As higher education plays a pivotal role in the economic well-being of modern societies, universities today are faced with increasing pressure in order to improve their accountability and performance. They have to redesign the research structure to achieve the set objectives. The present survey aimed at studying the factors and related indicators that affect the effectiveness of the research structure of the universities. The sample included 274 faculty members who were selected through stratified random method at 8 branches of Islamic Azad University in Tehran province (Iran). Research questions were: a) What key Factors influence the Effectiveness of the universities’ research structure? and b) What conceptual model can be designed? Finally, in this study using a questionnaire and factor analysis technique, eight factors were identified and ranked which contribute towards the effectiveness of research structure in universities . Finally, a conceptual model has been proposed for the universities to strengthen their research structure.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop an integrated model assessing the frequency and timing between reports on the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) reporting the framework by higher education institutions (HEIs) and the relationship between the STARS score and reputation (enrollment), finances (endowment) and performance (emissions). Design/methodology/approach The development of the theoretical model is based on learning, signaling and legitimacy theories. This study collects data from the AASHE STARS to indicate the rating level of 202 HEIs, control variables, enrollment, endowments and emissions. The hypotheses were tested using generalized linear models. Findings Findings suggest that as HEIs report on their sustainability activity, they learn to report better but that there is also an “un-learning” aspect if the HEI skips reporting in a period. The results support the main hypothesis that there is a relationship between reporting and engagement with the HEIs in the form of enrollment and endowments. Finally, the findings provide evidence that the HEIs’ reporting is associated with a reduction in emissions. Practical implications The findings suggest that HEIs should develop a reporting strategy on a standardized framework such as AASHE STARs and they ought to codify the approach to learn from prior reporting. Students and alumni are increasingly seeking to engage the HEI in the sustainability process and the report is a mechanism for signaling activities. Social implications The findings suggest that AASHE STARS scores may be used by HEIs as a signaling mechanism to stakeholders of their commitment to sustainability. The signal is a mechanism to reduce information asymmetry between the HEI and stakeholders who may want more information on the institution’s attempts toward sustainability but lack access to information. Further, HEI partners have a mechanism to assess the overall level of commitment of the HEI toward sustainability and can, therefore, engage accordingly. Originality/value There has been significant work on signaling theory and sustainability. However, the relationship between STARs reporting as a signal that legitimates the HEI, learning how to report well and HEI performance has received less attention. The current study demonstrates that the STARS framework as a reporting mechanism signals the HEIs’ level of commitment to sustainability thereby legitimating it resulting in improved performance.

Differences in structural resources and individual skills contribute to social-class disparities in both U.S. gateway institutions of higher education and professional workplaces. People from working-class contexts also experience cultural barriers that maintain these disparities. In this article, we focus on one critical cultural barrier—the cultural mismatch between (a) the independent cultural norms prevalent in middle-class contexts and U.S. institutions and (b) the interdependent norms common in working-class contexts. In particular, we explain how cultural mismatch can fuel social-class disparities in higher education and professional workplaces. First, we explain how different social-class contexts tend to reflect and foster different cultural models of self. Second, we outline how higher education and professional workplaces often prioritize independence as the cultural ideal. Finally, we describe two key sites of cultural mismatch—norms for understanding the self and interacting with others—and explain their consequences for working-class people’s access to and performance in gateway institutions.

The Impact

The consequences of the restructuring of higher education in South Africa have not yet been thoroughly investigated. This study investigates the impact of the abovementioned restructuring on employee motivation (as measured by Alderfer’s ERG theory), organisational commitment and job performance. The results show that the respondents exhibit low levels of organisational commitment and low satisfaction with monetary remuneration and fringe benefits. The results, however, show high levels of satisfaction with growth factors, peer relations and performance intentions. These results are interpreted in the light of the multiple regression analyses conducted of the interrelationships among the variables. Opsomming Die nagevolge van die herkonstruksie van hër-onderwys in Suid-Afrika is nog nie deeglik ondersoek nie. Hierdie studie ondersoek die invloed wat bogenoemde rekonstruksie op die motivering (soos gemeet deur Alderfer se teorie), organisatories toegewydheid en werksprestasie van werknemers het. Die resultate toon dat die respondente lae vlakke van organisatoriese toegewydheid en lae tevredenheid ten opsigte van monetêre beloning en byvoordele tentoonstel. Die resultate toon egter hoë vlakke van tevredenheid in soverre groeifaktore, kollegiale verhoudinge en werkprestasievoornemens betref. Hierdie resultate word vertolk teen die agtergrond van veelvoudige regressie-analises wat op die inderlinge verwantskappe tussen die veranderlikes uitgevoer is.

Industry and educational institutions are increasingly dependent on each other in terms of their productivity and performance. This paper reports and analyses the findings of a survey designed to ascertain the extent of industry's support for education in India and companies' attitudes towards the provision of that support. Although various forms of business support for education are identified and discussed, the author's overall assessment indicates that, in spite of the very substantial mutual benefits of cooperation, interaction between higher education institutions and companies remains at a low level in India – and this threatens educational and industrial development. In this context, he describes the major impediments to industrial support for and involvement in educational programmes and recommends a series of policy and strategic measures for government, HEIs, and business organizations which would address the constraints and disincentives identified.

This research is to know and analyze about Work Discipline, and communication to job satisfaction and its implication to performance of field of Higher Education and High Education Office of West Java Province. The method used in this research is qualitative analysis. Methods of data collection is done by interview and questionnaire, while data processing used SPSS software version 23.00. Based on the results of research, it is found that work discipline, communication, job satisfaction and performance of employees at good level. In general, the independent variable working on job satisfaction is 0.479 or 47.90%, and communication variables to job satisfaction of 0.293 or 29.30%, and variable earnings on performance is equal to 0.783 or 78.30%. From the results of research conducted, then all the broad variables will have a significant effect on the performance of employees of Higher Education and Higher Education Department of West Java Province.

Performance Management in State Islamic Religious Colleges (PTKIN) Indonesia are still often ignoring the identification of stakeholders and the primary performance indicator of management measurement goal. The Balanced Score Card (BSC) as a management approach translates the direction of Higher Education developing into an action based on the initiatives identity number and management measurement goal systems. In the context aims to determine the implementation of the Balanced Score Card at PTKIN with four perspectives which are connected as part of the chain driving to achieve the strategic point of Higher Education and performance of higher education results model. This research is qualitative research with the technique of data collection on observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results paper shows that the Balanced Score Card is the performance integrating on management system at UIN Jakarta, UIN Yogyakarta, and UIN North Sumatera through the making of Score Cards with the processing of strategy maps to achieve its strategic point of higher education objectives. The Map Strategy is preparing as a companion model for its BSC implementation management goal of Higher Education. Balanced Score Card (BSC) sebagai sebuah pendekatan manajemen menerjemahkan arah pengembangan Perguruan Tinggi pada aksi yang dilandasi oleh identifikasi inisiatif dan sistem pengukuran. Dalam konteks ini, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui implementasi Balanced Score Card di PTKIN dalam empat perspektif yang dihubungkan sebagai bagian dari rantai pendorong untuk mencapai tujuan-tujuan strategis dan hasil capaian kinerja. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan berupa observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa BSC diintegrasikan dalam sistem manajemen kinerja di UIN Jakarta, UIN Yogyakarta, dan UIN Sumatera Utara melalui pembuatan score cards dan/atau peta strategi dalam mencapai tujuan-tujuan strategis. Kata Kunci: Balanced Score Card, Tujuan Strategies, Inisiatif, dan Indikator Kinerja
