Based on the critical review of all the available experimental data in the literature, 8 key alloys were prepared by arc melting to investigate the phase equilibria in the Zr-Y system, These alloys, which were annealed at 5 different temperatures (800?C, 1000?C, 1100?C, 1120?C, 1160?C), were analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results showed that a peritectoid reaction (?Zr) + (?Y) = (?Zr) occurs at 886?C ? 5?C, and an eutectic reaction L = (?Zr) + (?Y) occurs at 1313?C ? 5?C. Taking into account the experimental data obtained both from this work and the literature, the Zr-Y system was thermodynamically modeled. The previously reported temperature for the peritectic reaction of (?Y) + L = (?Y) at about 1490 ?C is supported by our thermodynamic calculation. Comparison between the calculated and measured phase diagrams shows that the thermodynamic calculation can well account for the experimental data.

Ti-based alloys present unique properties and hence, are employed in several industrial segments. Among Ti alloys, β type alloys form one of the most versatile classes of materials in relation to processing, microstructure and mechanical properties. It is well known that heat treatment of Ti alloys plays an important role in determining their microstructure and mechanical behavior. The aim of this work is to analyze microstructure and phases formed during cooling of β Ti-Nb-Sn alloy through different cooling rates. Initially, samples of Ti-Nb-Sn system were prepared through arc melting furnace. After, they were subjected to continuous cooling experiments to evaluate conditions for obtaining metastable phases. Microstructure analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction were performed in order to evaluate phase transformations. Depending on the cooling rate and composition, α” martensite, ω phase and β phase were obtained. Elastic modulus has been found to decrease as the amount of Sn was increased.

The higher mechanical strength of Al87Ce3Ni8.5Mn1.5 nanophase amorphous composites has been obtained with two methods. The first nanophase amorphous composites are directly produced by the single roller spin quenching technology. The method taken for the second nanophase amorphous composites is at first to obtain amorphous single-phase alloy, followed by annealed at different temperatures .The formative condition, the microstructure, the particle size, the volume fraction of α-Al phase and microhardness of nanophase amorphous composites etc have been investigated and compared by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The microstructure of composites produced by the second method is higher than the former, the fabricated material structure of the system is more uniform and the process is easier to control.

Abstract Synthesis of thermochromic VO2 (M) was successfully done by annealing hydrothermally-prepared VO2 (B) at different temperatures and times. Conversion of the metastable VO2 (B) to the thermochromic VO2 polymorph was studied using thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) under N2 atmosphere. Moreover, the phase and morphology of the synthesized samples were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), respectively. Accordingly, the XRD scans of all the annealed samples exhibited the presence of monoclinic VO2 (M), while the FE-SEM images of the samples showed the formation of nanorods and nanospheres, particularly those heated at high temperatures (650 °C and 700 °C). Meanwhile, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to measure the phase transition temperature (τc), hysteresis, and enthalpy of the prepared VO2. Based on these results, all samples displayed a τc of about 66 °C. However, the hysteresis was high for the samples annealed at lower temperatures (550 °C and 600 °C), while the enthalpy was very low for samples heated at lower annealing time (1.5 h and 1 h). These findings showed that crystallinity and nanostructure formation affected the thermochromic properties of the samples. In particular, the sample annealed at 650 °C showed better crystallinity and improved thermochromic behavior.

Estimating the solubility and solution thermodynamics parameters of aliskiren hemifumarate (AHF) in three different room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), Transcutol-HP (THP) and water are interesting as there is no solubility data available in the literature. In the current study, the solubility and solution thermodynamics of AHF in three different RTILs, THP and water at the temperature range from 298.2 to 318.2 K under air pressure 0.1 MP were evaluated. The solid phase evaluation by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD) indicated no conversion of AHF into polymorph. The mole fraction solubility of AHF was found to be highest in 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (HMMHFP) ionic liquid (7.46 × 10−2) at 318.2 K. The obtained solubility values of AHF was regressed by the Apelblat and van’t Hoff models with overall root mean square deviations (RMSD) of 0.62% and 1.42%, respectively. The ideal solubility of AHF was higher compared to experimental solubility values at different temperatures. The lowest activity coefficient was found in HMMHFP, which confirmed highest molecular interaction between AHF–HMMHFP. The estimated thermodynamic parameters confirmed endothermic and entropy driven dissolution of AHF in different RTILs, THP, and water.

