Transnational education (TNE) is predicted to play a large role in the future landscape of international higher education. Binational universities are transnational, higher education institutions formed by two governments constituting a collaborative form of TNE. Despite career factors being one of the primary motivators for participating in TNE (Knight & McNamara, 2014), we know very little about student expectations and experiences with career attainment at binational universities. This study explored the role of labor market outcomes at the binational Turkish-German University. A convergent parallel mixed methods case study design was adopted, and data collection included a survey of students and graduates (n=571) as well as interviews with key stakeholders (n=4). This research enlarges the debate on the relation between international experience and employability and provides new insight into the labor market relevance and returns of higher education programs.

AbstractThe success of higher education graduates’ transition to the labor market is analyzed in this paper. A series of representative factors which influence the success rate on the labor market were analyzed through an exhaustive case study among graduates from West University of Timisoara. The results show a high level of satisfaction amongst graduates, despite the high level (over 40%) of total incongruence (vertical and horizontal) between the degree’s field and the actual workplace. We can also assert that the graduates’ insertion in the labor market is a real success, since most of them are able to get a job in less than 6 months from graduation (58.5%), even more do so 12 months post-graduation (83.9%).

The global labor market in general and the Israeli market in particular have been experiencing considerable changes in recent decades, affecting the supply of jobs in various occupations. There seems to be an association between changes in the supply of jobs in the labor market and shifts in the demand for higher education. Examination of two case studies in the Israeli economy shows a bidirectional interaction between the labor market and the system of higher education. In one case, the growing supply of jobs in the field of computers and engineering was found to result in an increasing demand for academic education in this discipline. In the second case, the growing demand for academic education in law resulted in a flooded labor market in this industry with bad effects for the industry. The public policy formed in Israel to regulate the labor market and the system of higher education is aimed at the short term and makes do with examining actual circumstances retrospectively and attempting to improve them by directing students to various disciplines in order to meet the needs of the labor market or correct its failures. It does not, however, examine future trends and try to identify prospective needs and faults that can be predicted in the present.
