Background/Aim. It is a general opinion that the biggest number of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) develops with the malignant alteration of colorectal adenomas (adenoma carcinoma sequence). Malignant potential of adenoma is in the function of its size, histological structure and the grade of dysplasia. An adequate analysis of colorectal adenomas helps their definition and timely removal, which significantly decreases carcinoma incidence. Mucin analysis can provide results which support the adenoma carcinoma sequence theory. The aim of the study was to present histochemical characteristics of adenomas and emphasize the significance of these analyses for the precise adenoma definition. Methods. This prospective study included analysis of 117 colorectal adenomas obtained by transcolonoscopic biopsy or polipectomy in 82 patients. The biopsy samples and the removed polyps were coloured by hematoxilin-eozin (HE) staining and histochemical stainings by Periodic Acid Schiff (AB-PAS) and High Iron Diamine/Alcian blue (HIDAB; pH=2.5) to prove mucins. Results. Sulphomucins are more often found in adenomas of the left colon than of the right one (p < 0.001). Sialomucins are more reactive in adenomas of the right colon (p < 0.001). Sulphomucins are more reactive in adenomas of < 10 mm diameter (p < 0.05). The reactivity of all mucins is in negative correlation with the degree of dysplasia (p < 0.001). There is a significant difference in the reactivity of sialomucins in adenomas of the same histological type but different degree of dysplasia (?2 = 25,743, df = 6, p < 0.001). Conclusion. The difference in the presence of mucins between adenomas of the left and right colons supports the theory of adenoma carcinoma sequence, since adenomas of the right colon are more protected by sialomucins and therefore less malignantly altered, which is consistent with CRC topography. Histochemical analysis of colorectum is significant for more accurate gradation of dysplasia and confirmation of malignant alteration. The negative correlation between the degree of dysplasia and the production of mucin indicates the significance of the degree of dysplasia in malignant potential of colorectal adenomas.

A 61-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of reduced vision, redness and pain in the right eye. Examination revealed a bandage contact lens (BCL) in situ with diffuse, pigmented deposits. On removal, the underlying cornea was found to be clear. He had been prescribed the BCL 6 months ago following a deep-seated corneal foreign body removal and was unable to follow-up subsequently. The BCL was sent for microbiological and histopathological evaluation. The culture revealed growth of Cladosporium spp, a dematiaceous fungi. Periodic acid–Schiff staining revealed infiltration of pigmented fungal filaments into the substance of the BCL.While contact lens deposits are a frequent finding, fungal deposits are seldom noted. Irregular follow-up and improper lens maintenance are significant risk factors for the same. Early identification and subsequent removal of the lens is vital to prevent infection of the underlying ocular structures.

Aim: We aimed to investigate how bilateral renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) damage affects the ovaries as a distant organ and the effects of melatonin (MEL), curcumin (CUR) and melatonin+curcumin (MEL+CUR) treatments on I/R damage. Material and Method: 42 female Wistar rats were used in the study. Rats were divided into 6 groups and study was designed as follows: Control group (G1) – opening and closing the abdomen only (sham surgery group) –, I/R group (G2) – 45 min ischemia followed by 2 h reperfusion –, I/R+MEL group (G3) – 45 min ischemia, intraperitoneal (i.p) 20 mg/kg MEL injection 5 min before reperfusion, followed by 2 h reperfusion –, I/R+CUR group (G4) – 45 min ischemia, 5 min before reperfusion i.p 200 mg/kg CUR injection and then 2 hours reperfusion –, I/R+MEL+CUR group (G5) – 45 min ischemia, 5 min before reperfusion i.p 20 mg/kg MEL and 200 mg/kg CUR injection, followed by 2 hours reperfusion –. At the end of the reperfusion period, the rats were sacrificed. Right ovaries were removed from the peritoneum and fixed. After fixation and follow-up, tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin&eosin (H&E), Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)+Hematoxylin (PAS+H) and Masson’s trichrome stains. Pathological changes were scored and statistically evaluated. Results: Compared to the control group, there was a decrease in hemorrhage, vascular congestion, follicular degeneration, inflammation, interstitial edema, vasodilation and growing follicle numbers in all groups; these changes were severe in the G2 group; Mild to moderate severity was observed in the G3, G4 and G5 groups. Conclusion: Renal I/R damage significantly affects the ovaries histopathologically. MEL, CUR, and MEL+CUR partially preserve the histological structure, but MEL treatment seems to be more effective than CUR treatment.

