Calcium carbonate, obtained as a waste in the industrial manufacture of magnesium carbonate and magnesium oxide from dolomites, can be applied in agriculture. The appreciable amounts of calcium and magnesium in this waste, together with impurities such as iron, zinc, manganese, chromium and copper compounds can be useful in soil amendment and plant nutrition. This paper presents preliminary results of the testing of several waste doses on soil, pursuing their effect on the uptake of cations by green oat (Avena sativa L.). The obtained results show an increase in the amount of calcium, magnesium, zinc and copper found in green oat plants, as well as a decrease of the content of iron and manganese with increasing waste dose. These results may be explained by lower absorptions of iron and manganese because of the antagonistic effect created by high amounts of calcium and magnesium, as well as by the presence of copper and zinc. .

The present study was carried out to evaluate the variations in serum minerals ( viz. calcium, magnesium and phosphorus) and transaminases in ketotic buffaloes. Results of blood analysis revealed a significant (P<0.05) reduction in serum phosphorus in ketotic buffaloes whereas nonsignificant (P>0.05) difference occur in serum calcium and magnesium in ketotic buffaloes as compared to control. At the same time significant increase in transaminases GPT, GOT and GGT have been observed .

Abstract Background Calcium carbonate antacids are potent over-the-counter antacids, made more effective by adding magnesium carbonate (as in Rennie, Bayer). However, published studies on their onset of action are scarce. Therefore, we carried out an in vitro study comparing Rennie and placebo under simulated conditions of the human stomach (artificial stomach model) to reconfirm the onset of action of Rennie. Methods The validated Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem apparatus (SHIME, ProDigest, Belgium) was used, comprising five reactors simulating different parts of the human gastrointestinal tract. Both Rennie and placebo were dosed at two tablets per incubation over six independent, 2-h stomach incubations each. Primary objectives: to evaluate the time required to achieve pH 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5, as well as the maximum pH reached. Secondary objective: to evaluate pepsin activity over the entire 2-h gastric incubation. Results After addition of Rennie, the gastric medium reached a pH of 3.0 within 40 s. The maximum pH of 5.24 was maintained for almost 10 min. In contrast, the maximum pH with placebo was 1.28 during the entire gastric simulation. Furthermore, Rennie strongly reduced the activity of mucosa-damaging pepsin during the period of increased pH. With placebo, the lower pH resulted in consistently high loads of digested peptides, reflecting the high cumulative and instantaneous pepsin activity. Conclusions New data is a critical component in informed decision making. Our data confirm the high efficacy and fast onset of acid-neutralizing action of Rennie, which begins to work within seconds.

Determinations of the Ca, Mg, Na, K, P and Cl content were made and the ratios of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus oxides suggest the presence of calcium and magnesium metaphosphates in the ash of the flesh, calcium metaphosphate in that from the skin and tribasic calcium orthophosphate in that from the bone.

The composition of breast milk from brazilian mothers delivering low birthweight infants and its adequacy as a source of nutrients for this group has not yet been fully elucidated. A total of 209 milk samples from 66 women were analysed. The mothers were divided into three groups: G1, mothers delivering term babies of low birthweight (TSGA, n=16); G2, mothers delivering preterm babies of appropriate birthweight (PTAGA, n=20); G3, mothers delivering term babies of appropriate birthweight (TAGA, n=30). The following factors were analysed: osmolarity, total proteins and protein fractions, creamatocrit, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Milk samples were collected 48 h and 7, 15, 30 and 60 days after delivery. The groups did not differ significantly in terms of osmolarity, total proteins and fractions, creamatocrit, calcium, magnesium or potassium throughout the study period. Sodium levels were higher in all samples from mothers of TSGA infants and in samples from mothers of PTAGA infants on the 7th, 15th and 30th days than in milk from the TAGA group. The authors consider the needs of the low birthweight and TAGA infants and that these high sodium levels may be necessary for growth of low birthweight infants.

