A combustor utilizing concepts of swirling flow and orifices in order to optimize mixing rates was developed for application in low-emissions automotive gas turbine engines. Low emissions were obtained at one operating condition with a fixed-geometry configuration. Addition of a variable opening in the dome of the combustor provided low emissions over the expected operating range for an automotive gas turbine engine. Emissions of NOx obtained on a simulated Federal driving cycle were near the Federal statutory limit, and emissions of CO and HC were considerably lower.

The concentrations of total mercury (range 0.1-1.5 g /g) in 40 individual snapper, C. auratus, caught in two commercial fishing areas in Victorian waters were adequately correlated with fork length by a power-law relationship. From further relationships established between length and total weight, and between filleted weight and total weight, the mean mercury concentration in the edible flesh of this species was estimated for each of the six years (1973-78) for which information on the length-frequency distribution was available for the Victorian commercial catch. The annual estimates ranged from 0.47 to 0.52 g/g wet weight, and 45-52% of the edible flesh had values exceeding the Victorian statutory limit of 0.5 g/g. Various management options available to health and fisheries agencies are discussed, and the methods of calculating the important parameters corresponding to these options are described. For example, graphs are presented from which can be read a legal maximum length of landed snapper, designed to reduce the mean mercury concentration of the catch to below a nominated level.

Harmonic distortion is one of the most important power quality issues in third rail electrification systems. The use of rectifiers and inverters in the third rail system can inject a significant amount of harmonic distortion to the electrical network. This paper aims to investigate the harmonic distortions for a DC urban third rail system at various operating conditions. The electrical network of Mass Rapid Transit Line 2 (MRT 2) Malaysia is modelled using ETAP software. The model had considered the effect of the inter-phase transformer in the 12-pulse rectifier. The current injection method is used to measure harmonic distortion at Point of Common Coupling (PCC) at the 132 kV and 33 kV buses. A normal and degraded operating conditions of power supply are investigated. From the simulation results, it is found that the 11th and 13th order harmonics have exceeded the statutory limit at 33 kV network for the normal operating condition. For the degraded operating condition, only the 11th harmonic order has exceeded the statutory limit. Keywords: Harmonic Distortion; DC Urban Rail; Various Operating Conditions

With ever increasing use of semiconductor devices and information technology (ICT) equipment in the industry, homes and offices, power quality is gaining attention to both industry and the electric utility. Power voltage quality cause huge economic losses to businesses all over the world. It is estimated to cost industry and commerce about €100 billion per annum in European Union, since voltage quality problem is one of the major power quality disturbances. This paper presents an investigative a study of the 11/0.4 kV, low voltage electrical distribution network and analyzes voltage unbalance. It recommends an effective method of improving the voltage profile and reducing the voltage unbalance to acceptable standard. The network was modelled using distribution network standard parameters for low voltage distribution network using MATLAB/Simulink sim power system tool box. The simulation results show that the percentage voltage unbalance, correct voltage profile and minimum voltage drop of 0.5 km distribution feeder line is of standard acceptable statutory limit, hence the distribution line operates at optimum performance. However, it is also established that the voltage profile for distribution network feeder lengths of 0.8 km to 5 km for balanced and unbalanced distribution lines from the beginning to the customer terminal of the distribution lengths are less than the acceptable allowable limit of – 5 %, of the nominal voltage value, hence voltages are inadmissible for customers use. Moreso, the percentage voltage unbalance, voltage profile and voltage drop on 0.8 km to 5 km distribution feeder line are all less than standard acceptable statutory limit, hence the distribution line operates below optimum performance. It was established that mitigating these problems require the electricity distribution company to install an effective voltage boosting devices along the network lengths in order provide admissible, permissible and normalize end users standard acceptable voltage.

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English. This article explores prominent arguments in favor of and against extending the current 14-day statutory limit on the maintenance of human embryos. I discuss the history of the 14-day limit and the reasons behind the decision to opt for a compromise between competing moral views. I then argue that the ISSCR's guidelines for extending the 14-day limit are not a valuable tool, despite their potential to contribute scientific knowledge. The importance of respecting the 14-day rule should be acknowledged by ethics committees in the current research ethics climate of mainland China.

Levels of Cd and Pb in adductor muscle, gonad and other tissues (i.e. viscera, mantle and gill) of the scallop (Pecten alba) collected from four sites of Port Phillip Bay, Australia were determined. Cd in gonad and other tissues (3.8 ± 0.1 and 3.76 ± 0.69 μg/g dry wt. respectively) were similar but significantly higher than that in the adductor muscle (2.71 ± 0.3 μg/g dry wt.). Pb in gonad and other tissues (18.75 ± 3.88, 14.06 ± 0.72 μg/g dry wt. respectively) were also significantly higher than that in the adductor muscle (5.54 ± 0.78 μg/g dry wt.). The results indicated that Cd and Pb are mainly sequestered in gonads and other tissues but not adductor muscle. The mean concentration of Cd in all tissues from all sites were under the Australian statutory limit. Although levels of Pb in adductor muscle from all sites were also below the limit, levels of Pb in edible parts (gonads and adductor muscle) of scallops from Williamstown and Frankston were over the Australian health standard. The level of Pb was 2.5 to 4.5 times higher than that of Cd in the same tissue type. Concentrations of both metals in scallops tend to decrease from north to south and east-west, and correlated with known point source discharges in the catchment area of the Bay.

<p>The use of nitrogen fertilizers is one of the main effects for the accumulation of nitrates in plants. Conventional agriculture, in comparison to integrated and organic farming, causes greater environmental pollution and poorer quality of crops. Within the framework of the research, we studied the influence of the method of cultivation on the content of nitrates in the samples of lettuce (<em>Lactuca sativa</em> L.). The samples were received directly from growing areas from different parts of Slovenia and analysed in the laboratory for the nitrate content (NO3-) according to the accredited method. The samples from conventional cultivation showed the highest sample representation (51 %), with values in the highest concentration range (1000 - 2500 mg of NO3- kg-1, one sample exceeded 2500 mg kg-1 fresh mass). Within the framework of integrated cultivation, there were less such samples (34 %), and among the samples from organic cultivation no sample exceeded 1000 mg of NO3- kg-1. Of 88 analysed samples, one sample exceeded the statutory limit value applicable to lettuce of the type Iceberg ('Ljubljanska ledenka'). On average, the Iceberg samples contained more nitrates than other types of lettuce.</p>
