineages of Tyrannida have their origin in the Oligocene. Approximately half of the New World suboscine species are harboured in 5 large clades that started to diversify around the Mid Miocene Climatic Optimum (16–12 Mya). Based on our phylogenetic results we propose a revised classification of the New World suboscines. We also erect new family or subfamily level taxa for four small and isolated clades: Berlepschiinae, Pipritidae, Tachurididae and Muscigrallinae.
