Himanthalia elongata (=H. lorea (L.) Lyngb.), although a common brown seaweed on parts of the British coast, does not occur in sufficient quantities to render it of commercial importance. As a result, the work of Colin & Ricard (1930) appears to be the only investigation on the chemical composition of this species. Their material was collected in August 1929, but they give no indication of the size or condition of the plants which were analysed.

Specimens of two populations of Canistrocarpus cervicornis were collected from two different localities on the Brazilian coast about 2000 kilometers apart. The CH2Cl2 extracts were analyzed by 1H NMR and HRGC-MS techniques. A total of fourteen diterpenes were detected, eight dolastanes (1–8) and five secodolastanes (9–13). The results obtained revealed a typical pattern for C. cervicornis, which did not vary according to the geographical region.

The chemical composition of the brown alga Cystoseira crinita Bory from the Eastern Mediterranean was investigated. Fourteen sterols have been identified, five of them for the first time in algae. The structure of one new sterol was established. The origin of seven sterols with short side chains was discussed. In the volatile fraction 19 compounds and in the polar fraction 15 compounds were identified. The main lipid classes were isolated and their fatty acid composition was established.
