Brachypodium sylvaticum, Slender False Brome, an invasive Eurasian grass, is reported for the first time in Ontario and eastern Canada from Grey County, southern Ontario. The only previous Canadian record is from Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The species is widespread in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, where it is spreading aggressively throughout much of western Oregon. In the eastern U.S.A., known populations are few and localized, although the species will likely spread.

The geometrid moth Hemithea aestivaria (Hübner, 1789) was introduced from Europe to North America, first detected in British Columbia in 1973. Until 2019, its North American range was limited to a restricted area of the Pacific Northwest. Here, we report on the first records of H. aestivaria for eastern North America from three widely separated urban centers in eastern Canada during 2019-2020.

Despite early interest in Neogene floras, primarily Miocene sites associated with Mio–Pliocene volcanic deposits of the Interior Plateau of British Columbia, few systematic accounts of the Miocene macrofloras of British Columbia – or elsewhere in non-Arctic Canada – have been published since the pioneering studies of J.W. Dawson and his contemporaries in the late 19th century. In this report, the Red Lake macroflora from sediments of the middle Miocene Deadman River Formation exposed in the Red Lake diatomite mine north of Kamloops, British Columbia, is illustrated, and a preliminary assessment presented, along with a brief review of Miocene floras from British Columbia and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The Red Lake macroflora contains rare Ginkgo leaves, shoots of Cupressaceae (Cupressinocladus, Metasequoia, Taxodium) and shoots and seeds of Pinaceae (Pseudotsuga, Tsuga), maple (Acer) seeds and leaves, Liquidambar (fruit), Trochodendraceae (Zizyphoides auriculata leaves, Nordenskioeldia interglacialis fruits), leaves of 4 species of red and white oaks (Quercus columbiana, Q. prelobata, Q. pseudolyrata, Quercus sp.), leaves of an alder (Alnus harneyana) and birch (Betula thor), chestnut (Castanea spokanensis), beech (Fagus pacifica), sycamore (Platanus dissecta), elm (Ulmus speciosa), leaves of unidentified taxa, fruits of Tilia pedunculata (Malvaceae) and fruits and inflorescences of other unidentified taxa, and leaves of a reed or rush (indet. monocot). The Red Lake middle Miocene climate reconstructed from leaf physiognomy was temperate and mesic, with mean annual temperature ~11–13°C, mild winters (coldest month mean temperature ~3°C), mean annual precipitation 170 −51/+73 cm/yr, and growing season precipitation ~92 cm, with moderate seasonality of precipitation (three wettest months ~51 cm vs. three driest months ~25 cm). The Red Lake flora shows similarities to middle to late Miocene floras from the U.S. Pacific Northwest (i.e., richness in oaks) but is of much lower diversity and lacks key elements common to many of the contemporaneous U.S. Miocene floras (e.g., foliage of Pinaceae esp. Pinus), and is missing taxa detected in the microflora, a pattern likely due to sampling effectiveness at the Red Lake Mine and sampling of different lithofacies for macro- and microfloras.

Those participating in this Congress are aware of the leadership of Rear-Admiral George Henry Richards in mounting the Challenger Expedition, which he himself regarded as the crowning achievement of his career. However, he also has a very special place in the history and development of British Columbia and it can fairly be said that his work in the Pacific Northwest was the major achievement of his sea-going career. His service on the coast covered the short period 1857 to 1863, but these were formative years in the development of the west coast colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia.

During the summer of 1986, plants were collected from University of British Columbia Research Farm at Oyster River, Vancouver Island, and their mycorrhizal status was determined. Of the 60 plant species examined, 44 were always vesicular–arbuscular mycorrhizal, 13 were always nonmycorrhizal, and three varied. Nonmycorrhizal plants were found in species belonging to the following families: Araceae, Caryophyllaceae, Compositae, Cruciferae, Gramineae, Onagraceae, Polygonaceae, and Portulacaceae. The mycorrhizal status of 15 plant species is reported here for the first time. Of these, the nonmycorrhizal species included Lysichitum americanum (Araceae), Stellaria simcoei, Stellaria calycantha (Caryophyllaceae), and Epilobium minutum (Onagraceae), and the mycorrhizal species included Adenocaulon bicolor, Eriophyllum lanatum var. achillaeoides, Grindelia squarrosa var. serrulata (Compositae), Poa gracillima (Gramineae), Brodiaea coronaria, Disporum hookerii (Lilaceae), Polypodium glycyrrhiza (Polypodiaceae), Ranunculus uncinatus (Ranunculaceae), Rosa nutkana var. nutkana (Rosaceae), Collinsia parviflora (Scrophulariaceae), and Viola glabella (Violaceae).

