<p><strong>Abstract: </strong>Exclusion Territories are geographical areas under the action of degenerative environmental phenomena of anthropogenic origin, which compromise quality of life in general. One of the greatest examples of such areas is the Guanabara Bay and its surroundings, the scene of some of the worst disastrous incidents and locale of frequent episodes of human misery. This article presents a brief description of the main characteristics of the region, providing some technological suggestions of biogeographic recovery to be adopted by public policies that intend to align themselves with the good practices of ecological economy, sustainability and quality of life. The work falls within the context of macro-engineering <em>cum</em> eco-innovation applied to the preservation and management of water sources and water bodies that serve productive purposes as natural niches and breeding grounds.</p><p><strong>Key words: </strong>Exclusion Territories, Guanabara Bay, waste management, quality of life.</p><p class="-1">===========================================================================</p><p class="-1"><strong>Resumo: </strong>Territórios de Exclusão são áreas geográficas sob ação de fenômenos ambientais degenerativos de origem antropogênica, os quais comprometem a qualidade de vida em geral. Um dos maiores exemplos de zonas desse tipo é a Baía de Guanabara e seu entorno, palco de alguns dos piores incidentes desastrosos e de frequentes episódios da miséria humana. O presente artigo descreve sumariamente as principais características da região, fornecendo algumas sugestões tecnológicas de recuperação biogeográfica a serem adotadas por políticas públicas que pretendam alinhar-se às boas práticas de economia ecológica, sustentabilidade e qualidade de vida. O trabalho se insere no contexto da macroengenharia <em>cum</em> eco-inovação aplicada à preservação e à gestão das fontes hídricas e dos corpos de água que servem a propósitos produtivos como nichos naturais e criadouros.</p><p class="-1"><strong>Palavras-chave: </strong>Territórios de Exclusão, Baía de Guanabara, gestão de resíduos, qualidade de vida.</p>

Abstract The need for better natural resource use is currently increasingly recognised, and high emphasis is given to the circularity of building materials and the reduction of activities with negative environmental impact. Legislation, guidelines, and other documentation play an important role in improving demolition activities and construction and demolition waste (CDW) management. Good practices in CDW handling is not achievable without knowledge about CDW recovery techniques described in guidelines and other documents. Demolition activities in arctic regions could be more challenging due to harsh climate conditions, and therefore the cooperation between Russia, Norway and Finland was established to boost the uptake of good practices in demolition activities and CDW management. The main subject of this article is an overview of presently used demolition practices, CDW management, and verification of areas where practices with lower environmental impact and increase of material circularity could be utilised. Two fundamental documents, namely “EU Construction & Demolition Waste Management Protocol” and “Guidelines for the waste audits before demolition and renovation works of buildings” [1, 2], were published by the European Union (EU) in 2019 and serve as a foundation for changes in demolition activities and CDW management in EU and adventitiously also in the Russian Federation and Norway.

The circular economy (CE) is currently a very widespread paradigm aimed at addressing the climate crisis. However, its notions seem often to be only focused on technical, industrial and economic growth-centric goals, without practically addressing social problems such as inequality and social exclusion. In this context, type B social cooperation (SC-B) emerges in the Italian context as a type of organisation explicitly aiming at addressing social issues. It has historically fulfilled this mandate by pioneering, among others, “circular” processes in the field of waste management. In doing so, it has consolidated a high level of organizational and management capacity, which has made it an exemplary model capable of innovating the CE discourse and including marginalized people while delivering high-quality environmental services. Through evidence gathered integrating different methods and sources (interviews with social cooperatives, literature review, case study research on filed actions), this paper aims to offer a reading of SC-B as a driver for promoting a social turn of CE and local development. Moving beyond waste management and towards waste reuse, SC-B could play an active role in creating local and regional waste transformation and upcycling chains, capable of creating new employment and inclusion opportunities as well as reducing environmental impacts by processing wastes directly in the territory, shortening their treatment chain.

The aim of the paper was to present the ways for activities that municipalities could take to improve their waste management systems. The issue of waste management and shaping social attitudes in terms of their disposal is the domain of local governments. It closely fits the essence of sustainable local development. It is important for every community not only in the context of environmental protection, but also for socio-economic reasons. There is a wide variety of solutions for the disposal of waste. According to the authors, sustainable development of this sphere of human life and activity can be more effectively implemented when the attitudes and opinions of residents are known. It can then be done by searching for and implementing patterns adapted to local conditions. On the example of the Biecz commune located in the Małopolskie province, the functioning of the local waste management system was presented in the light of the existing secondary data and the results of own surveys. Real problems were discussed and ways to overcome them were proposed.

Background: Biomedical waste (BMW) is generated in every health facility, which if not disposed off properly poses a risk for health and environment. Handling, segregation, mutilation, disinfection, storage, transportation and final disposal are vital steps for safe and scientific management of biomedical waste in any establishment. The objective were to assess the biomedical waste management (BMWM) practices and knowledge regarding BMWM  in a tertiary care hospital.Methods: A descriptive study was carried out in the tertiary care hospital during July and August 2014. Hospital waste management practices were observed by making visits to the waste collection sites at different sites of the hospital and for assessment of knowledge regarding waste management a total of 113 health care personnel were interviewed.Results: The overall mean score for “Condition of waste receptacles” was 44.3%. The mean score for segregation of waste was 77%, for mutilation of recyclable waste the mean score was 88% and the disinfection mean score was 72%.  There were some good practices observed like presence of posters regarding disposal of BMW in most places, availability of gloves, masks etc. to the workers collecting BMW .There was no separate route for transport of biomedical waste. The knowledge regarding BMWM was not satisfactory among the participants and scope of improvement is there.Conclusions: While there were some good practices observed, there were inconsistencies observed regarding BMWM in the hospital.
