Green hydroxyapatite ceramics were obtained by cold uniaxial and isostatic pressing of hydrothermally synthesized powders, pure hydroxyapatite and hydroxyapatite doped with Ag+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions. The ceramics were conventionally and microwave sintered and analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The effect of doping on the mechanical properties of the obtained hydroxyapatite/tricalcium phosphate ceramics was examined by comparing their average grain size, porosity and values of the hardness and fracture toughness. The results showed that doping with Cu2+ ions caused the lowest porosity of the ceramics and the highest values of hardness and fracture toughness. The ceramics obtained from hydroxyapatite doped with Ag+ and Zn2+ ions exhibited worse mechanical properties due to the higher porosity even in the case of microwave sintering, which provide denser ceramics than conventional sintering.

Al2O3-TiC-ZrO2ceramic composites (ATZ) were fabricated by hot-pressed sintering. The phases and microstructure of the composites were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The relative density and mechanical properties (flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vicker’s hardness) of the composites were tested. The results show that the microstructure of the composites was the gray core-white rim. With the increase of sintering temperature, the relative density and mechanical properties of the composites increased first and then decreased. The composite sintered at 1705°C has the highest synthetical properties, and its relative density, flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness are 98.3%,970MPa,6.0 MPa•m1/2and 20.5GPa, respectively.

In this work, ?-tricalcium phosphate (?-TCP) was successfully prepared by the thermal transformation of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) precursor. ?-cyclodextrin (?-CD) was used for preparation of ACP precursor and played an important role in designing its special structure. The phase composition and microstructures of the obtained ?-TCP at different annealing temperature were analysed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope, and confirmed that ?-TCP can be prepared at 650?C for 3 h using ACP as precursor, which is much lower than the phase transition temperature of ?-TCP. Mechanical properties were tested 24 h after mixing the obtained ?-TCP with 30 wt.% of deionised water. The compressive strength and the flexural strength were 26.4MPa and 12.0MPa, respectively. The flexural strength was higher than that of ?-TCP prepared by other methods.

The effect of strontium (Sr) addition (0.2 at.%) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Nb-12Si-22Ti alloys were studied. Microstructure of the alloys was observed by scanning electron microscope, and their phase compositions were analyzed with X-ray diffraction and Electro-Probe Microanalyzer. The room temperature fracture toughness was measured. The results indicated that the phases of Nbss and Nb3Si were presented in Nb-12Si-22Ti alloys. However, with the Al and Sr addition, the alloys were composed of Nbss and β-Nb5Si3. Compared with the Nb-12Si-22Ti alloys, the value of room temperature fracture toughness increased about 46% and 73% with the addition of Al and Sr alloy, respectively. The relationship between the microstructure and the mechanical properties was discussed.

In this paper, Mechanical alloying (MA) and field activated and pressure assisted synthesis (FAPAS) were used for preparing the ultra-hard, super-abrasive AlMgB14-xTiB2 composite ceramic. The samples were fabricated at 1500 under a pressure of 60 MPa. The microstructures and compositions of samples were observed and determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was indicated that addition of TiB2 was effective for increasing both quantities. A maximum Vichers hardness of 38.5GPa and a fracture toughness of 3.85MPam½ of AlMgB14 reinforced with 70 wt.% of TiB2 were achieved. Abrasion wear tests showed that adding TiB2 would improve the wearability obviously.

The addition of h- BN to a polycrystalline Si3N4 was to increase the fracture toughness and other mechanical properties such as flexural strength and hardness of the material. The hot pressed samples were prepared from the mixture of α-Si3N4, AlN, MgO and h-BN. The composite contained from 0 to 2 wt.% BN powder with sintering aids (9% AlN + 3% MgO). The transparency, mechanical properties and microstructure of hot pressed polycrystalline Si3N4-BN composite materials were investigated by UV/VIS spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The transparency decreased with increasing the content of h-BN into Si3N4.

The effect of the neodymium content on mechanical properties of the electro-brush plated nanoAl2O3/Ni composite coating was investigated in this paper. The microstructure and phase structure were studied with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The hardness and abrasion properties of several coatings with different neodymium content were studied by nanoindentation test and friction / wear experiment. Results show that the coatings are much finer and more compact when the neodymium was added, and the hardness and abrasion property of the coatings with neodymium were improved obviously. Besides, the small cracks conduced by the upgrowth stress in the coatings were ameliorated when the rare earth neodymium was added. The improvement mechanism was further discussed.

The super-tough bio-based nylon was prepared by melt extrusion. In order to improve the compatibility between bio-based nylon and elastomer, the elastomer POE was grafted with maleic anhydride. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were used to study the compatibility and micro-distribution between super-tough bio-based nylon and toughened elastomers. The results of mechanical strength experiments show that the 20% content of POE-g-MAH has the best toughening effect. After toughening, the toughness of the super-tough nylon was significantly improved. The notched impact strength was 88 kJ/m2 increasing by 1700%, which was in line with the industrial super-tough nylon. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were used to study the crystallization behavior of bio-based PA56, and the effect of bio-based PA56 with high crystallinity on mechanical properties was analyzed from the microstructure.

Calcium phosphate cements have bioactivity and osteoconductivity and can be molded and replace portions of bone tissue. The aim of this work was to study the obtainment of α-tricalcium phosphate, the main phase of calcium phosphate cement, by wet reaction from calcium nitrate and phosphoric acid. There are no reports about α-tricalcium phosphate obtained by this method. Two routes of chemical precipitation were evaluated and the use of two calcinations temperatures to obtain the phase of cement. The influence of calcination temperature on the mechanical properties of cement was evaluated. Cement samples were characterized by particle size analysis, X-ray diffraction, mechanical strength and scanning electron microscopy. The results demonstrate the strong influence of synthesis route on the crystalline phases of cement and the influence of concentration of reactants on the product of the reaction, as well as, on the mechanical properties of cement.

By means of optical microscopy(OM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),And tensile test, Mechanical Properties of hot rolled transformation -induced plasticity (TRIP) steels which were prepared through three different coiling temperature was investigated. Result reveals that the formability index of the experimental steel descends when the coiling temperature becomes low. Different coiling temperature has greater impact on retained austenite. Amount and carbon content of retained austenite in the experimental steel get less with lower coiling temperature.
