For the purpose of genetic characterization of strains of sheep in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a morphometric characterization of Kupreska Pramenka has been performed. A total of 62 heads were measured, 56 ewes and 6 rams. The average height of the withers of ewes was 69.71 cm, the height of the hook was 70.57 cm, the body length was 72.57 cm, the chest width behind the shoulders was 21.12 cm, chest depth 31.98 cm, width of the hips was 20.28 cm, the chest volume was 90.95 cm and the circumference volume was 7.91 cm. The rams had an average height of 75.33 cm at the withers, the hook height of 76.33 cm, the body length 78.83 cm, the chest width behind the shoulders was 24.33 cm, chest depth 34.50 cm, width of the hips was 22.00 cm, chest volume was 98.50 cm and the circumference volume was 9.33 cm. In sheep and rams measures that have been shown the highest correlation and statistically highly significant difference were those related to the process of growth and development of the animal, and these are: the height of the withers and hook (r = 0.841 for ewes and r = 1.00 for rams), while the other hand, there are measures that do not show correlative relationship as hook height and chest volume (r = 0.155 for ewes and r = 0.533 for rams).

The strategy of conservation of endangered sheep populations implies morphological and genetic characterization, as basic preconditions for their conservation. The aim of this study was to determine the morphometric characteristics, their correlations and the index of physical development of Pirot pramenka, which has the status of the most endangered population in Serbia. The measuring was performed on 30 sheep, aged 3 years, reared in the area of Stara Planina. The descriptive statistical procedure was performed using the statistical package Statistica (version 8). The average height at the withers was 56.31 cm, body length 62.93 cm, chest width 18.37 cm, chest depth 25.96 cm, chest circumference 77.59 cm, shin circumference 6.70 cm. The strongest and significantly positive correlation (P <0.05) was found between chest depth and height at withers (0.65), body length (0.58) and body weight (0.56). Pirotska pramenka has slightly higher indices of format, chest and massiveness, in relation to breeds Vitoroga Zuja and Travnik Pramenka. These morphometric traits suggest that, compared to previous research, the body frame of Pirot pramenka sheep did not change significantly, which means that there were no crosses with other breeds due to geographical isolation and enthusiasm of breeders to preserve the indigenous Pirot pramenka which was the starting point for following authentic brands: Pirot lamb, cheese and carpet. Hence the biological and moral imperative: to preserve this highly endangered population.

Morphometric characterization of three strains: Dub, Privor and Kupres was done in order to obtain the genetic characterization of autochthonous sheep strains in Central Bosnia. Total of 205 ewes and rams was measured in order to determine similarities and differences between them. The eight, most important, morphometric trait were determined: wither height, rump height, body length, shoulder width, chest depth, hip width, chest perimeter and shin perimeter. Ewes of Dub Pramenka in relation to Privor and Kupres strains had pronounced morphometric measures, and established differences were statistically significant and highly significant. Statistically significant differences in all measures was observed between rams, expect for hip width. The obtained results show a significant difference in morphometric measures of three autochthonous Pramenka strains from Central Bosnia.

Summary The purpose of this study is to determine the morphometric characterization of Dubska Pramenka sheep and to establish a relationship between the most important body measurements of ewes and rams within the strain. The Dubska Pramenka is one of the biggest strains within the Pramenka breed. The wither heights of ewes and rams were 73.37 cm and 79.92 cm respectively, whereas the body lengths were 74.66 cm (ewes) and 80.42 cm (rams), and the rump heights were 73.72 cm (female) and 80.16 cm (male). Based on the data presented, it is evident that the Dubska Pramenka sheep has almost a square body shape with the rump height slightly greater than the wither height. The chest depth and shoulder width of ewes were 34.50 cm and 22.72 cm respectively, whereas those of males were 36.17 cm and 23.75 cm. In both sheep genders, the hip width (ewes 21.92 cm, rams 22.91 cm) was lower than the shoulder width. The chest and shin perimeters of females were 98.72 cm and 9.31 cm respectively, whereas those of males were 103.25 cm and 10.91 cm. The most significant correlation and statistical significance were recorded in relation to the measured wither and rump heights (r = 0.856 for females, r = 0.856 for males) due to their constant increase during the growth and development of sheep. Conversely, the measurements of rump heights and chest perimeters did not indicate any correlation (r = −0.028 for ewes, r = 0.004 for rams).

