RELAP/SCDAPSIM is a nuclear reactor simulator and accident analysis code that has been used in the nuclear energy industry for many years. Currently, Innovative Systems Software is developing a new tool that will show the behavior of the core components during a simulation of an accident. The addition of contour plots for the SCDAP components showing different properties: temperature, hydrogen production, etc. will allow a better understanding of core behavior during a severe accident in a nuclear reactor. The SCDAP components are fuel rods, electrically heated simulator rods, such as those used in the CORA experiments, control rods, a shroud and a BWR blade/box. This paper describes the progress in the development of the contour plot tool based on the OpenGL and FORTRAN90 libraries. The purpose of this tool is help to the user analyze the simulation of an accident and to debug an input file.

Subject Canadian government emissions, energy and environment policy. Significance In February, the government is expected to make approvals decisions for new oil sands projects. Five years after signing the Paris climate accords, Canadian politics are increasingly defined by climate change and the economic and political trade-offs inherent in reducing its associated risks. Impacts Renewed interest and investment in Canada’s nuclear energy industry is likely. Quebec hydroelectricity exports may help north-eastern US states reduce their emissions. The Teck Resources’ Frontier project will likely be approved, but low oil prices might mean it is not completed. If the Conservatives win the next federal election (due by October 2023, but likely earlier), looser emissions policy is likely. Provincial elections pre-2023 will likely see some non-Conservative governments returned, meaning tougher climate action.

The author deals in this paper with contemporary situation and problems of energy and power industry in the Czech Republic with respect to the transition processes since 1989. The paper analyses the roots of structural deformations and concentrates itself on some aspects of production and consumption of primary energy resources and electricity. After historical introduction the paper attempts to analyze the core of energy problem, changes of the overall energy balance, special attention is given to the importance, exploitation and environmental impacts of the coal mining and to the crucial crossway between brown coal and nuclear energy by the production of electricity. Conclusion evaluates main results of transition in the energy industry and deduces strategic courses of the solution of the Czech energy as a part of the general economic development.

A long sought but elusive goal of the energy industry has been the use of stored compressed air to support utility power production during periods of high electrical demand. While only limited success has been achieved, an emerging hybrid technology may offer an unexpected assist. Hybrid-nuclear energy marries the helium gas reactor with a combined-cycle power plant. This unique and highly flexible combination readily supports a distinctive adaptation of the basic compressed air technology, with the union poised to overcome the shortfalls that have long hampered the wide-scale deployment of the energy storage facilities.
