Grizzly Bears and Resource-Extraction Industries: Habitat Displacement in Response to Seismic Exploration, Timber Harvesting and Road Maintenance

Sandbar Lake Provincial Park (Sandbar Lake) covers 8053 ha in the boreal forest in northwestern Ontario. Within the park boundary are natural forests representative of those in the region, as well as forests that are heavily disturbed from resource extraction activities, which are prevalent in northwestern Ontario. The lichen biota in this part of the boreal forest is known to be rich and abundant, but lichen diversity is also known to be negatively impacted by disturbances (e.g., timber harvesting, mining, and climate change). Therefore, lichens can be used to monitor the effects of these disturbances, but baseline data are required. Here, we present the results of the first detailed inventory of the lichens and allied fungi of Sandbar Lake. We report 139 species in 69 genera from 16 sites that represent all macrohabitats present in the park. Seven species have a provincial conservation status rank from S1 to S3 (critically imperilled to vulnerable), and one species, Arthrosporum populorum, has previously been collected only once in northwestern Ontario. Our results fill biogeographic gaps for many species and allow lichens to be used as biomonitors during further study at Sandbar Lake. We show that Sandbar Lake has important conservation value, and our data provide an opportunity for further study in an area with no previous research on lichens.

Abstract The incidence and severity of black stain root disease (BSRD) were evaluated in a two-stage sample of 500 precommercial-aged Douglas-fir plantations on 5 Resource Areas of the Medford District, Bureau of Land Management. Black stain was widely distributed throughout the western half of the District. Nearly 19% of the susceptible-aged (10- to 30-yr-old) plantations were infected with black stain, but mortality losses were low. In both the extensive and intensive surveys, BSRD was more often distributed in precommercially thinned than unthinned plantations. Black stain occurred with significantly greater frequency adjacent to roads and major skid trails than in the main body of plantations. Roadside strips displayed significantly more injured trees and recent soil disturbance than the main body of plantations. BSRD incidence was high in comparison with other root diseases, but there was minimal impact to precommercial stand management. Low disease severity is somewhat unique among managed forests within this area of known high BSRD hazard. The lack of widespread damage from BSRD was associated with a lack of extensive tractor yarding and an apparent lack of precommercial thinning. Forest managers within high BSRD hazard areas can maintain low mortality levels by minimizing site disturbance and tree injury associated with timber harvesting, road building, and road maintenance activities and by timing precommercial thinning to avoid vector insect emergence and flight periods. The causes and rates of grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) mortality in a radio-marked population in southeastern British Columbia were studied for 9 years during a period of timber harvest, gas exploration, and outdoor recreation, including grizzly hunting. During 110 bear-years of radio tracking 55 radio-collared grizzly bears and their dependent offspring, one bear with a functioning radio collar died from natural causes and eight others from human intervention; in addition, four dependent offspring were thought to have died. Excluding trap-related mortalities, the best estimate for the annual survival rates were as follows: 0.82 for cubs, 0.88 for yearlings, 0.93 for subadults, and 0.93 for adults. Of the eight bears killed by human intervention, two were killed by legal harvest, five by illegal harvest (one of these in a trap), and one was killed in a trap by another bear. No mortalities were directly attributable to industrial activities. Resource extraction industries do contribute to grizzly bear mortality indirectly through the construction of roads, which provide easy access to hunters, poachers, and settlers. Road access planning and postoperational control of vehicles are recommended management actions.
