An observation of the flight of a flock of Common Eiders, Somateria mollisima, on 24 October 2012 suggests that, 15 years after construction of the Confederation Bridge connecting New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island (12.9 km in length over the Northumberland Strait), the bridge may still be a partial barrier to bird flight and possibly migration. Although we believe the Common Eiders we observed intended to fly over or under the bridge, none of the 44 Common Eiders crossed the structure during the observation period.

An observation from the bridge of a flock of Black Scoters suggests that, nine years after construction, the 12.9 km Confederation Bridge may still be a partial barrier to bird migration. Only 3 of 18 scoters (16.7%) crossed over the structure during the observation period.

The diplopod fauna of eastern Canada, an area containing all or parts of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland, consists of 6 orders, 15 families, 28 genera, and 38 species. Eighteen species, 47% of the total fauna, are synanthropic forms introduced chiefly from Europe, and 11 additional millipeds, including another order and family, may occur there, particularly in southern Ontario. The sole Canadian records of Polyzonium mutabile Causey, Aniulus paludicolens Causey, Uroblaniulus stolidus Causey, Pseudopolydesmus branneri (Bollman), Scytonotus granulatus (Say), and Pleuroloma flavipes Rafinesque; the genera Cleidogona, Scytonotus, and Pleuroloma; and the family Cleidogonidae are from Ontario. Pleuroloma flavipes and Uroblaniulus stolidus, in Essex and Algoma counties, are newly recorded from Canada. Polyxenus lagurus (L.), Underwoodia iuloides (Harger), and Trichopetalum lunatum Harger are the only native diplopods in the Maritime Provinces, and Allajulus caeruleocinctus (Wood), a Palearctic introduction, is the only species known from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. The combination Polyzonium cryptocephalum (McNeill) is revived for the dominant eastern polyzoniid species, and Petaserpes rosalbus Cope and Polyzonium divaricatum Loomis are recognized as synonyms of it, the latter being new. Other new synonymies are Polyzonium borealis Loomis and P. quadricauda Loomis with P. mutabile Causey; Julus immaculatus Wood and Parajulus dux Chamberlin with Uroblaniulus canadensis (Newport); and Underwoodia polygama Cook and Collins with U. iuloides. Apheloria virginiensis (Drury), n.comb., is proposed as are subspecific statuses for the common eastern spirobolid millipeds. American species improbable for eastern Canada are identified, and a key to known and potential taxa and pertinent anatomical drawings are provided.

In Canada, the Common Eastern Bumble Bee (BombusimpatiensCresson) is native to southern Ontario and Quebec, but since being developed as a managed commercial pollinator, it has been exported to several other provinces for use in greenhouse and field crop settings. This has enabled this species to become established outside its natural range and it is now established in eastern Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island) and British Columbia. To date, the species has not been detected via field capture in the prairie provinces.Here we report on recent captures ofB.impatiensworkers and males from south-eastern Alberta and suggest that these specimens escaped from nearby commercial greenhouses. The risk that the presence and looming establishment of this species has on native bumble bees in the Canadian prairies is discussed.

In this article, we analyze the politics of emotions within the occupational culture of correctional officers by focusing attention on how sex offenders are constituted as objects of fear and disgust. We draw on in-depth semi-structured interviews with 100 Canadian men and women with experience working as correctional officers in provincial prisons (e.g. New Brunswick, Ontario, Alberta, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island) to understand how sex offenders are viewed within their occupational culture. Utilizing an interpretive hermeneutic approach, this article analyzes Canadian correctional officers’ interpretations of sex offenders. We show the effects of sex offenders’ construction as objects of fear and disgust, in terms of their identities and positionality in the general prison population, and the level of protection and services they receive while in prison.

Pink rot of potato (Solanum tuberosum), caused by Phytophthora erythroseptica, is found wherever potatoes are grown, and in the last decade, it has reemerged as an economically important disease in Canada and the United States. A selection of isolates of P. erythroseptica from major potato-growing regions in North America, namely Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, Canada, and Maine and Idaho, U.S.A., was assessed for genetic diversity with randomly chosen decanucleotide primers which were used to amplify regions of DNA to reveal polymorphisms among templates (random amplified polymorphic DNA [RAPD]). The isolates varied in their geographic origin as well as in their sensitivity to mefenoxam, as determined by an in vitro assay. In three separate RAPD screens (I, II, and III) with 23 isolates of P. erythroseptica chosen from a larger collection, 1,410, 369, and 316 robust, scorable bands were amplified, respectively. However, among the bands amplified in screens I, II, and III, only 3, 1, and 3 bands, respectively, were polymorphic. When three primers yielding polymorphisms were used to screen 106 isolates from Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, or a representative collection of 32 isolates from Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Maine, and Idaho, no major variation was discovered. RAPD markers were not correlated with geographic origin or mefenoxam sensitivity of the isolates. From an evolutionary standpoint, the absence of genetic diversity among the isolates of P. erythroseptica we examined may be attributable to the relatively recent introduction of a small founding population of the pathogen in North America.

In June 1997, butternut canker was found for the first time in New Brunswick, Canada, at Stickney, Carleton County. A fungal isolate recovered from a young branch canker on butternut (Juglans cinerea L.), cultured on potato dextrose agar, produced spores and cultural morphology as previously described (1). This strain was retained as FSC-758 in the Fredericton Stock Culture Collection at the Atlantic Forestry Centre. The disease was also detected at four other locations in Carleton County along the Saint John River watershed within 20 km of the State of Maine. One stem canker examined at Peel, Carleton County, suggests the disease has been present at this site in New Brunswick for at least 7 years. The butternut tree is at the northeastern edge of its natural range in New Brunswick and, prior to the pathogen's detection, was believed to be far enough from infected butternut in the northeastern United States, Ontario, and Quebec to escape infection. Because planted specimens of butternut exist outside the tree's natural range in New Brunswick and in the neighboring provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, efforts are underway to determine how far the fungus has spread in the Maritime Provinces.
