Background: It is widely reported that exotic larvicidal fishes like Gambusia and Poecilia have adverse impact on the native aquatic fauna. The present study highlights the efficacy of two colourful native murrels, primarily designated as ornamental fish, Channa bleheri and Channa stewartii as biocontrol agent of mosquito larvae. Methods: Live specimens of Channa bleheri and C. stewartii, collected from the wetlands of Tinsukia district of Upper Assam, were assessed for their larvivorous potential at individual and group levels during day and night by dividing the specimens into two size groups. After 12 hour and 24 hour starvation, the test specimens (mean size for small group 8.67 - 9.17 cm and that of large group 11.63-13.27 cm) were given known number of mosquito larvae and recorded the consumption rate. Result: The predation rate varied from 33.3±4.36 to 71.6±5.15/min for Channa bleheri and that of C. stewartii from 16.3±0.95 to 68.2±2.77/min. In both species, smaller sized specimens were better performers as predators. Predation rate at 12 and 24 hrs of starvation and between day and night proved that these native murrels are excellent predators of mosquito larvae.

Estudos para o combate ao vetor Aedes aegypti são importantes para reduzir as incidências da Dengue, Zika e Chikungunya, responsáveis por milhares de mortes no Mundo. Este estudo hipotetiza que as ninfas de odonata influenciam no controle de larvas de Aedes aegypti com eficácia diferente entre as famílias, por terem distinta morfologia de aparelho mastigador e comportamento. O objetivo com esta pesquisa foi avaliar a eficiência de sete famílias de odonata como predadoras de Aedes aegypti, em condições laboratoriais. Ninfas foram coletadas com armadilha de rede, no Rio Poxim Açu e individualizadas, em potes plásticos, com 20 cm de diâmetro, contendo água do rio e mantidas em temperatura ambiente. Para verificar a potencialidade de predação de larva de Aedes aegypti, pelas ninfas de Odonata, tendo sido avaliada a taxa de predação de 30 larvas de mosquito, em cada pote por dia, contabilizando-se o número de larvas predadas. A média de predação pelas ninfas foi de 6,08 larvas de mosquito por dia. As famílias Aeshnidae (9,28), Libellulidae (8,37) obtiveram as maiores médias de predação por dia. Todas as famílias de odonata predaram, em pelo menos um dia, o máximo de 25 a 30 larvas, exceto Cordulidae. Portanto, os predadores da família Aeshnidae e Libellulidae foram muito eficazes no controle do Aedes aegypti e representam uma alternativa de baixo custo e de fácil aplicabilidade em cisternas e caixas de água domiciliares, que têm condições semelhantes às encontradas neste experimento. Abstract Studies of Aedes aegypti control are especially important for reducing the incidence of Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya cases that are responsible for thousands of human deaths in the world. This study hypothesizes that odonata nymphs influence the Aedes aegypti larvae control with different efficacy among their families, due to their chewing apparatus morphology and to their diverse behavior in nature. The objective was to evaluate the efficiency of seven families of odonata nymphs as predators of the Aedes aegypti larvae under laboratory conditions. Odonata nymphs of seven families were collected with a net trap at Poxim Açu River. Each nymph was placed in a 20-cm diameter plastic recipient containing river water at room temperature. In order to verify the odonata nymphs predation on the Aedes aegypti larvae, the predation rate of 30 mosquito larvae was verified on each recipient per day. The odonata nymphs presented an average predation rate of 6.08 mosquito larvae per day. The families Aeshnidae (9,28) and Libellulidae (8,37) obtained the greatest average predation rate per day. All the Odonata families predated from 25 to 30 larvae in at least one day, except Cordulidae. Therefore, the Ashinadae and libelulidae predators were highly effective on the Aedes aegypti control. Thus, they represent a low-cost alternative for Aedes control in cisterns and water tanks at home sites, which have similar conditions to the ones found in this experiment. Study to assess the larvicidal property of Lantana camara leaves against Aedes triseriatus larvae found that the ethyl acetate extract had profound larvicidal action with the crude extract having a LC50 value of 409.831ppm. GC-MS analysis of the ethyl acetate extract confirmed the presence of twenty-one compounds out of which beta-caryophyllene covered the highest percentage of the chromatogram area. Further tests with beta-caryophyllene against the mosquito larvae proved it to be the active ingredient of L. Camara with a LC50 value of 104.243ppm.

