A New Species

Here we describe Centaurea hekimhanensis, a new species found in Hekimhan (Turkey, Malatya Province). This Centaurea grows on the stony-gravel mountain slopes of Yamada? and is morphologically similar to C. reuteriana, C. bourgaei, and C. pichleri in terms of their flowering lateral stem at the base of the rosette, but differs regarding the shape of the stem and rosette leaves, and the size of the rosette leaves and median appendages; the achene ornamentation is irregularly sulcate. The chromosome number of the new species is 2n = 20.

A New Species

Aspidistra revoluta (Asparagaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from limestone areas in southern Chongqing Municipality, China. The new species can be distinguished from the other Aspidistra species by its unique umbrella-like pistil with large revolute stigma lobes that bent downwards and touch the base of the perigone. A detailed morphological comparison among A. revoluta, A. nanchuanensis and A. carnosa is provided. The pollen grains of A. revoluta are subspherical and inaperturate, with verrucous exine. The chromosome number is 2n = 38, and the karyotype is formulated as 2n = 22m + 6sm + 10st. The average length of chromosome complement is 4.50 μm, and the karyotype asymmetry indexes A1 and A2 are respectively 0.37±0.03 and 0.49±0.01.

Acianthera sudae is newly described based on cultivated material from Brazil. It belongs to section Cryptophoranthae and differs from all others in this group by the larger flowers and sepals fused apically for more than half length, and a green-brown abaxial side of sepals with purple dots. Chromosome number (2n = 40) and genome size estimation (1C-value = 1.18 pg) is provided and its phylogenetic placement under the genus is supported with reconstruction of a molecular phylogeny using nuclear ribosomal ITS.

A New Species

We describe a new species of Gomesa (Oncidiinae, Orchidaceae), Gomesa caatingana, with restricted distribution on caatinga inselbergs in Paraíba and Pernambuco States, Brazil. Morphological and karyological characters of the new species were compared with those of Gomesa flexuosa, which is morphologically the most closely related species. Differences in geographical distribution, habit, flower morphology and chromosome number support description of this new species.

A New Species

Sinosenecio ovatifolius (Asteraceae, Senecioneae), a new species occurring in northeastern Guangxi, China, is illustrated and de-scribed with report on its floral micromorphological characters, achene surface feature and chromosome number. The new spe-cies is phylogenetically close to S. guangxiensis, S. jiangxiensis, S. jiuhuashanicus, S. latouchei, S. peltatus, S. saxatilis, and S. wuyiensis. Morphology and sequence divergence of the nrITS region indicate that S. ovatifolius is well differentiated from its close relatives. It most closely resembles S. guangxiensis and S. latouchei in the scapigerous habit, leaf texture and indumentum, but differs markedly in the ovate lamina, inconspicuously undulate-dentate margin and glabrous and smooth achene surface.

A New Species

Changnienia Chien (1935: 89) is a monotypic genus of tribe Calypsoeae endemic to eastern and central China (Chen et al. 1999, 2009, Freudenstein 2005), previously with only the species C. amoena Chien (1935: 90), which was listed in the Chinese Redbook in 1992 (Fu 1992). Yang & Zhu (1984) reported a chromosome number for it of 2n=46. Sun et al. (2006) observed pollination and found that Bombus trifasciatus was its pollinator. Zhai et al. (2013) confirmed the phylogenetic placement of this species as a member of tribe Calypsoeae (sensu Pridgeon et al. 2005). A new species of Changnienia is described and illustrated here based on molecular and morphological evidence. It is discovered in Malipo, Yunnan Province, China.

A New Species

Lessingianthus concepcionis, a new species from northern Paraguay is described and illustrated. The new species has a certain resemblance to L. niederleinii but can be easily separated by the combination of leaves with denticulate and revolute margins, tomentose beneath, involucre with 6–7 series of phyllaries, glandular trichomes on the corolla lobes, and the chromosome number 2n=8x=128.

The karyotypes of four Brazilian “eleutherodactyline” samples were analyzed aiming to provide additional cytogenetic data for future understanding of the evolutionary and systematic relationships of this large anuran group. The populations consisted of Pristimantis dundeei (Chapada dos Guimarães and Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso), Pristimantis aff. dundeei (Aripuanã, Mato Grosso) and Ischnocnema paulodutrai (Ilhéus, Bahia). The data revealed that P. dundeei and P. aff. dundeei have 2n=28 chromosomes, whereas I. paulodutrai has 2n=30. All pairs of chromosomes were telocentric, except for the subtelocentric pair 4 in I. paulodutrai. Differences in Ag-NOR pattern and interstitial heterochromatin positions clearly distinguished P. aff. dundeei from P. dundeei, and differentiated them from I. paulodutrai. The specimens of I. paulodutrai showed two distinct color patterns, but they did not differ in their cytogenetic characteristics. Karyotypes with 2n=28 and 2n=30 chromosomes have not been previously described for Brazilian “eleutherodactylines” which, to date, had been characterized as 2n=20, 2n=22 and 2n=34. The NOR position differences identified between P. dundeei and P. aff. dundeei, allied to their known distinct behavior and ecological data, suggested that the P. aff. dundeei from the Aripuanã sampling location is a new species. Similarities between I. paulodutrai and species currently assigned to Pristimantis are herein discussed on the basis of chromosome number and morphological characteristics.

A new species, Trigonella bakhtiarica, from the Iranian province Chahar Mahal Va Bakhtiari is described, illustrated and compared to its most closely related species, T. aphanoneura. Trigonella bakhtiarica has a longer corolla and differs in the shape, surface and size of its pods, which are taxonomically informative characters in Trigonella sect. Ellipticae. Chromosome counts and meiosis assays show that both species are diploid, and that their euploid plants possess a somatic chromosome number of 2n = 2x = 16, which is consistent with the predicted base number of x = 8.

AbstractJurinea turcica B.Doǧan & A.Duran sp. nova (Asteraceae) is described and illustrated from North-West Anatolia, Turkey. It is closely related to J. macrocalathia and also an endemic. Diagnostic morphological characters of J. turcica from closely similar taxa are discussed. The pollen characteristics and achene surface morphology of J. turcica and J. macrocalathia are examined by SEM. It is diploid with the chromosome number of 2n = 34.

A New Species

Centaurea sanandajensis is described and illustrated as a new species from Kurdestan Province, W Iran. The characters that distinguish the new species from its nearest relative C. longipedunculata are given. In addition, C. elegantissima is reported as new to Iran, and its chromosome number (2n = 2x = 22) is counted for the first time. The description of C. elegantissima is completed with the characters of mature achenes, and its differences from the nearest relative C. kandavanensis are summarized. The geographical distribution of discussed species is presented.
