A 3-dimensional computational fluid dynamics modeling is conducted on a direct injection diesel engine fueled by biodiesel using multi-dimensional software KIVA4 coupled with CHEMKIN. To accurately predict the oxidation of saturated and unsaturated agents of the biodiesel fuel, a multicomponent advanced combustion model consisting of 69 species and 204 reactions combined with detailed oxidation pathways of methyl decenoate (C11H22O2), methyl-9-decenoate (C11H20O2) and n-heptane (C7H16) is employed in this work. In order to better represent the real fuel properties, the detailed chemical and thermo-physical properties of biodiesel such as vapor pressure, latent heat of vaporization, liquid viscosity and surface tension were calculated and compiled into the KIVA4 fuel library. The nitrogen monoxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) formation mechanisms were also embedded. After validating the numerical simulation model by comparing the in-cylinder pressure and heat release rate curves with experimental results, further studies have been carried out to investigate the effect of combustion chamber design on flow field, subsequently on the combustion process and performance of diesel engine fueled by biodiesel. Research has also been done to investigate the impact of fuel injector location on the performance and emissions formation of diesel engine.

Abstract Nanofluid is a colloidal mixture consisting of nano-sized particles dispersed in a liquid medium. It improves heat transfer properties and promotes high energy efficiency in a wide spectrum of engineering applications. In recent years, particularly in the automotive industry, the addition of nanofluid in diesel/biodiesel as an additive for ICE has become an attractive approach to promote enhanced combustion efficiency and emission reduction due to their superior thermophysical properties. Many researchers have previously demonstrated that the addition of nanoparticles in diesel/biodiesel fuel improved the overall engine combustion characteristics. As a whole, this study aims to summarize the recent research findings related to the effect of nanoparticles on the fuel properties and engine combustion efficiency. Furthermore, different types of additive blended with varying fuel properties are also compared and discussed. Lastly, the advantages and prospects of using nanofluid as an additive fuel are summarized for future research opportunities.

Experimental work was done to examine the impact of diesel fuel with alumina nanoparticles on combustion characteristics, emissions and performance of diesel engine. Alumina nanoparticles were mixed with crude diesel in various weight fractions of 20, 30, and 40 mg/L. The engine tests showed that nano alumina addition of 40 ppm to pure diesel led to thermal efficiency enhancement up to 5.5% related to the pure diesel fuel. The average specific fuel consumption decrease about neat diesel fuel was found to be 3.5%, 4.5%, and 5.5% at dosing levels of 20, 30, and 40 ppm, respectively at full load. Emissions of smoke, HC, CO, and NOX were found to get diminished by about 17%, 25%, 30%, and 33%, respectively with 40 ppm nano-additive about diesel operation. The smaller size of nanoparticles produce fuel stability enhancement and prevents the fuel atomization problems and the clogging in fuel injectors. The increase of alumina nanoparticle percentage in diesel fuel produced the increases in cylinder pressure, cylinder temperature, heat release rate but the decreases in ignition delay and combustion duration were shown. The concentration of 40 ppm alumina nanoparticle is recommended for achieving the optimum improvements in the engine’s combustion, performance and emission characteristics.

In order to obtain the foundation to the research on the Diesel Engine YN4100QB combustion process, exhaust, the optimal design of combustion chamber and the useful information for the design of exhaust muffler, the geometric model and mesh model of a type internal combustion engine are constructed by using FIRE software to analyze the working process of internal combustion engine. Exhaust noise is the main component of automobile noise in the study of controlling vehicle noise. It is primary to design a type of muffler which is good for agricultural automobile engine matching and noise reduction effect. The present car mufflers are all development means. So it is bound to cause the long cycle of product development and waste of resources. Even sometimes not only can it not reach the purpose of reducing the noise but also it leads to reduce the engine dynamic. The strength of the exhaust noise is closely related to engine combustion temperature and pressure. The calculation and initial parameters are applied to the software based on the combustion model and theory. According to the specific operation process of internal combustion engine. Five kinds of common operation condition was compiled. It is obtained for the detailed distribution parameters of combusted gas temperature pressure . It is also got for flow velocity of the fields in cylinder and given for the relation of the parameters and crankshaft angle for the further research. At the same time NOx emissions situation are got. The numerical results show that not only does it provide the 3D distribution data in different crank shaft angle inside the cylinder in the simulation of combustion process, but also it provides a basis for the engine combustion ,emission research, the optimization design of the combustion chamber and the useful information for the designs of muffler.

Soot formation phenomenon is far from being fully understood today and models available for simulation of soot in practical combustion devices remain of relatively limited success, despite significant progresses made over the last decade. The extremely high demand of computing time of detailed soot models make them unrealistic for simulation of multidimensional, transient, and turbulent diesel engine combustion. Hence, most of the investigations conducted in real configuration such as multidimensional diesel engines simulation utilize coarse modeling, the advantages of which are an easy implementation and low computational cost. In this study, a phenomenological three-equation soot model was developed for modeling soot formation in diesel engine combustion based on considerations of acceptable computational demand and a qualitative description of the main features of the physics of soot formation. The model was developed based on that of Tesner et al. and was implemented into the commercial STAR-CD™ CFD package. Application of this model was demonstrated in the modeling of soot formation in a single-cylinder research version of Caterpillar 3400 series diesel engine with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Numerical results show that the new soot formulation overcomes most of the drawbacks in the existing soot models dedicated to this kind of engineering task and demonstrates a robust and consistent behavior with experimental observation. Compared to the existing soot models for engine combustion modeling, some distinct features of the new soot model include: no soot is formed at low temperature, minimal model parameter adjustment for application to different fuels, and there is no need to prescribe the soot particle size. At the end of expansion, soot is predicted to exist in two separate regions in the cylinder: in the near wall region and in the center part of the cylinder. The existence of soot in the near wall region is a result of reduced soot oxidation rate through heat loss. They are the source of the biggest primary particles released at the end of the combustion process. The center part of the cylinder is populated by smaller soot particles, which are created since the early stages of the combustion process but also subject to intense oxidation. The qualitative effect of EGR is to increase the size of soot particles as well as their number density. This is linked to the lower in-cylinder temperature and a reduced amount of air.

The diesel engine combustion process is very complex in nature. On the order of milliseconds, a high-pressure liquid spray is injected into a cylinder with a moving boundary. The spray undergoes break-up, dispersion, phase change and combustion. Accurate spray modeling is a prerequisite to modeling the diesel combustion process. Droplet break-up is governed by both primary and secondary break-up mechanisms. The Taylor Analogy Break-Up (TAB) Model was employed, in a self-contained simulation environment, to study the secondary break-up of a droplet flowing in a range of aerodynamic environments. The model, which describes the droplet distortion/break-up in an analogy to a spring-mass-damped system, was not formulated to solve the entire spray from start of injection to combustion, which is typically done with a PDF treatment. The developed simulation code provides a fundamental environment to parametrically study the effects of different break-up forcing functions (aerodynamic etc.) as well as provides the ability to refit power-law expressions that can then be used in phemonological diesel engine simulations. The paper first discusses the key physical mechanisms associated with breakup, the formulation/implementation of the numerical model, demonstrates its use to understand droplet parameter tradeoffs and how it can be used to construct reduced order break-up residence time models. Finally, the model is extended to a multi-DOF formulation to facilitate the understanding of the impact of additional breakup forces, which could be aerodynamic, collision-induced etc., on the droplet.
