The neurotoxic effects of seven selected Multicenter Evaluation of In Vitro Cytotoxicity programme chemicals (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, iron [II] sulphate and chloroform) were evaluated in organotypic cultures of chick embryonic dorsal root ganglia (DRG), maintained in a soft agar culture medium. Two growth parameters of neurite outgrowth from the ganglia — the mean radial length of neurites and the area of neurite outgrowth — were used to evaluate the toxicities of the chemicals. Dose-dependent decreases of both parameters were observed in all experiments. IC50 values (the concentration causing 50% inhibition of growth) were calculated from the dose-response curves established at three time-points during culture, i.e. 24, 48 and 72 hours. The lowest toxic effect was observed in cultures exposed to methanol (the IC50 ranging from 580mM to 1020mM). The highest toxic effect was observed in cultures exposed to iron (II) sulphate (the IC50 ranging from 1.2mM to 1.7mM). The results of other recent experiments suggest that organotypic cultures of DRG can be used during in vitro studies on target organ toxicity within the peripheral nervous system. Moreover, these cultures preserve the internal organisation of the tissue, maintain intercellular contacts, and thus reflect the in vitro situation, more precisely than other cell cultures.

Four cases of gonococcal pharyngotonsillitis have been presented, along with a review of the world literature. This entity is most commonly seen in those individuals practicing fellatio, i.e., females and homosexual males. The infection may be passed to the newborn by the infected genitals of the mother during birth, to the infant from adult molestation, or among sexually promiscuous children. Most gonococcal pharyngeal infections result in a carrier state, and as such, are possible reservoirs of propagated infections. When symptomatic, the most frequent complaint is a sore throat. Physical finding among symptomatic patients reveal a wide spectrum ranging from mild hyperemia of the pharynx or tonsils, to exudative tonsillitis with tender cervical lymph nodes and moderate elevation of temperature. Most authorities agree that the preferred treatment is 4.8 million units of procaine penicillin G I.M., with one gm of probenecid by mouth thirty minutes before the injection. If allergic to penicillin, tetracycline should be given, 1.5 gm by mouth stat, then 0.5 gm four times a day for a total of 9 gm. A routine blood agar culture of the throat will not reveal the presence of the gonococcus. Thayer-Martin (or Transgrow) media must be used. Failure to detect pathogenic bacteria in a routine culture may lead to either no treatment or improper treatment of a gonococcal pharyngotonsillar infection. This may result in a carrier state, or even worse, to a disseminated gonococcal infection.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of three fungicides azoxystrobin (Ortiva), hexaconazole (Hexa) and pyrimethanil (Pyrus) for their ability to inhibit the radial growth and ochratoxin A (OTA) production by five ochratoxigenic strains of Aspergillus carbonarius and A. niger previously iso-lated from Moroccan grapes. Our results showed that, the addition of the fungicides to the Czapek Yeast Autolysate agar culture medium reduced the growth of the ochratoxigenic strains. Pyrimethanil caused total inhibition of spore germination and growth of the five strains, for all dose tested. Where-as hexaconazole totally inhibited the growth of 4 strains and gave growth for the MUCL 49227 strain (2.67 mm/day) at sublethal concentration. The reduction in radial growth was less marked for azoxystrobin, with growth rate varying between 0 and 6.37 mm/day depending on the strain and the azoxystrobin concentration. Analysis of variance showed that the effect of single factors (fungicides, concentration and strain) and their interactions on growth and OTA production were highly significant (P=0.000).These findings suggest that the use of tested fungicides have to potential for reduction in production of OTA.
