The harvestmen species Odiellus lendli (Soerensen, 1894), with its genus Odiellus Roewer, 1923, was found in Anatolia. It represents a new record of Turkish harvestmen fauna. The characteristic features of this species are described and illustrated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies on the dorsal integument, ventral habitus, chelicerae, pedipalpus, trident, the ocularium and legs of female specimens are also presented. Localities of the collecting sites are photographed and plotted on a map.

The harvestman species of Lacinius erinaceus Star?ga 1966, recorded for the first time in Turkey, is presented in this paper. The characteristic features of this species are described and illustrated and data regarding collecting sites and distribution all over the world are given. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies on the dorsal integument, dorsal habitus, chelicerae, pedipalpus, trident, the ocularium and legs of the specimens are also presented. Localities of the collecting sites are plotted on a map.

AbstractA method for preparation of alcohol-preserved culicid larvae for Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) studies is described. It is based on dehydration by ethanol-xylol and fast evaporation of xylol in +8o° C. for ten minutes. For taxonomic studies such as examination of pecten teeth, comb scales and microtrichiae in magnifications up to 6oooX the method is suitable. For studies of receptor structures on hair-tufts and microstructures of the body integument alcohol preserved material is less satisfactory. The microstructure of the comb scales is figured and their function discussed. Differences in the ultrastructure of the abdominal hair-tufts are pointed out.

Sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus, from the Rietvlei Dam near Pretoria, South Africa were examined for internal platyhelminth parasites. Two adult cestodes, Polyonchobothrium clarias (stomach) (prev alence 71 %, mean intensity = 5, n = 7) and Proteocephalus glanduliger (anterior intestine) (prevalence 14 %, mean intensity = 2, n = 7), were found in the gut while metacercariae of one larval digenean, Ornithodiplostomum sp. (prevalence 14 %, mean intensity = 140, n = 7), were found encysted in the muscles. The morphology of these species, based on light and scanning electron microscopy as well as histological analysis, and how they differ from previously described specimens, are discussed. Ornithodiplostomum is a new record in southern Africa. Infection levels of the host fish were mild compared to records from previous surveys.

AbstractA special method of preparation of cholesteric liquid crystals is reported, which is useful for the investigation of cholesteric structures with very small pitches. This freeze-etching method makes it possible to observe pitches with scanning electron microscopy without influencing the structure by solvent molecules.

The essential oil was obtained from the aerial flowering parts of Tanacetum fisherae, a new record from Iran, by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Eleven components representing 99.9% of the total oil were identified. 1,8-Cineole (79.9%) was characterized as the principal compound. The essential oil and its main component were tested against nine microbial strains. The result of the bioassays revealed that the oil possess potent antimicrobial property. This may be associated due to the presence of 1,8-cineole in the oil which tested individually and its high activity was observed. Micromorphological studies of hairs by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) exhibited the presence of abundant sessile capitate glandular and medifixed T-shaped eglandular trichomes on the leaves, flowers and achene, giving useful diagnostic characters for identification of this medicinal plant.

Abstract In November 2014 and May 2015, a total of 44 specimens of the South American silver croaker Plagioscion squamosissimus were collected: 30 in Marajó Bay and 14 in the Tapajós River, state of Pará, Brazil. The aim was to investigate the presence of anisakid nematodes and determine their parasitism indices and sites of infection, because of their importance regarding health inspection. Sixty-nine Anisakis sp. larvae were found; among them, 16 larvae in seven fish collected in Marajó Bay and 53 larvae in four fish in the Tapajós River. The parasitism indices of the nematodes collected from the fish in Marajó Bay comprised prevalence (P) of 23%, mean infection intensity (MI) of 2.28, mean abundance (MA) of 0.53, range of infection (RI) of 1-4, and infection site (IS) in the mesentery. The fish from the Tapajós River showed P = 28%, MI = 13.2, MA = 3.8, RI = 1-22, and IS = mesentery and intestine. To assist in taxonomic identification, images of the specimens obtained through optical microscopy with Nomarski's interferential contrast system and scanning electron microscopy were used. This is the first record of Anisakis sp. parasitizing P. squamosissimus.

Necropsy on 15 specimens of white-tufted grebe, Rollandiarolland, caught in the Mar Chiquita and Chascomús lagoons (Buenos Aires province), revealed the presence of Contracaecumovale (Linstow, 1907). This nematode shows a marked specificity for podicipediform birds. The specimens were identified from morphological study on features such as cephalic and esophageal structures and caudal papillae, using both optical and scanning electron microscopy. This is the first record of C. ovale parasitizing R. rolland in Argentina.

AbstractGongylonema neoplasticum was identified in the oesophagus of 14 wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) from Portugal. This is the first record of Gongylonema neoplasticum in a naturally infected lagomorph species in Europe. This paper presents the most relevant measurements of adult worms and some of their surface features seen by scanning electron microscopy. Epidemiological aspects of G. neoplasticum such as geographical distribution, host spectrum and biological features are discussed.

ABSTRACTThe microstructure of commercially available reactionbonded polycrystalline SiC containing 8–10 wt% excess silicon was studied after irradiation by reactor neutrons uitlizing transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). For TEM studies on samples irradiated below 473°K we observe dislocation tangles near grain boundaries or impurities plus isolated dislocations throughout the remainder of the grain, whereas for irradiation temperatures of ≈3730°K the material exhibits copious quantities of “black spot” defects (2–5nm size) and a lower concentration of tangles than 473°K irradiation. The SEM studies of surfaces of samples fractured at 1473°K indicate that the mode of fracture is predominantly transgranular.
