On Two-Dimensional Fluid Motion Through Spouts Composed of Two Plane Walls

The steady, laminar, two-dimensional wake above a thin vertical isothermal heated plate cooled by free convection was investigated theoretically and experimentally. The system of partial differential equations governing the fluid motion and heat transfer in the vicinity of the plate and in the near wake region was formulated and solved using finite difference techniques. Using air, the temperature and velocity profiles in the wake region were measured experimentally using a laser holographic interferometer and a constant temperature hot wire anemometer.


(1) It is not so long ago that it was generally believed that the "classical" hydrodynamics, as dealing with perfect fluids, was, by reason of the very limitations implied in the term "perfect," incapable of explaining many of the observed facts of fluid motion. The paradox of d'Alembert, that a solid moving through a liquid with constant velocity experienced no resultant force, was in direct contradiction with the observed facts, and, among other things, made the lift on an aeroplane wing as difficult to explain as the drag. The work of Lanchester and Prandtl, however, showed that lift could be explained if there was "circulation" round the aerofoil. Of course, in a truly perfect fluid, this circulation could not be produced—it does need viscosity to originate it—but once produced, the lift follows from the theory appropriate to perfect fluids. It has thus been found possible to explain and calculate lift by means of the classical theory, viscosity only playing a significant part in the close neighbourhood ("grenzchicht") of the solid. It is proposed to show, in the present paper, how the presence of vortices in the fluid may cause a force to act on the solid, with a component in the line of motion, and so, at least partially, explain drag. It has long been realised that a body moving through a fluid sets up a train of eddies. The formation of these needs a supply of energy, ultimately dissipated by viscosity, which qualitatively explains the resistance experienced by the solid. It will be shown that the effect of these eddies is not confined to the moment of their birth, but that, so long as they exist, the resultant of the pressure on the solid does not vanish. This idea is not absolutely new; it appears in a recent paper by W. Müller. Müller uses some results due to M. Lagally, who calculates the resultant force on an immersed solid for a general fluid motion. The result, as far as it concerns vortices, contains their velocities relative to the solid. Despite this, the term — ½ ρq 2 only was used in the pressure equation, although the other term, ρ ∂Φ / ∂t , must exist on account of the motion. (There is, by Lagally's formulæ, no force without relative motion.) The analysis in the present paper was undertaken partly to supply this omission and partly to check the result of some work upon two-dimensional potential problems in general that it is hoped to publish shortly.

A variational principle is derived for two-dimensional incompressible rotational fluid flow with a free surface in a moving vessel when both the vessel and fluid motion are to be determined. The fluid is represented by a stream function and the vessel motion is represented by a path in the planar Euclidean group. Novelties in the formulation include how the pressure boundary condition is treated, the introduction of a stream function into the Euler–Poincaré variations, the derivation of free surface variations and how the equations for the vessel path in the Euclidean group, coupled to the fluid motion, are generated automatically.

This study focuses on two-dimensional fluid flows in a straight duct with free-slip boundary conditions applied on the channel walls y =0 and y =2 πN with N >1. In this extended wall-bounded fluid motion problem, secondary fluid flow patterns resulting from steady-state and Hopf bifurcations are examined and shown to be dependent on the choice of longitudinal wave numbers. Some secondary steady-state flows appear at specific wave numbers, whereas at other wave numbers, both secondary steady-state and self-oscillation flows coexist. These results, derived through analytical arguments and truncation series approximation, are confirmed by simple numerical experiments supporting the findings observed from laboratory experiments.


The following investigation is based on the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz theory of discontinuous stream-line motion of a fluid moving through an orifice or past a barrier. The problem is two-dimensional and the fluid is assumed to be frictionless and incompressible. The question has been discussed fully by Sir G. Greenhill, F. R. S. in his report to the Advisory committee for Aeronautics, and in his book on the Dynamics of Mechanical Flight. He considers at length the fluid motion past a barrier, but in what follows a bent barrier will be considered.

The transient response of a two-dimensional floating runway subject to dynamic moving load due to airplane landing and take-off is studied in this paper. This hydroelastic problem is formulated by directly coupling the structure with fluid, by use of the Level I Green-Naghdi theory for the fluid motion and the Kirchhoff thin plate theory for the runway. The coupled fluid-structure system, together with the appropriate jump conditions are solved by the finite difference method. The results, including hydroelastic deformation of the runway and the drag force on the airplane are predicted and compared with the available results. Favorable agreements are observed. Parametric studies are carried out to identify the important factors for the design of floating runways.

The prediction of roll motion of a ship with bilge keels is particularly difficult because of the nonlinear characteristics of the viscous roll damping. Flow separation and vortex shedding caused by bilge keels significantly affect the roll damping and hence the magnitude of the roll response. To predict the ship motion, the Slender-Ship Free-Surface Random-Vortex Method (SSFSRVM) was employed. It is a fast discrete-vortex free-surface viscous-flow solver developed to run on a standard desktop computer. It features a quasi-three-dimensional formulation that allows the decomposition of the three-dimensional ship-hull problem into a series of two-dimensional computational planes, in which the two-dimensional free-surface Navier–Stokes solver Free-Surface Random-Vortex Method (FSRVM) can be applied. In this paper, the effectiveness of SSFSRVM modeling is examined by comparing the time histories of free roll-decay motion resulting from simulations and from experimental measurements. Furthermore, the detailed two-dimensional vorticity distribution near a bilge keel obtained from the numerical model will also be compared with the existing experimental Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) images. Next, we will report, based on the time-domain simulation of the coupled hull and fluid motion, how the roll-decay coefficients and the flow field are altered by the span of the bilge keels. Plots of vorticity contour and vorticity isosurface along the three-dimensional hull will be presented to reveal the motion of fluid particles and vortex filaments near the keels.

A train of small-amplitude surface waves is incident normally on an arbitrary arrangement of thin barriers lying in a vertical plane in deep water. Each barrier is allowed to make small rolling or swaying oscillations of the same frequency as that of the incident wave. The boundary-value problem for the consequent fluid motion, assumed two-dimensional, is solved exactly using a technique which enables the amplitudes of the scattered waves far from the barriers to be readily determined. Reference is made to the associated wave radiation problem and to the calculation of forces and moments on the barriers.
