The Second Excavating season at Beycesultan lasted from 1st May to 6th July, 1955. As a result of a motor accident on 30th April Mr. Seton Lloyd was unable to take charge of the work until 21st May and his place was taken by Mr. James Mellaart, Institute Fellow for 1955–56. The field staff also included Mr. G. R. H. Wright as architect and surveyor, Mrs. Wright as housekeeper and registrar, Mr. T. Burton Brown as visiting adviser, Mr. Maurice Cookson, whose services as photographer were kindly lent to us by the London Institute of Archaeology, and Mr. John Carswell as draughtsman. The Turkish Antiquities Department was represented by Bayan Nihal Dönmez, who relieved the Director of much administrative work. The expedition was once more housed in tents and rented accommodation in Menteş, village: thanks are again due to the Turkish Ministry of Education for the loan of the local school building as museum and workshop. The season's work divided itself into three distinct phases. The first part of the excavations was confined to the eastern summit of the mound, where the great Burnt Palace had been discovered in 1954 (see Fig. 1), and consisted in the successive examination and clearance of the four uppermost levels (I–IV) over an area about thirty metres square, in order to gain access to the palace beneath. This work occupied the expedition throughout the greater part of May. The second phase was concerned with the extension of the palace excavations themselves in a north-westerly direction.

Abstract The paper presents the results obtained by techno-typological analysis of a lithic assemblage from the Neolithic layers of Grotta San Michele Arcangelo di Saracena (Cosenza) together with the results of micro-wear analysis obtained from a preliminary selection of obsidian artifacts with different provenances distinguished by pXRF analysis. The site provides one of the best preserved Neolithic sequences in the area, from the earliest Impressed Wares (or Impresse Arcaiche) (early sixth millennium BC) to the Spatarella pottery style (end fifth – early fourth millennium BC). Along the Neolithic sequence, it is possible to observe some major changes within lithic resources management. In particular, it is possible to notice some techno-typological breakages between the Early Neolithic and the further stages, until the second phase of the Late Neolithic, when another rupture, corresponding to the Spatarella facies, is evident.

AbstractThis paper is a preliminary report on the eighth and final fieldwork (Spring 2006) season of the excavations at Euesperides (Benghazi). Work continued in Areas P and Q on the Sidi Abeid mound, in Area R in the lower city and on the processing of finds from the 2006 and previous seasons. In Area P excavations continued below the primary floors of the antepenultimate phase in Room 5a where a series of inter-cutting pits beneath the primary floor provided a section through the stratigraphy to natural. The results of the work showed that occupation in the sixth to fourth centuries BC was less intensive and accumulated at a slower rate than in the Hellenistic period. Three phases of early activity were represented, with the earliest levels dated to the period c. 580–560 BC. A comparable picture emerged in Area R, but in Area Q a second-phase set of buildings laid out in or after the late sixth century BC, with houses flanking the street, persisted until late in the life of the city. Excavations in Area Q Extension revealed a large circular building with an internal floor of terracotta sherds set in cement, tentatively interpreted as part of a set of public baths. A late reuse of the building was indicated by a number of plaster-lined tanks formed over the terracotta floor. The presence of the building was taken to indicate that the building and an associated street, aligned over an in-filled quarry, may have been inter-mural, suggesting that the late city was of greater size than hitherto thought.Selected finewares, coarsewares and amphorae from the excavations are presented, together with preliminary observations, resulting from the environmental sampling of occupation deposits.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to alter daily life and lead to changes in the way we spend time outside. In an effort to gather timely and relevant data on national recreation patterns before, during, and after the pandemic, the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and its academic partner, Pennsylvania State University, have been working to conduct a study that can offer guidance to land managers, recreation providers, and outdoor enthusiasts across the United States. Phase 1 of this assessment was conducted April 9th – 11th, 2020 (Rice et al., 2020). Phase 2 of this assessment was conducted April 30th – May 2nd. This second phase of research—discussed in this preliminary report— was designed to provide additional information regarding changes in recreation trends since April 9th, which provides valuable information for managing dynamic recreational use on public lands. In total, 823 outdoor recreationists were surveyed through the Leave No Trace community in a 48-hour window beginning on the morning of April 30th. The results of this second rapid assessment—complete with comparisons to Phase 1 data—will provide valuable information for managing the changing recreation use of public lands, predicting spikes in recreation, and offering insight for land managers as they work to protect the natural world. The following tables, figures, and corresponding brief descriptions are intended to provide initial results from Phase 2 of our research effort, with comparisons to Phase 1 when appropriate. Further results are forthcoming.

