As sport specialization continues to shape the youth sport landscape, it is critical for sport management professionals, coaches, parents, and athletes to understand how this trend affects programming and policy development. While youth sport specialization often leads to increased athletic skill in an accelerated time frame, specialization can result in overuse injury, burnout, and delayed social development for children. It is essential that sport management students are aware of the trend in youth sport specialization and the various opportunities available to help educate/collaborate with stakeholders. Furthermore, students need to be exposed to youth sport specialization to better understand how to efficiently manage policy and programs involved in youth, and to understand contemporary research and theory leading to best practices.

Due to ongoing and future world challenges, low-density and rural territories (LDTs) are suffering more and more from unequal economic and social development. Those are characterized by several structural weaknesses that affect their economic and social development as in a vicious circle of decline. Both policymakers and scholars recognise the importance of having more systematic support to entrepreneurship and innovation practices in order to foster the local development of these territories. In Portugal, LDTs cover 75% of the territory but only 19% of the Portuguese population. This chapter aims to contribute to the literature on this topic by providing an overview of the entrepreneurship and innovation in Portuguese low-density municipalities through the analysis of existent literature, policies, data, and best practices in this field, through an in-depth analysis of the Portuguese Centro region. Several recommendations for policymakers are made and several clues for future research are provided.

AbstractThe practice of emergency medicine (EM) has been intertwined with emergency medical services (EMS) for more than 40 years. In this commentary, we explore the practice of translating hospital based evidence into the prehospital setting. We will challenge both EMS and EM dogma—bringing hospital care to patients in the field is not always better. In providing examples of therapies championed in hospitals that have failed to translate into the field, we will discuss the unique prehospital environment, and why evidence from the hospital setting cannot necessarily be translated to the prehospital field. Paramedicine is maturing so that the capability now exists to conduct practice-specific research that can inform best practices. Before translation from the hospital environment is implemented, evidence must be evaluated by people with expertise in three domains: critical appraisal, EM, and EMS. Scientific evidence should be assessed for: quality and bias; directness, generalizability, and validity to the EMS population; effect size and anticipated benefit from prehospital application; feasibility (including economic evaluation, human resource availability in the mobile environment); and patient and provider safety.

Starting from the premise that sustainable development is an overall objective of EU Member States, that can be achieved through international cooperation that aims at economic growth, social development and environmental protection, the European Commission analyzed the socio-economic and investment context of the member states, identified risks and opportunities and made some recommendations. This paper presents the best practices of the European funding system to improve the accountability of business or institutional operators accessing European funds and the measures taken by some Member States for good governance. We emphasize the need to know the socio-economic and investment context by all stakeholders and initiate concrete measures of action to ensure real and sustainable economic growth by identifying feasible and lasting solutions; what is the role of business or institutional operators at local and regional level and how it could ensure good governance at local and regional level by applying for grants.

In July 2015, the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) released a Rapid Response report summary, with a critical appraisal, on discontinuation strategies for patients with long-term benzodiazepines (BDZ) use. The CADTH document is a review of the literature. It includes studies whose intervention is BDZ discontinuation. Also, clinical guidelines, systematic reviews and meta-analyses are included. What emerges from the CADTH guidelines is that the best strategy remains gradual tapering of BDZ with little evidence for the use of adjunctive medications. The results show that simple interventions such as discontinuation letters from clinicians, self-help information and support in general, added to gradual tapering may be associated with a two- to three-fold higher chance of successful withdrawal, compared with treatment as usual. We suggest possible implications for day-to-day clinical practice.

The paper aims to review the dominating literature and recent findings on organizational changes and sustainability strategy. The studies in the spheres of strategic management and organizational theories have common conceptual base but different approaches to the key definitions identification. Sustainability age had transformed the perception of the best practices in markets, the winners in 80-ties were focused on costs leadership, today it is urgent to offer differentiated product that is sustainability-oriented. The studies in sphere of strategic management, organizational theories and social development theories were analyzed to accumulate the knowledge about the sources and content of organizational changes towards sustainability. Two types of barriers to transformation towards sustainability were analyzed through data comparison and previous findings accumulation and generalization. General recommendations for sustainable innovations creation are offered.

This article investigates the possibilities of implementing global education in national education by means of an often referred-to social learning theory 'communities of practice'. The argumentation is supported by research conducted in Finnish comprehensive schools lower level (the first six years of education). The research findings suggest that at the moment in Finland, global education is perceived as a real challenge for practitioners. In conclusion, it is argued that the use of communities of practice as a basis to implement global education perspectives in basic education has good potential to succeed in developing national education policies and in finding best practices for global education.