Abstract Background There are only limited number of reports on molecular epidemiology of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis in dogs and cats in China. This study was conducted to assess the infection rates, genetic identity, and public health potential of these parasites in dogs and cats in Guangdong, China. Methods PCR and sequence analyses were used to identify and genotype Cryptosporidium spp. and G. duodenalis in fecal samples from 641 dogs and 418 cats in Guangdong. Chi-square test and odds ratio analysis were used to compare the occurrence rates of these pathogens and identify risk factors for infection. Results The overall infection rates of Cryptosporidium spp. and G. duodenalis were 6.9% (44/641) and 9.4% (60/641) in dogs, and 6.2% (26/418) and 3.6% (15/418) in cats. Purebred cats (12.4%; χ2 = 5.110, OR = 2.8, P = 0.024) and dogs (10.8%; χ2 = 5.597, OR = 4.8, P = 0.018) were more likely to be infected by Cryptosporidium spp. and G. duodenalis, respectively. Dogs (12.0%; χ2 = 7.589, OR = 2.6, P = 0.006) and cats (13.6%; χ2 = 8.235, OR = 3.5, P = 0.004) under 6 months had significantly higher infection rates of Cryptosporidium spp. than older animals. Household (13.9%; χ2 = 10.279, OR = 2.6, P = 0.008) and pet shop dogs (11.0%; χ2 = 7.182, OR = 2.0, P = 0.048) had higher occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp., as was the case for G. duodenalis occurrence in experimental dogs (13.4%; χ2 = 9.223, OR = 1.9, P = 0.017). Cryptosporidium canis (n = 42), C. muris (n = 1) and Cryptosporidium rat genotype IV (n = 1) were identified in dogs, while C. felis (n = 21), C. parvum (n = 3), C. muris (n = 1) and Cryptosporidium rat genotype IV (n = 1) were identified in cats. In contrast, the canine-specific assemblages C (n = 27) and D (n = 26) and the feline-specific assemblage F (n = 14) were almost exclusively the only genotypes of G. duodenalis in dogs and cats, respectively. There was no significant difference in infection rates of Cryptosporidium spp. and G. duodenalis between diarrheal and non-diarrheal pets. Conclusions While domestic pets in Guangdong are infected with zoonotic Cryptosporidium species, they are mainly infected with host-specific G. duodenalis genotypes. Risk factors for infections differ between Cryptosporidium spp. and G. duodenalis and between dogs and cats.

This experiment was conducted to study the morphometric and genetic diversity of Tegal, Magelang, and their crossbred ducks. Each ten female about twenty weeks old ducks from Tegal, Magelang, Gallang, and Maggal ducks, respectively, were used as the group materialss. The body weight, chest circumference, body length, shank length, neck length, and pubis width were recorded and tested by analysis of variance of one way classification as the morphometric characteristics. Polymorphism of cytochrome b (cyt b) gene on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was analyzed by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Genetic distance was analyzed based on value of heterozygosity, whereas the phylogeny tree was reconstructed using MEGA6 software. The results showed there were highly significant difference (P<0.01) on body weight, chest circumference, body length, and neck length between population, while shank and pubis width were not significant different. The genetic distance between Gallang and Maggal ducks (0.206) was higher than Tegal and Magelang ducks (0.169). It is concluded that the reciprocal crosses increased the morphometric and genetic diversity of Indonesian local duck population.

Abstract Background Blastocystis is one of the most common intestinal parasites in humans and various animals worldwide. Few studies are available regarding the genetic characterization of Blastocystis infections in humans in China. Methods In the present study, 609 fecal samples were collected from two- to six-year-old kindergarten children in southern Xinjiang and were examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results The infection rate of Blastocystis was 14.3% (87/609); no significant difference was observed among counties and between sexes. Blastocystis subtypes ST1 (n = 38), ST2 (n = 8), and ST3 (n = 41) were identified by sequence analysis of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene. Genetic polymorphisms were observed at the intra-subtype level, including seven variations for ST1 (ST1A to ST1G), four for ST2 (ST2A to ST2D), and two for ST3 (ST3A and ST3B); with ST1F and ST2B being new variations. Conclusions ST1 and ST3 are the two common Blastocystis subtypes in the study area. More extensive studies in both humans and animals in different regions are needed to better characterize the transmission of Blastocystis.

The genus Diplodinium includes 31 species of ophryoscolecid ciliates with two retractable ciliary zones in the anterior end of the body, with no skeletal plates, inclined macronucleus and two contractile vacuoles. They have a broad geographical distribution and low host specificity. The genus has several taxonomic inconsistencies, mainly due to polymorphism of most species. Diplodinium anisacanthum is a case of taxonomic inconsistency in the genus. It presents polymorphism in posterior end of the body, so it is considered a polymorphic species or seven distinct species. This study presents the morphological characterization of six D. anisacanthum morphotypes based on general morphology, morphometric analysis and oral infraciliature characterization and taxonomic notes on the genus Diplodinium. The morphological and morphometric characterization of D. anisacanthum showed great similiarities among morphotypes suggesting that these ciliates constitute a single species with polymorphisms. A brief review conducted highlights the inconsistencies in the taxonomy of the genus Diplodinium and demonstrates the need for recent studies with representatives of the genus. There is no information on how polymorphism of Diplodinium anisacanthum morphotypes correlates to molecular data, since there are only two sequences of this species available in the GenBank database.

ABSTRACT Blood vessels constitute the first organ in the embryo and form the largest network in the body, but sadly are often deadly. Angiogenesis is the process of generating new capillary blood vessels. Vasculogenesis is the term used for spontaneous bloodvessel formation, and intussusception is the term for new blood vessel formation by splitting off existing ones. Angiogenesis is a normal and vital process in growth and development, as well as in wound healing and in granulation tissue. It is also a fundamental step in the transition of tumors from a dormant state to a malignant one, leading to the use of angiogenesis inhibitors. Angiogenesis may be a target for combating diseases characterized by either poor vascularization or abnormal vasculature. Application of specific compounds that may inhibit or induce the creation of new blood vessels in the body may help combat such diseases. In this review, we will present an overview of the knowledge gained in studies related to the identification and characterization of different inhibitors and regulators of angiogenesis and also to highlight briefly the pathological and physiological angiogenesis.