An extremely rare case of non-mucinous lepidic-predominant invasive adenocarcinoma (LPA) showing extensive aerogenous spread with a pneumonic presentation is reported. A 73-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of an infiltrative shadow on chest xray. Chest computed tomography revealed extensive ground glass opacities in the right lower lobe, which was accompanied by infiltrative shadow with a pneumonic presentation. Invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma was presumed, and a partial resection of the right lower lobe was done. Histopathological examination revealed lepidic growth-predominant invasive adenocarcinoma with Clara type tumor cells, and there were innumerable aerogenous metastases also consisting of Clara cells. Because Alcian Blue and periodic acid-Schiff staining disclosed no mucus, the tumor was diagnosed as a non-mucinous LPA. The patient showed a poor response to 5 courses of pemetrexed, and she died one year after the diagnosis due to cancer progression. Nonmucinous LPA showed a rare presentation characterized by extensive aerogenous spread followed by a poor prognosis.

We describe herein the clinical, endoscopic, computed tomography (CT), pathologic, and microbiologic features of an infection caused by an under-recognized fungal pathogen, Flavodon flavus, in a 25-y-old Australian Quarter Horse. The horse had a unilateral obstructive nasal mass, resulting in stertor and dyspnea. On endoscopy, the mass was tan, multinodular, and completely obstructed the nasal passage. CT analysis revealed a large, soft tissue–attenuating and partially mineralized mass in the right nasal passage and dorsal-conchofrontal sinus, expanding into adjacent paranasal sinuses with associated bone lysis and rhinosinusitis. Histopathology of the mass on 2 occasions revealed suppurative inflammation initially, and pyogranulomatous inflammation subsequently. The inflammatory reaction surrounded numerous spherical fungal structures (~60–80 µm diameter) that stained positively on periodic acid–Schiff and Grocott methenamine silver stains. PCR for the fungal internal transcribed spacer 1 and 2 regions followed by Sanger sequencing on a cultured isolate identified the agent as F. flavus, which has only been reported previously as pathogenic in one horse in the United States, to our knowledge. Previous reports described this fungus as a nonpathogenic, environmental commensal fungus associated with insects and plants.

This study was carried out for the evaluation of the prevalence rate and the pathology of various lesions in the confiscated livers of slaughtered Azeri buffaloes at Urmia Abattoir, Northwest Iran. Livers of 306 Azeri buffaloes were inspected grossly during five months according to their color and consistency changes in Urmia Abattoir. Among the inspected carcasses, livers of 28 buffaloes had various lesions. The collected tissue samples of confiscated livers were placed in 10% buffered formalin as a fixative solution in order to prepare pathologic sections with a thickness of 6 μm. The sections were stained by haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and periodic acid schiff (PAS) methods. The most common pathologic changes in the confiscated buffalo livers were fatty change (46.4%), hepatitis and cholangitis (42.9%), and bile duct hyperplasia (39.3%) respectively. The results of this study have shown that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) between hepatic congestion and sex. In addition, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between hepatic lesions and age. The results of this study have revealed that fascioliasis has an important role in the creation of some hepatic lesions such as bile duct hyperplasia, fatty change, and hepatitis in buffaloes. Since various hepatic lesions can reduce buffalo productions and has negative influence on animal reproduction, it is necessary to pay more attention to accurate performing of antiparasitic program and the evaluation of possible role of poisonous plants, heavy metals, and mycotoxins in the generation of hepatic lesions of buffaloes.

This study was aimed to investigate the morphology, growth, histological structure and development of the spleen of the Chinese yellow quail at different ages(from 0 to 38 weeks). The yellow Quail spleen was spherical, brownish red, located at the right dorsal of the junction of the muscle stomach and glandular stomach. The absolute quality, length and width of the spleen gradually increased with age, reaching a maximum for each of these measurements at the age of 6 weeks and then remainied unchanged between 10 and 26 weeks of age. Finally, these measurements of the spleen were no significant difference at 30 weeks of age compared to at 34 to 38 weeks (P>0.05). Although, these measurements were found to gradually decrease during 30-38 weeks of age, the decrease was not obvious. The basic structure of the spleen included red pulp, white pulp and the edge area. In addition, the average area and diameter of the splenic nodules, the white pulp ellipsoid and the periarterial lymphatic sheath gradually increased, reaching maximum sizes at the age of 26 weeks. It was seen that a sustained developmental period occurred at 0-6 weeks of age and a maturation period occurred at 10-38 weeks during the development of quail spleen.

