Introduction A retrospective study of Rigid Esophagoscopy, with the suspect of foreign body, was performed in General Hospital Zrenjanin 'Djordje Joanovic', at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology during the period of 1988 - 2007. Results and discussion The result of 517 esophagoscopies performed in the above period was 203 (39.26%) foreign bodies, with the average of 7,8 annually per 100.000 inhabitants. The patients age ranged from 1 to 91 years, (X = 48.98). Considering the gender, there were 95 male patients (46,79%), and 108 female patients (53.21%). The highest number of foreign bodies was found in the patients from the age group 60-69, (43/22.15%). According to the structure type of foreign bodies the most frequent were bones of animal origin (86/42.36%), followed by meat bolus (67/33%), metal coins (23/11.33%), and bodies of vegetable origin (14/6.89%). Metal coins were most frequently found in the age group 1-9. In regard to the level at which a foreign body was found (described in 157 cases, (77.30%)), 94 (59.87%) were found at the pharyngoesophageal junction, 58 (36.94%) were found in middle constriction of oesophagus, and in the area of diaphragmatic constriction and cardia there were 5 (3.18%) cases. The efficiency of removing foreign bodies by rigid esophagoscopy in the above mentioned sample was 99.01% (201/203). In 2 cases (0.99%), due to the impaction of foreign body, the patients were referred to the higher referent tertiary unit institution. Conclusion Foreign bodies represent a constant casuistics in Zrenjanin Municipality, dominantly connected to work of an otorhinolaryngologist on duty. Rigid esophagoscopy is safe and efficient diagnostic and therapeutic method.

We discuss clinical symptoms and radiological findings of variable esophageal foreign bodies as well as therapeutic procedures in Caucasian pediatric patients. A retrospective study of 192 cases of suspected esophageal foreign bodies between 1998 and 2010 was conducted. Data were statistically analyzed by chi-square test. A foreign body was removed from a digestive tract of 163 children aged 6 months to 15 years (mean age 4.9). Most objects were located within cricopharyngeal sphincter. Dysphagia occurred in 43%, followed by vomiting (29%) and drooling (28%). The most common objects were coins. Plain chest X-rays demonstrated aberrations in 132 cases, and in doubtful situations an esophagram test was ordered. In the group of thirty-seven patients whose radiograms were normal, esophagoscopy revealed fifteen more objects, which were eventually successfully removed. No major complications occurred. Esophagram should be a second X-ray examination if an object is not detected in plain chest X-ray. We recommend a rigid esophagoscopy under general anesthesia in doubtful cases as a safe treatment for pediatric patients.

A case of multiple esophageal foreign bodies, which were retrieved successfully by rigid esophagoscopy in a 1-year old child is being reported. There are few cases of multiple esophageal foreign bodies in children reported in the literature; this case was unique in presentation as there was no history of foreign body ingestion. This case also highlights the serious neglect present in our society towards children of lower socio-economic strata despite this child being the 1st child in the family.

Abstract Background: The purpose of our study was to assess the frequency of occult foreign body aspiration (FBA) and to evaluate the diagnostic difficulties and therapeutic methods for these patients. Methods: Between May 2000 and May 2020, 3557 patients with the diagnosis of FBA were treated in our department. Thirty-five patients with occult FBA were included in this study. A retrospective analysis of medical records was performed. Results: Twenty-three male patients (65.7%) and 12 female patients (34.3%) were hospitalized due to occult FBA. The average age was 3.60 years (range 9 months-12 years). Most of the patients were younger than 3 years old (n=25, 71.4%). Coughing (n=35, 100%) and wheezing (n=18, 51.4%) were the main symptoms and signs. All the patients were found to have a FBA under the fiberoptic bronchoscope. The most common organic foreign bodies were peanuts (n=10) and the most common inorganic foreign bodies were pen caps (n=5). The extraction of foreign bodies under rigid bronchoscopy was applied successfully in 34 patients. Only one patient needed a surgical intervention. Conclusions: Occult FBA should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic or recurrent respiratory diseases that are poorly explained, even in the absence of a previous history of aspiration.

