This study aimed to provide information on the extraction yields, total phenols, total flavonoids, antioxidant activity, and qualitative-quantitative chemical composition of the extracts obtained from the dried fruit of Sambucus racemosa L. with conventional solvents (methanol, acetone, chloroform) and deep eutectic solvents (choline chloride urea and choline chloride glycerol). Solid-liquid extraction, Folin- Ciocalteu method, DPPH free radical scavenging, HPLC-UV/VIS were the methods used in this study. The highest extraction yield (18%) was obtained with ChCl:G as an extragent. The highest amount of total flavonoids was the content of this extract (12.3 mg QE/g d.e.). Extracts obtained with acetone and ChCl:U possess the highest amount of total phenol content (125.26 and 104.38 mg GAE/g d.e. respectively). All tested extracts showed free radical scavenging activity. Identified components of extracts are gallic acid, rutin, caftaric acid, caffeic acid, hyperoside, vitexin, and quercetin. Fruit extracts of S. racemosa are a rich source of phenols and flavonoids. The extracts obtained with DESs are more active in free radical scavenging than those obtained with conventional solvents, and possess qualitatively and quantitatively more components, apart from vitexin that was detected only in the methanol extract.

Abstract Cordia myxa is one of the important underutilized fruit plants suitable for arid and semi-arid regions of India having potential for commercial exploitation in vegetable and pickle industry. Fruits of four improved genotypes of Cordia myxa were analyzed for nutritional value, total phenol content and free radical scavenging activity. Acetone extracts from dried fruit samples were prepared to determine total phenol content and free radical scavenging activity using DPPH essay. The fruits harvested at 20 or 30 days after fruit set recorded higher crude fibre and crude protein as compared to at full ripening stage. The total phenol content was found highest in fruits harvested earliest irrespective of genotypes. The correlation coefficient between total phenol content and free radical scavenging activity of fruit extract was found positive and significant. The results suggest that the fruits of Cordia myxa should be harvested at 20 to 30 days after fruit set to get maximum benefits of its anti-oxidant and other nutritional properties.

The aim of this study was to determine neuroprotective, antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic potential of acetone extracts of Coprinus comatus and Coprinopsis picacea mushrooms. The neuroprotetive activity was tested against acetylcholinesterase enzyme using the Ellman method. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by free radical scavenging ability, superoxide anion radical scavenging activity and reducing power. The total phenol content was examined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The antimicrobial potential was determined by a microdilution method against 12 microorganisms. The cytotoxic activity was tested using MTT method on the Hela, A549 and LS174 cells. Our results indicate that C. comatus expressed a stronger neuroprotective effect (the percentage of inhibition of acetylcholinesterase was within the range 19.66-51.73%) than C. picacea. In antioxidant effect C. comatus had more potent free radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 276.69 μg/mL) and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 39.40 μg/mL), while reducing power was relatively similar for both species. The total amount of phenols for C. comatus and C. picacea was 50.57 and 50.20 μg PE/mg of dry extracts, respectively. In antimicrobial activity, C. picacea showed a better effect with MIC values from 0.1 to 7.5 mg/mL. Finally, C. picacea expressed stronger cytotoxicity toward A549 and LS174 cells, while C. comatus was more active against Hela cell.

Eight plants of Lamiaceae under subfamily Nepetoideae found in Manipur, India were selected for estimation of their polyphenolic compounds and free radical scavenging activity which is expressed on dry weight basis. In this present study, the total phenol and flavonoid contents as well as the free radical scavenging activity were studied using spectrophotometric method. The total phenol content was determined based on Folin-Ciocalteau reagent, flavonoid was determined by aluminium chloride spectrophotometric method and tannin by Folin Dennis Method. The free radical scavenging activity was determined by using DPPH radical which is expressed as IC50 (μg/ml). The total phenolic content varied from 21.39±0.927 to 46.28±0.543 mg/g, flavonoids content in the selected samples varied from 13.30±0.684 to 26.03±0.217 mg/g and tannin content varied from 8.72±0.160 to 17.04±0.206 mg/g. The free radical scavenging activity among the selected samples varied from 11.67±0.221 to 38.29±0.532 μg/ml. The correlation between the free radical scavenging activity with total phenol content (R2=0.511), with flavonoids (R2=0.241) and with tannin (R2=0.690) was calculated and maximum correlation value was found between tannin content and the free radical scavenging activity of the plant samples. The result supports that tannins were more responsible for free radical scavenging activity in the presently selected plants.
