Communicative competence is the ability to send messages which promote attainment of goals while maintaining social acceptability. Competent communicators attempt to align themselves with each others goals and methods to produce a smooth, productive and often enjoyable dialogue. The aim of this research was to investigate self-perceived communicative competence (SPCC) of students of Engineering Management in General English and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). A longitudinal study was carried out starting with the first year students at the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad and was repeated with the same sample of students during their second and third year of study. Participation was voluntary and took place during regular class time. The measure of communicative competence employed was the Self-perceived Communication Competence Scale. The results of the study indicated that differences in SPCC between the years do exist. The SPCC gradually improved between the first, the second and the third year. The research was also motivated by gaining better overview of the teaching activity. An anonymous questionnaire provided many useful hints and ideas for further work and thus, language teacher made a thorough analysis of the overall teaching procedure. However, it is essential to get some feedback and talk to students in order to evaluate both them and ourselves as well as the teaching syllabus.

The paper considers an important pedagogical problem in the sphere of foreign language teaching, i.e. increasing the level of students communicative competence. Case study is a tool for solving this task. The research aim is to develop a set of communicative cases in English for solving difficult professional situations, the implementation of which will contribute to the development of students communicative competence. The following methods are used in the research: analysis of modern scientific and methodological literature on the problem of research; testing; monitoring the effectiveness of students work when using the developed set of communicative cases; statistical data processing. There were elaborated and tested four cases. The unifying topic of them is Difficult professional situations. The choice of the topic can be explained by a stimulating effect of difficult situations in a persons life. The content of each case embraces both productive and receptive skills. The approbation took place at Chelyabinsk State University within the framework of the discipline Foreign language (Applied Mathematics and Informatics group of specialties, the profile of Information and Management Technologies). The testees are the first-year students. One of the cases is presented here as a sample. A particular attention is paid to the study of the influence of difficult situations on human behavior. The paper contains a description of the stages of work on a case, criteria for the materials of cases, an analysis of the skills and abilities being formed, as well as recommendations for working with them. The practical significance of the study lies in the fact that the results of the research can make foreign language teaching more effective.

Since 2010 a survey has been conducted among first-year students about sources of information which influence the decision of undertaking field studies in Safety Engineering, Management Engineering and Logistics in the Faculty of Engineering Management at Poznan University of Technology. The goal of these analyses is both to assess the effectiveness of promotion and also show trends in the use of diverse channels of information transfer of studies. The results of the investigation show that internet promotion via university and faculty website plays the dominant role but also direct promotion, such as opinion of older friends, is crucial. Furthermore, from year to year the analyses indicate the significant increase of official media and reveal that the prospective students rely on a few sources of information simultaneously.

Scheduled class time for students in tertiary language classes is limited, and is likely insufficient in itself to enable students to attain second language mastery (Nunan, 1989). Provision of language practice can be expanded outside regular class time through various means, including self-access centers. However, without effective marketing and management, and effective teaching staff, such facilities risk low participation rates. The current paper discusses the provision of an English language conversation lounge facility at a Japanese university in the light of a 69% increase in student attendance for the year 2015-16. The discussion is initially situated in the need for extra language study outside regular class time. A brief description of the language center is then given. The focus of the present paper is to note recent changes, and to consider effective practice for increasing attendance and for improving participation.

Abstract University students need to have ability in more than one language in order to foster the transmission of knowledge and research, and so consolidating a multilingual Higher Education. In the context of Melilla (University of Granada), this requirement is added to the plurilingualism in the city (a large majority of the population is bilingual in Spanish and Tamazight). This investigation aims at describing the plurilingual reality of first-year students, as well as the different socio-linguistic variables that could account for results. Data obtained in several tests and questionnaires, with 206 subjects, determine that a clearly plurilingual profile exists among the participants, although the great challenge is centred on reaching communicative competence in a foreign language sufficient to become independent users.

This article discusses psychological characteristics of communicative and speech competence of the agriculture faculty students. The authors pay attention to the study of students communication skills in the process of interaction, their ability to translate meaning, skills of information interpretation and effective meaning transfer. The study involved 120 students aged 17 to 23 years (M=20.75, SD=2.25 (37% men). Methods were used: a survey – “Communicative competence” of L. Michelson in the modification of Yu.Z. Gilbukh; testing – subtest No. 6 of the Wechsler test; analytic tasks – a method of supplementing / completing / restoring a speech utterance, a classification method; statistical methods (descriptive statistics , Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test). The study found that first-year students differ from senior students in communicative competence. The speech competence of graduate students in a qualitative aspect is better developed, however, it is distorted by the influence of personal characteristics and the situation. The research prospects are aimed at studying the differences in speech and communicative competence of students who completed training courses on the development of these abilities. It is also promising to study the characteristics of the process of meaning, as variables in the formation of speech and communicative competence.

A tanulmányban részletesebben közölt eredményeink hozzájárulnak annak a feltevésnek a bizonyításához, miszerint az előteszteken elért eredmények segítenek előrevetíteni a záróvizsga eredményeit. --- Initial tests as students’ performance predicting equipment The use of online testing provides a new perspective in the pedagogical evaluation process, increasing the number of people being tested and the number of examinations to be carried out. The aim of our research was to examine whether student performance could be predicted in an offline environment with initial online tests. The research was carried out among first-year students of the Hungarian Language Teacher Training Faculty of the University of Novi Sad. The sample consisted of the first-year students enrolled in the academic year courses (N=134). The specific goal of the survey was to study whether the results of the pop quizzes, which were evaluated with online summary tests, applied in the teaching of digital generations, and predicted the achievements measured with paper-based tests. On the basis of the research it can be claimed that the performance of the students fluctuated in the pre-tests and did not progress gradually. However, they achieved higher scores in the final test than in the pre-tests. Our results contribute to confirming the hypothesis that the students’ achievements in the pre-tests help predict those of the final tests. This paper reports on changes in the motivation and out-of-class time allocation to English by students at one university in Western Japan following curricular revision. Changes to the English curriculum made beginning in the 2012 academic year included a redistribution and increase in writing class hours, a shift to ebooks for first-year content-based materials, an introduction of an online extensive reading program for first-year students, and the implementation of receptive and productive vocabulary testing in first- through third-year courses. Data from a motivational survey in Japanese and time use diaries were collected from participants in 2018 and compared to previous data from 2011. No significant difference was found between the two groups in the participants’ motivational profiles or amount of out-of-class time allocation to English. Some important differences were found in how time was allocated, yet total study hours outside-of-class fall short of program and governmental expectations.