AbstractAdults and larvae of Rhinosimus viridiaeneus Randall observed on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, prefer the inner bark of dead branches of red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) for food. When feeding, the flattened elongated rostrum of the adult is inserted between the papery outer bark and the cambium. The rostrum is also used to prod or flip intruding Rhinosimus away from a feeding site. The larva is described for the first time.

AbstractMorphological, biological, and distributional data are presented for the four Canadian species of Mantispidae. A key for the identification of these species is provided. Climaciella brunnea (Say) is the most frequently collected Canadian species, occurring in southern British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec. Dicromantispa interrupta (Say) comb. nov. is given as a new combination for Mantispa interrupta Say; it is recorded in southern Ontario and Quebec. Dicromantispa sayi (Banks) occurs only in extreme southwestern Ontario. Leptomantispa pulchella (Banks) inhabits the dry Okanagan Valley of British Columbia; it is also known from Ojibway Prairie, Windsor, Ontario. The presence of the latter two species in Canada is published for the first time.

AbstractThe Canadian species of the genus Placusa Erichson are reviewed. Eight species are recorded, of which four constitute new Canadian records (P. despecta Erichson, P. incompleta Sjöberg, P. petulans Casey, and P. vaga Casey) and two are new to science (P. pseudosuecica Klimaszewski sp.nov., and P. canadensis Klimaszewski sp.nov.). Placusa turbata Casey, one of the two species previously recorded from British Columbia, is here considered a synonym of P. tachyporoides (Waltl) and is reported for the first time from eastern Canada (New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec). New data are provided on the systematics, distribution, bionomics, and relationships of selected North American species. A key to the species occurring in Canada is presented with illustrations of the median lobe of the aedeagus, spermatheca, male tergite 8, antennae, and outline drawings of the head and adult forebody for each species. Selected Palearctic species are also illustrated for easy comparison with the closely related Nearctic species. The Canadian distribution is presented on contour maps, and world distribution is discussed for all species. The following lectotypes are designated for the Nearctic species which were described from more than one specimen without former holotype designation: Casey (1893, 1911): P. frosti, P. strata, P. tacomae, P. turbata; Erichson (1840): P. despecta; and Sachse (1852): Oxypoda minuta Sachse. Oxypoda minuta is transferred to the genus Placusa and newly synonymized with P. despecta Erichson (1840).

Larvae of the nematode Salvelinema walkeri (Ekbaum, 1935) and metacercariae of the trematode Crepidostomum metoecus (Braun, 1900) are recorded for the first time from the amphipod Ramellogammarus vancouverensis Bousfield, 1979 (Amphipoda: Gammaridae).The infected amphipods were collected from De Mamiel Creek, southwestern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Brief descriptions are given of both parasites, which as adults live in salmonid fishes. This report provides the first record of an intermediate host for S. walkeri, a swim-bladder parasite of salmonids of the Pacific region of North America, and of an intermediate host of a Crepidostomum species in the Pacific region of Canada.

In July, 1947, a leafhopper was found causing serious injury to the foliage of loganberries in the Brentwood area of Vancouver Island, B.C. A survey made at that time in southern Vancouver Island showed that this species was widely distributed, and that it occurred also on raspberries and blackberries. In 1948 it was again found injuring loganberries on Vancouver Island and was found also in the lower Fraser Valley; and in 1949 it was observed 40 miles north of Victoria, at Cowichan Bay, feeding on wild blackberry. It is probable that this species had been present in the coastal area of British Columbia for some time before it was first observed in 1947 causing economic damage.