The article examines from various points of view the  role of the  Spanish language  in   the    Russian    system   of    primary    and  secondary education,  both  public    and   private,  paying   special   attention to the  experience of  schools participating in the  Bilingual  Sections program of the  Spanish Ministry of Education and Training. The article compares Spanish with other foreign languages in the  Russian  school system, and considers its evolution in the  timeline  and the  impact on its status of migration movements in connection with political events, commercial and student exchange,  tourism;  as well as the  impact of certain measures taken both in Russia  and in Spain. Institutions in both countries have established links to promote mutual development in terms of learning Spanish and Russian,  and the  diplomatic corps has become the   catalyst and manager of  this  dynamic.  Despite the   fact  that the   reactions  of  educational  actors  (institutions, civil society, students  and  teachers) are  varied, they  reinforce different mechanisms to gain access  to Spanish culture and business, as well as to other Spanish-speaking countries. The article also demonstrates the  current statistics and describes the  trend that the  teaching of Spanish may  follow in the  coming years due to positioning of Spanish among the  main foreign languages studied in Russian  schools.

NEW DESIGN FOR FEDERAL NETWORK OF TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATION ABSTRACT Since the year of 2003, Lula’s Government initiated actions directed to the democratization of technique education offer in the country, through a structuring plan of expansion of Federal Network of Professional and Technological Education. The first phase of the plan embraced the construction of 64 (sixty-four) new Education Units to sum up to the 140 (one hundred forty) that already existed. At the same time, the Ministry of Education started second phase of the Project, for the implantation of more 150 (one hundred fifty) new Schools, totalizing, up to 2010, the goal of 354 (three hundred and fifty-four) institutions. In this context, appears the proposal of establishing 38 (thirty-eight) Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology to integrate, from 2009, these Education Units, as well as constituting the Federal Network of Professional, Scientific and Technological Education. Each Federal Institute is structured with a Rectory and some campuses, with interdependent management between both. Territorially, to the Rectory will comprehend the strategical function of politics definition, supervision and control. To achieve it, needs an administrative structure that congregates, beyond the cabinet, pro-rectories and systemic performance directorates, being responsibility of these agencies the function of working matrically entailed to the similar units of the campuses. Each Campus, therefore, responsible for the execution of finalistic institutional objectives, needs a hybrid structuring, through the association of functional and matrical departmentalization – to make possible the dialogue and interaction of the academic area departments with the operational units of the others departments of administration areas, of education support, of extension and research. In reality, the situational arrangement of the Federal Institutes is new and characterized as proper of a network structure, to systematically integrate several organizations of teaching through a central nucleus – in national scope, through the Professional and Technological Education Secretariat of the Ministry of Education, and in regional scope, some Campuses through a Rectory. KEYWORDS: Professional Education; Expansion; Federal Network; Federal Institute.

In 1967, a fifth season of excavation was completed at Alahan. Work, which began on 5th July and continued until 29th August, was carried out by a labour force of twenty-five workmen, of whom Ahmet Kaya, Aslan Şahin and Süleyman Uysal have not missed a season since the first exploratory sounding made on the site of the Basilica in 1955. Apart from the Director and Mrs. Gough, the members of the staff were Messrs. G. Bakker, P. Pratt and R. Wylie, architects; Mrs. Bakker and Miss M. McGregor, inventory and conservation; Messrs. A. Ray and L. Thomas, site supervisors; Misses H. Cash and M. MacDonald, and Mr. P. Percival-Price, field-assistants. Bayan Nihal Dönmez represented the Ministry of Education, and to her the expedition is grateful for practical help on many occasions. Our thanks are also due to the Institute's Council of Management, to the Russell Trust and to a private subscriber in Ankara for the funds which made the season a success.Apart from the archaeological results, the year 1967 provided two further reasons for special gratification. As a recognition of Alahan's status as a major site in exceptionally beautiful surroundings (Pl. LVI), a good road has now been built up the mountain slope under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism.

Global attention is currently focussed on developing techniques to improve the thermal performance of buildings to provide indoor comfort with minimum reliance on energy load. Several studies have investigated building facade, materials used and other factors involved in building design. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of thermal insulation, shading devices, window-to-wall ratio (WWR) and a combination of these factors in a prototype school building design in the warm climate city of Taif, Saudi Arabia. The study used various methods classified into two main phases. The first phase involved on-site observation where both thermal imaging and regular cameras were used to examine the influence of orientation on glazing as a baseline. The second phase involved advanced software investigations with 2D AutoCAD, 3D Revit and computer modelling for energy evaluation and daylight factor. A detailed framework was introduced to examine current school buildings and to improve the future designs of prototype school buildings. The study revealed that a combination of applying thermal insulation along with minimising WWR is required in existing buildings within hot and dry regions. Furthermore, it was recommended that WWR should not exceed 35%, 25% and 20% for northwest, southeast and southwest building facades, respectively.
