The leaching of lead from lead?zinc concentrates by iron(III) salt solutins in the absence, as well as in the presence of mineral acids (HCl, H2SO4 HNO3) has been investigated. It was shown that the leaching of lead by means of 0.3 M Fe(NO3)3 at (22 ? 1) ?C leads to practically complete recovery of lead during 1 h. This conclusion was confirmed by data obtained using chemical, thermographical and X-ray photographical methods. Atechnological scheme for the synthesis of lead salts and oxides without the production of metal lead has been developed as a result of the present investigation.

The mixed-metal mixed-halide complex [CuPbBrlL2]2 has been prepared by the direct interaction of zerovalent copper with lead halides and 2-dimethylaminoethanol (HL) in dmso and has been characterized by X-ray crystallography; the structure shows a layer arrangement of the tetranuclear metal units through the μ3-halogen bridging.

This study analyzed the effects of sulphuric acid (H2SO4) treatment on pysico-chemical properties and morphological changes of clay obtained from Sg. Sayong, Perak. The clay was ground and sieved to <150μm and treated with different concentrations of H2SO4. The treatment was completed by refluxing the clay with different concentration of H2SO4 (1M, 5M and 10M ) at 100 °C for 4 hours and followed by calcination at 500 °C for 1 hour. The physic-chemical properties and morphological changes of the untreated and treated clay were compared using Surface Area Analyser, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Micrograph (FESEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that acid treatment of 5M increased the surface area from 25 m2/g to 75 m2/g and the pore volume increased from 0.1518 cc/g to 0.3546 cc/g. The nanopore size of the clay decreased from 24.8 nm to 19.4 nm after treated with acid. This can be explained due to the elimination of the exchangeable cations and generation of microporosity. The results of XRF showed SiO2 increased from 58.34% to 74.52% and Al2O3 reduced from 34.6% to 18.31%. The mineral oxides such as Fe2O3, MgO, CaO, K2O and TiO2 also reduced. This concluded that H2SO4 treatment has led to significant removal of octahedral Al3+, Fe3+ cations and other impurities. In conclusion, this study showed the physico-chemical properties and morphology of Sayong clay were improved once treated with H2SO4 and therefore suggests better supporting material for enzyme immobilization.

Radiation and photodynamic therapies are used for cancer treatment by targeting DNA. However, efficiency is limited due to physico-chemical processes and the insensitivity of native nucleobases to damage. Thus, incorporation of radio- and photosensitizers into these therapies should increase both efficacy and the yield of DNA damage. To date, studies of sensitization processes have been performed on simple model systems, e.g., buffered solutions of dsDNA or sensitizers alone. To fully understand the sensitization processes and to be able to develop new efficient sensitizers in the future, well established model systems are necessary. In the cell environment, DNA tightly interacts with proteins and incorporating this interaction is necessary to fully understand the DNA sensitization process. In this work, we used dsDNA/protein complexes labeled with photo- and radiosensitizers and investigated degradation pathways using LC-MS and HPLC after X-ray or UV radiation.

JEH Roberts was a leading figure in the new specialty of thoracic surgery before Second World War. His interest in this branch of surgery began during First World War when he served as a Major in a casualty clearing station and operated under local anaesthesia and without X-ray facilities. He reported a series of 199 cases of severe chest injury in which operation had been carried out in 67 patients – of whom 34 had made a complete recovery, a remarkable achievement in 1917. He was the first to use negative pressure suction drainage of the chest to encourage full expansion of the lung after thoracotomy, and he developed a plastic operation on the chest wall to treat chronic empyema. Together with HP Nelson, he described one-stage lobectomy for lung resection and developed a new lung tourniquet for use during this operation.

The study presents 175 artefacts from the settlement center in Gniezno – beads and rings. The materials come from settlement levels from around the mid-10th to the 13th centuries. The latest chronological findings based on 14C dating have made it possible to refine the dating, especially of the early settlement levels of the stronghold, where the vast majority of glass artefacts come from. Threeba sic groups of beads have been distinguished based on the technique of their production – beads made of a drawing a tube, the technique of winding a glass strip, as well as casting and sintering. The results of 7 physico-chemical analyzes of the glass composition (performed with the X-Ray Fluorescence, XRF method) are presented. Physicochemical analyzes of the chemical composition of the tested beads made it possible to determine the technological group and the type of glass. An attempt was made to explain the origin of the starting material (glass) for jewelery. A comparative analysis made it possible to indicate in a general manner possible manufacturers and to outline the likely directions of the influx of these glass ornaments to Gniezno.
