Introduction. Functional consequences of posterior tooth loss are multiple; late and inadequate rehabilitation lead to further collapse of stomatognathic system, which is especially distinct in elderly population. Aim of this paper is to present advantages and disadvantages of different modalities of prosthetic treatment of shortened dental arch in elderly patients. Treatment with overdentures are convenient in this population because it is non-invasive and reversible. Periodontal problems and root caries are main complications of this treatment, but denture relaying after extraction and easy conversion into complete dentures facilitate resolving this complications. Removable partial dentures are one of the mostly indicated treatments for shortened dental arch. They improve masticatory efficiency, but disadvantages are in inferior aesthetic characteristics and comfort. Mechanical failures can be avoid by detailed analyze and correct planning. Treatment of shortened dental arch with fixed partial denture with distal extension can be very convenient solution for elderly patient. Osseointegration process and implant treatment promises every day more in prosthetic rehabilitation of elderly. Relayed prosthetic rehabilitation is recommended, not because of longer process of ossteointegration, but because of delayed recovery of soft tissues and general health condition of elderly. Conclusion. Each of before mentioned therapy modalities have its advantages and disadvantages in meaning of technical procedure, duration in function, possible complications and patient's comfort and satisfaction. In elderly patients, possible complications are more complex; therefore treatment must be done quickly, efficiently, and having in mind patient's general and oral health condition, level of cooperation and economic status.

Abstract Introduction: Socioeconomic status is an important determinant of health condition of an individual or a family. Many tools are being used to assess the socioeconomic status. Each of the scales have their own advantages and disadvantages. But an appropriate and a standardized tool is yet to be developed Objectives: To compare the standard of living based on different socioeconomic scales in a semiurban area of Mangalore and to assess the appropriateness of socioeconomic scales to be used in a semiurban area of Mangalore Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted in households of Kuthar and Manjanady villages of Dakshina Kannada district from June- August 2014. Questionnaire method was used to avail information about the socioeconomic status of the study population. The data was analysed using SPSS 16 software. Results: Majority (70%) of the study population belonged to class IV of kuppuswamy scale. Whereas according to Modified BG Prasad scale majority of the population belonged to class III (35%) and class II (28%). According to Pareek's scale around 92% of population belonged to class IV. But when standard of living was assessed majority of them (62%) had high standard of Living. Conclusions: We found that Standard of living is the better option in assessing the socio-economic status of a household as compared to all other scales whether be it urban, rural or semi urban.

The stomatognathic system is responsible for complex vital functions such as chewing, deglutition, respiration and phonation. Food breakdown is one of the masticatory functions, which enables reducing the attrition against the oral soft tissues and increasing the surface contact of food particles with digestive secretions, thus leading to satisfactory and rapid physiological processes. The methods of evaluation the masticatory efficiency are restricted to electromyography, sieving and clinical observation. However, the validity of these methods has been questioned due to the complexity of the procedures, variances in the material used and inaccuracy of methodologies. This study presents a new method in which a capsule of a synthetic material using fuchsine-containing granules was devised. Such capsules were submitted to several laboratory tests in order to determine their resistance and absorbency. Ten calibrated individuals were instructed to chew the capsules. Masticatory efficiency was determined by analyzing fuchsine concentration in a solution obtained from chewed granules measuring the absorbance at 546 nm. The method was found to be fast, simple, reproducible, inexpensive and efficient and can be used as a complementary evaluation of the masticatory efficiency in different situations.

Abstract Background: elderly patients who spend long periods hospitalised or those who are in a situation of institutionalisation represent a risk group in this regard, since many of them suffer a degree of dependence and need help to perform the basic personal care tasks. It is therefore important to learn more about the oral health status of this group of patients in order to make a proper assessment of the situation as well as to develop protocols for its management. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review to ascertain the oral health status of elderly patients institutionalised or hospitalised for a long period of time. Methods: a systematic review of the literature published in three different databases (PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library) was conducted, with 12 different combinations of keywords based on the following selection criteria: studies published in the last 5 years, in English and/or Spanish and/or Portuguese, with samples of ≥30 patients, performed in patients older than 65 years, admitted to any type of institution and/or care centre for at least 7 days and in which the state of hard and/or soft tissues of the oral cavity were assessed in some way. The selected articles were subjected to a thorough analysis. Results: The search strategy covered 1,014 articles: 689 from Pubmed and 325 from Cochrane Library. After applying the eligibility criteria, five articles were selected for our review. The level of evidence of the articles was3, with a sample consisting of 773 patients in which most of them were women with an average age older than 70 years old. Conclusions: the oral health of patients aged more than 65 is worse than that of the rest of the population. Long-term in hospitals or being institutionalised in a retirement home makes this group susceptible to a worsening of their oral health status. It is necessary to develop protocols for the oral health care of these patients, accompanied by training programmes for the personnel.
