Abstract Orbitacolax bispinus sp. nov., Orbitacolax leptoscari (Yamaguti, 1953), Paraorbitacolax sphyraenae Izawa, 2021, and one male specimen of a Bomolochidae sp. are (re)described. The male and copepodid V female of O. leptoscari, and the male and copepodid V male of P. sphyraenae are described for the first time for the respective species. A description performed in Izawa (2020, 2021) that the maxilliped of the female bears a dorsal process in Orbitacolax and Paraorbitacolax spp., was wrong and is herein corrected.

In this paper, we decompose sustained attending behavior into components of continuous attention maintenance and attentional transitions and study how each of these components develops in young children. Our results in two experiments suggest that changes in children's ability to return attention to a target locus after distraction (“Returning”) play a crucial role in the development of sustained attention between the ages of 3.5-6 years, perhaps to a greater extent than changes in the ability to continuously maintain attention on the target (“Staying”). We further distinguish Returning from the behavior of transitioning attention away from task (“Leaving”) and provide evidence that Leaving is more strongly influenced by bottom-up factors, while Returning is invariant to these same bottom-up factors, suggesting a potentially greater contribution of top-down factors in Returning. Overall, these results (a) suggest the importance of understanding the cognitive process of transitioning attention for understanding sustained attention and its development, (b) provide an empirical paradigm within which to study this process, and (c) begin to characterize basic features of this process, namely its development and its relative dependence on top-down and bottom-up influences on attention.

Among actinopterygian fishes, holosteans are the phylogenetically closest group to teleosts but they have been much less studied, particularly regarding the neurochemical features of their central nervous system. The serotonergic system is one of the most important and conserved systems of neurotransmission in all vertebrates. By means of immunohistochemistry against serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine), we have conducted a comprehensive and complete description of this system in the brain and retina of representative species of the 3 genera of holostean fishes, belonging to the only 2 extant orders, Amiiformes and Lepisosteiformes. Serotonin-immunoreactive cell groups were detected in the preoptic area, the hypothalamic paraventricular organ, the epiphysis, the pretectal region, the long and continuous column of the raphe, the spinal cord, and the inner nuclear layer of the retina. Specifically, the serotonergic cell groups in the preoptic area, the epiphysis, the pretectum, and the retina had never been identified in previous studies in this group of fishes. Widespread serotonergic innervation was observed in all main brain regions, but more abundantly in the subpallium, the hypothalamus, the habenula, the optic tectum, the so-called cerebellar nucleus, and the area postrema. The comparative analysis of these results with those in other groups of vertebrates reveals some extremely conserved features, such as the presence of serotonergic cells in the retina, the pineal organ, and the raphe column, while other characteristics, like the serotonergic populations in the preoptic area, the paraventricular organ, the pretectum, and the spinal cord are generally present in all fish groups, but have been lost in most amniotes.
