To investigate the frequency of Compositae sensitivity is one of the most important goals of current dermatology and allergology. We have patch tested 30 adult patients suffering from ?extrinsic? atopic dermatitis with sesquiterpene lactone mix and Compositae mix including Compositae mix individual ingredients, extracts of arnica (Arnica montana), chamomile (Chamomilla recutita), tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium) as well as with specific series for patients with atopic dermatitis. All allergens were purchased from Hermal-Trolab (Reinbek, Germany). There were 6 (20%) patients positive to Compositae mix only, and 3 (10%) patients positive to both Compositae mix and sesquiterpene lactone mix. Among 9 Compositae mix-sensitive patients 8 (88.8%) were positive to at least 1 of its individual ingredients: 5 (55.5%) to chamomile, 4 (44.4%) to arnica, 2 (22.2%) to tansy, and 2 (22.2%) to feverfew. Among Compositae-sensitive patients 78.8% had other contact allergies, most often to nickel (33.3%). Since our study represents the first report on contact allergy to Compositae among patients with "extrinsic" type of atopic dermatitis, it substantiates the statement that atopy represents a risk factor for Compositae allergy. In conclusion, the overall prevalence of 30% Compositae-sensitive among patients with ?extrinsic? atopic dermatitis detected in our study represents a basal sesquiterpene lactone mix detection rate of 10%, reinforced and safely supplemented by 20% by testing with the Compositae mix.

The etiopathogenesis of the nummular eczema is not fully known. Various causative factors have been proposed, and among these only a few studies investigate the relevance of contact allergy. Here, we present a case of nummular contact eczema in an 8-year-old allergic to perfumes. Since atopic dermatitis may also present with different clinical phenotypes, among which nummular eczema is quite frequent, the possible significant differences between non-atopic and atopic nummular diseases are considered. Based on the high incidence of contact sensitization in all cases of nummular eczema, it is recommended to perform patch tests for diagnostic-preventive purposes.

Aim. To assess the rate of sensitization to the grades of apples of various colours and analyze the association of the obtained indices and total sIgE levels of these grades with the severity of atopic dermatitis. Materials and methods. The blood sera of 215 patients, suffering from alimentary allergy, were studied. The detection rate of sensitization and that of specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) concentration sum to allergens of apple grades with various coating colours as well as the association of these indices with the degree of severity of atopic dermatitis (AD) was analyzed. Test-systems were used for immune-enzyme analysis of production. Statistical analysis of the obtained results was performed using the program “MedStat” (Donetsk). Results. It was shown that the detection rate of sensitization to the grades with mixed red colour is reliably higher (p < 0.001) compared to the grades without coating colour. The degree of AD severity correlates with the total quantity of apple grades, to which sensitization has been revealed (p < 0.01), with the quantity of grades with mixed red colour, to which sensitization has been found (p < 0.01) and with sIgE sum to the grades with mixed red colour (p < 0.01). Reliable differences (p = 0.006) in the degree of severity of atopic dermatitis among persons, sensitized to apple grades and with no sensitization to this fruit were established. Conclusions.The obtained data are to be used when choosing a diet and correcting it for persons with alimentary allergy and atopic dermatitis.

Achillea millefolium L. (AM) is an aromatic herb with a variety of pharmacological properties, such as anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic activities. However, AM’s effects on atopic dermatitis (AD) have not been investigated. This study evaluates the anti-AD activity of 50% ethanol-extracted AM in murine macrophage Raw 264.7 cells, in tumor necrosis factor-alpha/interferon-gamma (TNF-[Formula: see text]/IFN-[Formula: see text])-stimulated human immortal keratinocyte HaCaT cells in vitro, and in Biostir-AD-treated NC/Nga mice in vivo. The results showed that AM significantly downregulated expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as INOS, COX-2, and interleukin (IL)-6 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated Raw 264.7 cells. The mRNA expressions of INOS, COX-2, and IL-6 decreased by 76.1%, 69.3%, and 31.8%, respectively. Overexpression of chemokines, such as activation-regulated chemokine and macrophage-derived chemokine, regulated on activation of normal T-cell expressed and secreted, and IL-8 was inhibited by 70.01%, 52.91%, 73.53%, and 18.93%, respectively, in TNF-[Formula: see text]/IFN-[Formula: see text]-stimulated HaCaT cells by downregulating the mitogen-activated protein kinase, I[Formula: see text]B[Formula: see text], and the signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 signaling pathways. AD-like symptoms, such as elevated serum immunoglobin E levels, epidermal thickening, high dermatitis severity score, transepidermal water loss, and reduced skin hydration, were relieved by the dietary administration of AM in Biostir-AD-treated NC/Nga mice. In addition, filaggrin expression increased significantly in AM-treated groups. These results suggest that AM could be a useful candidate for AD treatment.