Leakage of calcium, magnesium and potassium from discs of cortical apple fruit tissue was followed through fruit development and ripening. Leakage of potassium always exceeded that of calcium and magnesium and was little affected by the external presence of the divalent ions. Calcium and magnesium leakage was markedly increased by the external presence of either ion. In tissue from both freshly picked fruit and that taken from storage, potassium and magnesium leakage increased when the fruit was in an advanced state of senescence, but calcium leakage decreased. During fruit development, leakage of all cations was closely related to availability as expressed in tissue concentration. There was a marked increase in potassium leakage in association with the respiratory climacteric.

The objective of this work was to assess the relationship between macrofauna, mineralogy and exchangeable calcium and magnesium in Cerrado Oxisols under pasture. Twelve collection points were chosen in the Distrito Federal and in Formosa municipality, Goiás state, Brazil, representing four soil groups with varied levels of calcium + magnesium and kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite) ratios. Soil macrofauna was collected in triplicate at each collection point, and identified at the level of taxonomic groups. Macrofauna density showed correlation with contents of kaolinite, gibbsite and exchangeable Ca + Mg in the soils. Mineralogy and exchangeable Ca + Mg had significant effects on taxonomic groups and relative density of soil macrofauna. The termites (Isoptera) were more abundant in soils with low exchangeable Ca + Mg; earthworms (Oligochaeta), in soils with high levels of kaolinite; and Hemiptera and Coleoptera larvae were more abundant in gibbsitic soils with higher contents of total carbon.

The accumulation of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus was measured during an 8-week period in the early life stages of the air-breathing armoured catfish Megalechis personata acclimated to low-mineral fresh water (0.073 mmol l-1 calcium, 0.015 mmol l-1 magnesium, &lt;0.001 mmol l-1 phosphate) and high-mineral fresh water (0.59 mmol l-1 calcium, 1.94 mmol l-1 magnesium, &lt;0.001 mmol l-1 phosphate). The fish accumulated calcium twice as fast and phosphorus 1.5 times as fast in low-mineral fresh water (LMF) as in high-mineral fresh water (HMF), while the rate of accumulation of magnesium did not differ in LMF and HMF. The difference in the rates of accumulation of calcium and phosphorus between LMF and HMF was independent of the growth performance (food intake) in LMF and HMF. The mineral content of young M. personata from natural swamps and rainforest creeks in Suriname followed the LMF accumulation curves. The transition from aquatic respiration to bimodal respiration in the third week after hatching did not affect rates of mineral accumulation. The high rates of accumulation of calcium and magnesium of M. personata in LMF of 654 and 58 micromol h-1 kg-1, respectively, exceed the rates of uptake of calcium and magnesium of teleosts reported in the literature. The high rates of mineral accumulation in the early life stages of M. personata reflect the exponential growth during the first 8 weeks after hatching and the requirements of the juveniles while building their dermal armour. M. personata is well-adapted to neotropical fresh waters with an extremely low mineral content. The accumulation of calcium and phosphorus is discussed in relation to the function of the bony armour of M. personata.

Objectives: The objectives of the study were to evaluate changes in 25(OH) Vitamin D levels and some biochemical parameters in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients compared with healthy controls and assess the correlation of 25-hydroxy Vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, and disease activity. Study the effects of anti-RA drugs on these biochemical parameters and also the role of supplements calcium and 25-OH Vitamin D in RA patients. Methods: This study conducted between 60 patients for RA and 20 healthy controls according to the American College of Rheumatology standards in 2010. In this study, 25-hydroxy Vitamin D was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and also some biochemical parameters were measured with a spectrophotometer (Humalyzer 2000). Results: Serum 25(OH) Vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, and albumin levels were significantly lower in RA patients compared with healthy controls. Serum alanine aminotransferase aspartate aminotransferase levels were significantly increased in RA patients compared with healthy controls. The correlation was non-significantly among 25-hydroxy Vitamin D and clinical disease activity index (CDAI), while the results showed significantly inverse correlation calcium and magnesium concentrations with CDAI. Conclusion: 25-OH Vitamin D, calcium, albumin, and magnesium deficiency appear to be widespread in patients with RA. Thus, biochemical changes in RA are reflected in the pathogenesis of RA. Furthermore, in these results, there is no relationship between Vitamin D and the disease activity, while there is a relationship between calcium and magnesium with disease activity.
