The purpose of this paper is to minimize products' distribution costs for a multinational company located in Brazil, observing the different ICMS tax structures. This research was about a metallurgical industry company, and delivers its products through an outsourced company for interstate highway transportation. In this case study, a transshipment model was developed for determining if some distribution centers (DCs) are going to be used or not, because, despite of a greater distance, increasing freight cost, the state benefits for ICMS tax could decrease total cost. Study results suggest that using some DCs may help decrease total distribution cost because of ICMS tax impact. It also suggests that the distribution of imported products is cheaper than the national ones, without considering its purchase and fabrication costs. The proposed approach can help Brazilian or multinational companies to support logistic decisions, which could be useful given the Brazilian transportation context.

Transportation method is a method used to manage the distribution of sources that provide the same product, to places that require optimally so that the cost of distribution issued is minimal. This method can be used to determine the most effective allocation of goods from a source to a destination at the most possible optimal cost. This research was conducted on Bulog Divre of East Java with Case Study of Bulog Sub-Divre Sidoarjo for several rice distributions located in the district in Sidoarjo. The aims of this research is to determine whether the Transportation Method can provide an efficient solution of costs on the distribution of prosperous rice in the region of Sidoarjo. The method used in this research is VAM (Vogel’s Aprroximation Method) method used to analyze the initial fiscal solution, and enhanced by MODI (Modified Distribution Method) method to analyze the most optimal cost. From the calculation by transportation method, it is found that the optimum cost is lower than the calculation of the company, where the cost obtained by transportation method is Rp.85.186.035,750,- while the cost of the company calculation is Rp.87.209.690,750. Thus the use of transportation methods can save RASKIN distribution costs of Rp.2.023.655,000, -.

The purpose of this study was to improve the usability of the Approved Supply List, an alphabetical directory of chemical substances containing a series of entries each having a number of standard elements. The original directory consisted of two printed volumes in different formats and involved a two-stage look-up procedure using both volumes. Three new single-volume alternatives were devised, each of which allowed any substance to be looked up alphabetically by name in one operation. These were compared with the original using a timed look-up task and in-depth interviews with a panel of 24 regular users of the directory. Results showed that all three new versions were used almost twice as fast as the original, and were preferred. An A4 layout with two sequences of entries per page was selected for further development, and alternative treatments of typographic detail were assessed by a further 12 users. The improved usability of the final result was accompanied by a reduction of around 45 per cent in the number of pages in the directory, representing considerable savings in paper and distribution costs. The development and testing of alternative prototypes with a panel of users led to a design solution that could not have been arrived at simply by analysis of problems with the original version.

AbstractUsing interviews with former militants and previously unpublished documents, this article traces the genesis and internal dynamics of the Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (People's Revolutionary Army, ERP) in El Salvador during the early years of its existence (1970–6). This period was marked by the inability of the ERP to maintain internal coherence or any consensus on revolutionary strategy, which led to a series of splits and internal fights over control of the organisation. The evidence marshalled in this case study sheds new light on the origins of the armed Salvadorean Left and thus contributes to a wider understanding of the processes of formation and internal dynamics of armed left-wing groups that emerged from the 1960s onwards in Latin America.

Abstract Culture shapes our basic sensory experience of the world. This is particularly striking in the study of religion and psychosis, where we and others have shown that cultural context determines both the structure and content of hallucination-like events. The cultural shaping of hallucinations may provide a rich case-study for linking cultural learning with emerging prediction-based models of perception.

Abstract Hoerl and McCormack demonstrate that although animals possess a sophisticated temporal updating system, there is no evidence that they also possess a temporal reasoning system. This important case study is directly related to the broader claim that although animals are manifestly capable of first-order (perceptually-based) relational reasoning, they lack the capacity for higher-order, role-based relational reasoning. We argue this distinction applies to all domains of cognition.