Purpose To report a case of congenital phakomatous choristoma (PC) of the eyelid, a rare tumor of lenticular anlage in the subcutaneous tissue and dermis. Case A boy had a mass in the right lower eyelid near the inner canthus at birth. At age 10 months, the tumor was excised. Results The tumor cells showed intense immunoreactivity positive for S-100 protein, vimentin, and periodic acid-Schiff. Keratin markers, epithelial membrane antigen, glial fibrillary acidic protein, muscle specific actin, and epithelial membrane antigen were negative. The histopathologic features were consistent with those of a PC. Conclusions This histopathologic and immunoreactivity study supports the proposal that PC is a rare entity of lenticular anlage origin. Only 18 such cases have been described previously.

Abstract Background Linked color imaging (LCI) is a newly developed image-enhancing endoscopy technology that provides bright endoscopic images and increases color contrast. We investigated whether LCI improves the detection of neoplastic lesions in the right colon when compared with high definition white-light imaging (WLI). Methods Consecutive patients undergoing colonoscopy were randomized (1:1) after cecal intubation into right colon inspection at first pass by LCI or by WLI. At the hepatic flexure, the scope was reintroduced to the cecum under LCI and a second right colon inspection was performed under WLI in previously LCI-scoped patients (LCI–WLI group) and vice versa (WLI–LCI group). Lesions detected on first- and second-pass examinations were used to calculate detection and miss rates, respectively. The primary outcome was the right colon adenoma miss rate. Results Of the 600 patients enrolled, 142 had at least one adenoma in the right colon, with similar right colon adenoma detection rates (r-ADR) in the two groups (22.7 % in LCI–WLI and 24.7 % in WLI–LCI). At per-polyp analysis, double inspection of the right colon in the LCI–WLI and WLI–LCI groups resulted in an 11.8 % and 30.6 % adenoma miss rate, respectively (P < 0.001). No significant difference in miss rate was found for advanced adenomas or sessile serrated lesions. At per-patient analysis, at least one adenoma was identified in the second pass only (incremental ADR) in 2 of 300 patients (0.7 %) in the LCI – WLI group and in 13 of 300 patients (4.3 %) in the WLI – LCI group (P = 0.01). Conclusions LCI could reduce the miss rate of neoplastic lesions in the right colon.

ABSTRACT: Giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is a wild mammal distributed in Central and South America; nowadays, it is classified as an endangered species. Research about the macroscopic and histomorphological aspects of its respiratory tract is scarce, and, sometimes, it limits the treatment provided to sick animals and impairs species preservation. Thus, the present study aims to describe the macroscopic and microscopic morphology of its lower respiratory tract, including trachea and lungs. To do so, 12 adult giant anteaters from “Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres de Goiânia” (CETAS-GO), Goiás State, Brazil, were used in the research after natural death or euthanasia. Three of these animals were used for macroscopic assessments; they were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and dissected. Trachea and lung tissue samples were collected from nine animals right after death and fixed in 10% buffered formalin for histomorphological analysis; they were processed, embedded in paraffin, and inked with hematoxylin-eosin (HE), periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), and Masson’s trichrome. The macroscopic analysis showed that the trachea in this species is proportionally short and presents from 19 to 27 tracheal cartilages. The right lung presents four lobes and the left one, two. The microscopic analysis evidenced respiratory epithelium of the ciliated cylindrical pseudostratified type, without evident goblet cells in the mucosa layer of the trachea and bronchi. The pulmonary visceral pleura is thick, similar to other large domestic mammals - complete septa extend from the pulmonary visceral pleura. In conclusion, the macroscopy and histomorphology of giant anteater’s lower respiratory tract, represented by trachea and lungs, are similar to that of other domestic and wild mammals. Pulmonary histomorphology is mainly similar to that of pigs and ruminants: it has thick visceral pleura that emits complete septa of conjunctive tissue, which enable lobular parenchymal architecture.