We investigated the role of socio-economic factors in the proliferation of mosquito vectors in two adjacent but socio-economically contrasting neighborhoods in Baton Rouge, LA, USA. We surveyed mosquito larvae habitat, mosquito larvae, and adult mosquitoes during the summer of 2020. We also evaluated the number of requests for mosquito abatement services in the years preceding the study for each area. While we did not find differences in terms of the most abundant species, Culex quinquefasicatus (F1,30 = 0.329, p = 0.57), we did find a higher abundance of mosquito habitats, particularly discarded tires, as well as larvae (z = 13.83, p < 0.001) and adults (F1,30 = 4.207, p = 0.049) of the species Aedes albopictus in the low-income neighborhood. In contrast, mosquito abatement requests were significantly higher in the high socio-economic neighborhood (z = −8.561, p < 0.001). This study shows how factors such as adjudicated properties, discarded tires and pest abatement requests can influence the abundance of mosquito vectors, disproportionately affecting low-income groups. This study also highlights how Aedes spp. may be better indicators than Culex spp. of socio-economic differences between nearby neighborhoods, due to their short flight range and habitat preferences, and this should be considered in future studies attempting to detect such disparities in the future.

Abstract Background Insect growth regulators (IGRs) can control insect vector populations by disrupting growth and development in juvenile stages of the vectors. We previously identified and described the curry tree (Murraya koenigii (L.) Spreng) phytochemical leaf extract composition (neplanocin A, 3-(1-naphthyl)-l-alanine, lumiflavine, terezine C, agelaspongin and murrayazolinol), which disrupted growth and development in Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto mosquito larvae by inducing morphogenetic abnormalities, reducing locomotion and delaying pupation in the mosquito. Here, we attempted to establish the transcriptional process in the larvae that underpins these phenotypes in the mosquito. Methods We first exposed third-fourth instar larvae of the mosquito to the leaf extract and consequently the inherent phytochemicals (and corresponding non-exposed controls) in two independent biological replicates. We collected the larvae for our experiments sampled 24 h before peak pupation, which was 7 and 18 days post-exposure for controls and exposed larvae, respectively. The differences in duration to peak pupation were due to extract-induced growth delay in the larvae. The two study groups (exposed vs control) were consequently not age-matched. We then sequentially (i) isolated RNA (whole larvae) from each replicate treatment, (ii) sequenced the RNA on Illumina HiSeq platform, (iii) performed differential bioinformatics analyses between libraries (exposed vs control) and (iv) independently validated the transcriptome expression profiles through RT-qPCR. Results Our analyses revealed significant induction of transcripts predominantly associated with hard cuticular proteins, juvenile hormone esterases, immunity and detoxification in the larvae samples exposed to the extract relative to the non-exposed control samples. Our analysis also revealed alteration of pathways functionally associated with putrescine metabolism and structural constituents of the cuticle in the extract-exposed larvae relative to the non-exposed control, putatively linked to the exoskeleton and immune response in the larvae. The extract-exposed larvae also appeared to have suppressed pathways functionally associated with molting, cell division and growth in the larvae. However, given the age mismatch between the extract-exposed and non-exposed larvae, we can attribute the modulation of innate immune, detoxification, cuticular and associated transcripts and pathways we observed to effects of age differences among the larvae samples (exposed vs control) and to exposures of the larvae to the extract. Conclusions The exposure treatment appears to disrupt cuticular development, immune response and oxidative stress pathways in Anopheles gambiae s.s larvae. These pathways can potentially be targeted in development of more efficacious curry tree phytochemical-based IGRs against An. gambiae s.s mosquito larvae.

In the lower Dalälven region, floodwater mosquitoes cause recurring problems. The main nuisance species is Aedes (Ochlerotatus) sticticus, but large numbers of Aedes (Aedes) rossicus and Aedes (Aedes) cinereus also hatch during flooding events. To increase understanding of which environments in the area give rise to mosquito nuisance, soil samples were taken from 20 locations from four environmental categories: grazed meadows, mowed meadows, unkept open grassland areas and forest areas. In each location 20 soil samples were taken, 10 from random locations and 10 from moisture retaining structures, such as tussocks, shrubs, piles of leaves, logs, and roots. The soil samples were soaked with tap water in the lab, and mosquito larvae were collected and allowed to develop to adult mosquitoes for species identification. Fewer larvae hatched from mowed areas and more larvae hatched from moisture retaining structure samples than random samples. The results showed that Aedes cinereus mostly hatch from grazed and unkept areas and hatched as much from random samples as from structures, whereas Aedes sticticus and Aedes rossicus hatched from open unkept and forest areas and hatch significantly more from structure samples. When the moisture retaining structures in open unkept areas where Aedes sticticus hatched were identified it was clear that they hatched predominantly from willow shrubs that offered shade. The results suggest that Ae. sticticus and Ae. cinereus favor different flooded environments for oviposition.