A pseudoboehmite was obtained by sol-gel synthesis using aluminum nitrate as precursor. It was used a 2n full factorial design for studying the effect of the temperature of synthesis, the concentration of ammonium hydroxide, and the radiation dose in the product of sol-gel synthesis. The product of the synthesis was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction of the product (after firing the pseudoboehmite at different temperatures), and it was also analyzed the temperature of endothermic and exothermic transformations using the thermo gravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The X-ray diffraction data show that α-alumina was obtained at 1100o C.

The devitrification of the Fe-Ni-B-Si amorphous ribbon was investigated by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with scanning and isothermal methods. The devitrification of rapidly quenched ribbons is a multilevel process. On the basis of DSC investigations it was determined that crystallization occurs in three processes up to 700°C in the Fe40Ni40B16Si4 alloy. In the present work the first and second steps have been discussed. The first crystallization step involves the segregation of the Fe-Ni crystalline solid solution from the amorphous matrix. During the second crystallization phase, in addition to austenite, nickel silicide and two types of iron borides crystallize as well. The ribbons were relaxed at 380°C for 2 hours, following the pre-annealing at different temperatures. Pre-annealing was performed in the DSC within the temperature range elapsing from 395°C to 420°C. The preannealing at temperatures below the first exothermal DSC peak has an effect on the crystallization processes. After the pre-annealing the samples were investigated by DSC. The DSC peak of the first crystallization step shifts to higher temperatures and decrease its enthalpy. The scanning DSC measurements, applied after the isothermal pre-annealing, were performed in order to determine the fraction of the ribbon transformed in the primary crystallization step. The second DSC peak shifts to lower temperatures with a maximum of 4°C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses reveal that the lattice constant changes with the pre-annealing temperatures. Such observation was also supported by the circumstance that the composition of the Fe-Ni solid solution undergoes certain modifications.

13 ternary Cu-Mg-Si alloys were prepared by means of the powder metallurgy method. Phase equilibria at 500 and 700 oC of the Cu-Mg-Si system were determined using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The existence of 3 ternary compounds in this system was verified: CuMgSi_Sigma (Cu16Mg6Si7), Tau (Cu3Mg2Si), and Laves ((Cu0.8Si0.2)2(Mg0.88Cu0.12)). A thermodynamic modeling for the Cu-Mg-Si system was then conducted on the basis of the experimental data obtained in this work and those critically reviewed from the literature. The complex phase relationship between Laves phase and other phases has been successfully modeled in this work. Comparisons between the calculated and the measured phase diagrams show that most of the experimental data can be reproduced by the presently obtained thermodynamic parameters.

Al2(WO4)3was synthesized by co-precipitation using Na2WO4and Al (NO3)3as precursors. After drying the precipitate, it was calcined at different temperatures between 500°C and 800°C. The crystallization and degradation temperatures of the samples were evaluated by means of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetry (TG) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). It was observed that the crystallization starts at around 600°C, however Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis showed that at this temperature the sample is partially amorphous. The degradation of the material starts at around 1200°C and at 1400°C the tungsten oxide has almost completely evaporated and the material is transformed mainly in alpha-alumina.

Bulk Nd60-xCo15+xAl25 (where x =0, 2, 5, 8, 11) sheet alloys were prepared by argon arc melting and suction casting a copper mold. Glassing forming ability (GFA) of these alloys was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Due to the dissimilarity reflected from DSC curves the thermodynamic calculation was applied. The values of Gibbs free energy (∆Gl-x (Tg)) for the amorphous alloys were gave out and some GFA criterions were adopted to make a comparison among the samples.

Ni – W alloy coatings are electrodeposited with direct and pulse current using gluconate bath at pH5. Effects of direct current (DC) and pulse current (PC) on structural characteristics of the coatings have been investigated by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). EDXS shows that W contents are 13.3 and 12.6 at.% in DC and PC (10:40) Ni – W coatings, respectively. FESEM analysis exhibits the homogeneous coarse nodular morphology in DC plated deposits. DSC studies reveal that Ni – W coatings are thermally stable up to 400°C. XPS studies demonstrate that DC plated coating has significant amount of Ni and W in elemental form along with their respective oxidized species. In contrast, mainly oxidized metals are present in the as-deposited coatings prepared with PC plating. The microhardness of pulse current (100:400) deposited Ni – W coating is about 750 HK that is much higher than DC plated coating (635 HK). Heat treatment of the deposits carried out at different temperatures show a significant increase in microhardness which can be comparable with hard chromium coatings.
