Marine mammals such as whales and dolphins have been known for a long time to host a very specific epizoic community on their skin. Less known however is the presence of a similar community on the carapaces of sea turtles. The present study is the first describing new taxa inhabiting sea turtle carapaces. Samples, collected from nesting olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) on Ostional Beach (Costa Rica), were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Two unknown small-celled gomphonemoid taxa were analysed in more detail and are described as two new genera, closely related to other gomphonemoid genera with septate girdle bands, such as Tripterion, Cuneolus and Gomphoseptatum. Chelonicola Majewska, De Stefano & Van de Vijver gen. nov. has a flat valve face, uniseriate striae composed of more than three areolae, simple external raphe endings, internally a siliceous flap over the proximal raphe endings and lives on mucilaginous stalks. Poulinea Majewska, De Stefano & Van de Vijver gen. nov. has at least one concave valve, uniseriate striae composed of only two elongated areolae, external distal raphe endings covered by thickened siliceous flaps and lives attached to the substrate by a mucilaginous pad. Chelonicola costaricensis Majewska, De Stefano & Van de Vijver sp. nov. and Poulinea lepidochelicola Majewska, De Stefano & Van de Vijver sp. nov. can be separated based on stria structure, girdle structure composed of more than 10 copulae, raphe structure and general valve outline. A cladistics analysis of putative members of the Rhoicospheniaceae indicates that the family is polyphyletic. Chelonicola and Poulinea are sister taxa, and form a monophyletic group with Cuneolus and Tripterion, but are not closely related to Rhoicosphenia, or other genera previously assigned to this family. Features used to help diagnose the family such as symmetry and presence of septa and pseudosepta are homoplastic across the raphid diatom tree of life.

Two new Eulophinae genera, Elasmarion and Celesterion, are described based on material from sweep-net and malaise trap samples mainly from Costa Rica. The new genera are each represented by a single species, both described here, E. longipes and C. reticulatum spp. nov. The material for both groups is abundant and strongly female biased, 119 females and two males in Elasmarion, and 63 females and two males in Celesterion. Elasmarion is similar to the Old World genus Eulophomorpha Dodd, and a table with distinguishing characters is included, it also has some morphological features similar to the genus Elasmus Westwood. Celesterion does not show close morphological similarity to any genus in the Eulophinae. The biology is unknown for both species.

Two new genera and species of mites of the family Euzerconidae are described. Trinizercon atyeoi Hunter and Rosario, n. gen., n. sp., is described from specimens collected from the beetle Passalus (Passalus) interruptus (Lineo) (Passalidae) in Trinidad. Etazercon starri Hunter and Rosario, n. gen., n. sp., is described from specimens collected from the beetle Passalus (Passalus) jansoni (Bates) (Passalidae) in Costa Rica.

The year 1986 gave us Madonna's True Blue, Geraldo Rivera opening Al Capone's vaults, and a new taxonomy of anoles (Guyer and Savage, 1986). Each of these greatly anticipated events began with considerable promise but ended up adding nothing of depth to the culture of the time. Madonna's best work was behind her, Capone's vaults were a letdown, and the proposed anole taxonomy was unsupported and poorly executed (Cannatella and de Queiroz, 1989; Williams, 1989), but was mostly done in by the paucity of data available at the time. In the ensuing years, Madonna showed some staying power and Geraldo reinvented himself, but the erection of a handful of nonmonophyletic genera was not enough to achieve the apparent goal of preserving Savage's (1973) genus Norops as a valid name for anole lizards with transverse processes on their posterior caudal vertebrae (Etheridge, 1959). The genera Dactyloa, Ctenonotus, et al. lived on in Savage's (2002) excellent Costa Rica guide but were mostly ignored by those not working in Costa Rica.

New Neotropical cicada genera and species are described. Dazollina petilunca n. gen., n. sp. (Zammarini: Dazina) is described from Costa Rica and Guatemala, Muraoides costaricensis n. gen., n. sp. (Hyantiini) is described from Costa Rica. An updated generic key to the Dazina and Hyantiini are provided.

Giesberteclipta and Thomasella, two new genera of Rhinotragini Thomson, 1861 (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae), are described and illustrated. Six new species are also described and illustrated: Acyphoderes violaceus from Costa Rica; Ischasioides giesberti from Ecuador, and Oxylymma pallida, Pseudagaone williamsi, Stultutragus tippmanni and S. ventriguttatus from Brazil. Keys are provided for the known species of Pseudagaone Tippmann, 1960, Giesberteclipta, and Oxylymma Pascoe, 1859 and for parts of Ischasioides Tavakilian & Peñaherrera-Leiva, 2003 and Stultutragus Clarke, 2010.  The following new combinations are proposed: Giesberteclipta costipennis (Giesbert, 1991); G. monteverdensis (Giesbert, 1991); Thomasella igniventris (Giesbert, 1991), and Stultutragus romani (Aurivillius, 1919). The following three new country records are reported: Oxylymma durantoni Peñaherrera-Leiva & Tavakilian, 2003 (Brazil), Oxylymma sudrei Peñaherrera-Leiva & Tavakilian, 2003 (Brazil), and Ommata (Eclipta) faurei Peñaherrera-Leiva & Tavakilian, 2003, all from Brazil.

The addition of species to the genus Beckerina Malloch (1910) progressively eroded its diagnosis to the point that it became increasingly difficult to recognise its boundaries. An amended diagnosis is provided and three new genera proposed, along with the following new combinations for species formerly included in Beckerina. Brownphora sinefurca (Borgmeier) gen. nov., comb. nov., Enderleinphora fuscohalterata (Enderlein) gen. nov., comb. nov. and Mallochphora orphnephiloides (Malloch) gen. nov., comb. nov. Enderleinphora hansoni sp. nov. is described from Costa Rica.