A survey was conducted among otolaryngologists, thoracic surgeons, pediatric surgeons and pediatric radiologists to determine the frequency of removal of esophageal foreign bodies with a Foley catheter. The 245 physicians responding reported 1,512 cases, 96% of which were treated with this technique by radiologists and pediatric surgeons. Although no deaths or serious complications were reported, the author warns that increasing use of this procedure by nonendoscopists carries the risk of serious complications unless certain safeguards are taken. These include trained personnel, use of fluoroscopy, a cooperative patient with a single, smooth, radiopaque foreign body lodged in the esophagus and a barium esophagogram with negative results for total obstruction and underlying esophageal disease.

This study was undertaken in order to establish the incidence of aerodigestive tract foreign body accidents among older children and adolescents, and to investigate the circumstances surrounding these events. A review of patients treated over a 5-year period identified 367 children from whom aerodigestive tract foreign bodies were removed. Seventeen percent of these patients were 5 years of age or older. Among these children, 88% aspirated nonfood items, half of which were school supplies; 78% of the group 5 years old and under aspirated food items. Among older children with esophageal foreign bodies, 31 % had food impactions, compared with 7% in the younger group; 70% of these children had a history of some anatomic abnormality of the esophagus. These data suggest that older children and adolescents represent a distinct group of patients at risk for foreign body accidents. Pediatricians and parents of children in this age group should discourage the practice of using the oral cavity as a repository for school supplies, and should stress the need for adequate preparation and mastication of food, particularly among children with esophageal abnormalities.

Abstract Background Surgical correction of the webbed penis is challenging. We presented the safety and feasibility of webbed penis correction for neonates under local anesthesia using a simple principle of leaving equal cylindrical shaft skin. Methods This retrospective study included 530 patients who presented for circumcision to three pediatric surgery centers between May 2017 and January 2020. We included male patients aged less than four weeks old who had circumcision with a minimum of 6 months follow-up. We compared patients with normal penile anatomy (n = 451, Group 1) to a simple webbed penis (n = 79, Group 2). Results There were no differences in age and weight between groups. The procedure time was significantly longer in Group 2 (8.05 ± 3.11 vs. 7.48 ± 2.07 min; P = 0.04). There were no differences in bleeding (P = 0.38), redundant foreskin (P > 0.99), need for corrective surgery (P = 0.38), and re-suturing (P = 0.28) between groups. The procedure success was significantly higher in Group 1 (449 (99.56%) vs. 70 (88.6%); P < 0.001). Parents' satisfaction was measured at two weeks with no difference between both groups. Conclusion Simple penoscrotal web is not a contraindication for neonatal circumcision. Circumcision of the penoscrotal web had good esthetic results with comparable outcomes to those with a normal penis without a web.

Abstract: AV Block conduction is an abnormality in which the impulse from the atrium has a delayed conduction or no conduction at all to the ventricle. This abnormality is classified as AV Block first degree, second degree, and third degree, depending on the severity of the abnormality. This was a descriptive retrospective study using second data as the reference. This study was aimed to obtain the prevalence of atrioventricular block at Cardiology Clinic Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou Hospital Manado during 2013 – 2014. The results showed that of 40 patients, the highest percentage of cases had third degree AV block (21 patients; 53%), age group of 70-79 years (33%). Based on gender, there was the same number of cases of males and females, but the classification based on the degree of AV block showed that there were more male patients diagnosed as AV block first degree while there were more female patients diagnosed as third degree AV block. Hypertension was commonly found in the patients diagnosed as AV block as many as 18 patients (27%). Based on the chief complaint, most had difficulty of breathing (28%). However, each degree of the AV block had varied chief complaints and different kind of therapy. Based on the management, 77% of the patients had medical therapy with different kinds of medication.
