The article is devoted to one of the problems of foreign language education – the definition of the role of interpretation in preparing students of special (language) directions to participate in the dialogue of cultures. Interpretation is considered as a phenomenon and as a way of comprehending reality, which allows the subjects of the dialogue of cultures to reach mutual understanding. The main characteristic of interpretation, which is necessary for the purposes of foreign language education, is its psychological character. It is determined by the psychology of the author, the psychology of the work, as well as the psychology of the reader-interpreter. It is proved that the interpretation of a work of art, which has universal, historical and personal plans, has huge epistemological and axiological possibilities. They activate the entire educational potential of interperetation (educational, developmental, cognitive, and educational). Russian Russian poet A. A. Fet (1820–1892) uses the poem “Wir saßen am Fischerhaus” by the famous German poet and publicist Heinrich Hein (1797–1856) and the translation of this poem into Russian to illustrate the interpretation technology. The poem is considered as a space of personal meanings of the author. They are the ones that are subject to interpretation and bring the reader-interpreter back from the poet's world to the modern real world. And the real world is full of unexpected cultural facts, closely related to the content of the work of G. Heine, with distant Lapland and the life of modern lapps. Thus, interpretation is presented as an educational strategy. Together with the strategies of contextualization, philologization and argumentation, it ensures the achievement of the main goal of foreign language education – the creation of an individual who can act as a genuine subject of the dialogue of cultures. The article also emphasizes the importance of the teacher as the organizer of the educational process and the subject of the dialogue of cultures.

Drawing on the concept of policy appropriation, this study investigates how different education stakeholders in a rural region of Colombia perceive foreign language education policies, and how these perceptions shape the way they recreate these reforms at the ground level. Contributing to the field of language policy analysis in Colombia and abroad, findings in this study not only provide knowledge on foreign language policymaking processes in rural areas in Colombia, but also shed light on the active role played by different stakeholders in the continuous recreation and appropriation of language education reforms.

This article aims to identify the definition and the role of personally active approachin future teacher’s foreign language professional competence. Initially, it observes the relevance of the issue of foreign language education and new paradigm in education system globally and in Kazakhstan. Also, the author analyzes different scholars’ opinions about a professionally competent foreign language teacher and his characteristics, supporting it with state and international educational documents. The article also observes the definitions of personally active approach and its usage in education. Furthermore, the article deals with arguments proving the role of personally active approach in future teachers’ foreign language professional competence formation. Analyzing the data from various scientific papers, articles and books, state and international educational standards, the author makes a conclusion in the end of the article.

It has been a long tradition in Finland to use locally published textbooks in primary foreign language education. The books have been designed for linguistically homogenous groups of students, which explains why Finnish, as the learners’ L1, is the instructive metalanguage chosen for the EFL activity books. However, the growing number of immigrant children in the Finnish educational system raises the question to what extent these activity books can serve the needs of linguistically more diverse groups of learners. The connection between the two languages is so strong that Finnish seems to serve as a precondition for the acquisition of English. The high proportion of tasks requiring fluency in Finnish and the exclusive use of the language in the instructions might position Finnish as a gatekeeper language and thus hinder the acquisition of English in the case of non-Finnish students. The background trigger for the research was the case of an immigrant child, who had problems solving the English workbook exercises due to his weak Finnish skills. The paper investigates the role of Finnish in six EFL activity books that are used in Finnish comprehensive education to see to what extent it is present in the books, what functions it takes and what difficulties the lack of fluency might cause in task comprehension and solution. The analysis will be supplemented by interviews made with teachers of English and a textbook author to explore their views and experience regarding the use of the majority language in the activity books.
