Let G = (V,E) be a simple connected graph. Denote by D(G) the diagonal matrix of its vertex degrees and by A(G) its adjacency matrix. Then the Laplacian matrix of graph G is L(G) = D(G)-A(G). Let a(G) and ?(G), respectively, be the second smallest Laplacian eigenvalue and the independence number of graph G. In this paper, we characterize the extremal graph with second minimum value for addition of algebraic connectivity and independence number among all connected graphs with n ? 6 vertices (Actually, we can determine the p-th minimum value of a(G)+ ?(G) under certain condition when p is small). Moreover, we present a lower bound to the addition of algebraic connectivity and radius of connected graphs.

Abstract The second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of a graph (network) is called its algebraic connectivity which is used to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease, distinguish the group differences, measure the robustness, construct multiplex model, synchronize the stability, analyze the diffusion processes and find the connectivity of the graphs (networks). A connected graph containing two or three cycles is called a bicyclic graph if its number of edges is equal to its number of vertices plus one. In this paper, firstly the unique graph with a minimum algebraic connectivity is characterized in the class of connected graphs whose complements are bicyclic with exactly three cycles. Then, we find the unique graph of minimum algebraic connectivity in the class of connected graphs $\begin{array}{} {\it\Omega}^c_{n}={\it\Omega}^c_{1,n}\cup{\it\Omega}^c_{2,n}, \end{array}$ where $\begin{array}{} {\it\Omega}^c_{1,n} \end{array}$ and $\begin{array}{} {\it\Omega}^c_{2,n} \end{array}$ are classes of the connected graphs in which the complement of each graph of order n is a bicyclic graph with exactly two and three cycles, respectively.

The independence number of a graph [Formula: see text], denoted by [Formula: see text], is the maximum cardinality of an independent set of vertices in [Formula: see text]. [Henning and Löwenstein An improved lower bound on the independence number of a graph, Discrete Applied Mathematics  179 (2014) 120–128.] proved that if a connected graph [Formula: see text] of order [Formula: see text] and size [Formula: see text] does not belong to a specific family of graphs, then [Formula: see text]. In this paper, we strengthen the above bound for connected graphs with maximum degree at least three that have a non-cut-vertex of maximum degree. We show that if a connected graph [Formula: see text] of order [Formula: see text] and size [Formula: see text] has a non-cut-vertex of maximum degree then [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is the maximum degree of the vertices of [Formula: see text]. We also characterize all connected graphs [Formula: see text] of order [Formula: see text] and size [Formula: see text] that have a non-cut-vertex of maximum degree and [Formula: see text].

The spectrum of the Laplacian matrix of a network plays a key role in a wide range of dynamical problems associated with the network, from transient stability analysis of power network to distributed control of formations. LetG=(V,E)be a simple connected graph onnvertices and letμ(G)be the largest Laplacian eigenvalue (i.e., the spectral radius) ofG. In this paper, by using the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, we show that the upper bounds for the Laplacian spectral radius ofG.

Let G be a graph on n vertices. The Laplacian matrix of G, denoted by L(G), is defined as L(G) = D(G) −A(G), where A(G) is the adjacency matrix of G and D(G) is the diagonal matrix of the vertex degrees of G. A graph G is said to be L-integral if all eigenvalues of the matrix L(G) are integers. In this paper, we characterize all Lintegral non-bipartite graphs among all connected graphs with at most two vertices of degree larger than or equal to three.

The variation of Randic index R'(G) of a graph G is defined by R'(G) = ?uv 1/ max{du,dv}, where du is the degree of a vertex u in G and the summation extends over all edges uv of G. In this work, we characterize the extremal trees achieving the minimum value of R0 for trees with given number of vertices and leaves. Furthermore, we characterize the extremal graphs achieving the minimum value of R' for connected graphs with given number of vertices and girth.

The algebraic connectivity of a graph $G$ is the second smallest eigenvalue of its Laplacian matrix. Let $\mathscr{B}_n$ be the set of all bicyclic graphs of order $n$. In this paper, we determine the last four bicyclic graphs (according to their smallest algebraic connectivities) among all graphs in $\mathscr{B}_n$ when $n\geq 13$. This result, together with our previous results on trees and unicyclic graphs, can be used to further determine the last sixteen graphs among all connected graphs of order $n$. This extends the results of Shao et al. [The ordering of trees and connected graphs by their algebraic connectivity, Linear Algebra Appl. 428 (2008) 1421-1438].

Abstract For a simple connected graph G of order n having distance signless Laplacian eigenvalues ρ 1 Q ≥ ρ 2 Q ≥ ⋯ ≥ ρ n Q \rho _1^Q \ge \rho _2^Q \ge \cdots \ge \rho _n^Q , the distance signless Laplacian energy DSLE(G) is defined as D S L E ( G ) = ∑ i = 1 n | ρ i Q - 2 W ( G ) n | DSLE\left( G \right) = \sum\nolimits_{i = 1}^n {\left| {\rho _i^Q - {{2W\left( G \right)} \over n}} \right|} where W(G) is the Weiner index of G. We show that the complete split graph has the minimum distance signless Laplacian energy among all connected graphs with given independence number. Further, we prove that the graph Kk ∨ ( Kt∪ Kn−k−t), 1 ≤ t ≤ ⌊ n - k 2 ⌋ 1 \le t \le \left\lfloor {{{n - k} \over 2}} \right\rfloor has the minimum distance signless Laplacian energy among all connected graphs with vertex connectivity k.

Given a simple connected graph G, let D ( G ) be the distance matrix, D L ( G ) be the distance Laplacian matrix, D Q ( G ) be the distance signless Laplacian matrix, and T r ( G ) be the vertex transmission diagonal matrix of G. We introduce the generalized distance matrix D α ( G ) = α T r ( G ) + ( 1 − α ) D ( G ) , where α ∈ [ 0 , 1 ] . Noting that D 0 ( G ) = D ( G ) , 2 D 1 2 ( G ) = D Q ( G ) , D 1 ( G ) = T r ( G ) and D α ( G ) − D β ( G ) = ( α − β ) D L ( G ) , we reveal that a generalized distance matrix ideally bridges the spectral theories of the three constituent matrices. In this paper, we obtain some sharp upper and lower bounds for the generalized distance energy of a graph G involving different graph invariants. As an application of our results, we will be able to improve some of the recently given bounds in the literature for distance energy and distance signless Laplacian energy of graphs. The extremal graphs of the corresponding bounds are also characterized.
