One of the key factors for success of sustainable tourism industry in all areas, including rural, is the support of community members. The paper aims to analyze how rural residents’ perceptions of sustainable tourism development (expressed through economic, social, environmental, and physical benefits) can affect residents’ intentions to support tourism. The second aim was to determine if attachment to the particular community and perceived quality of life can have influence on attitudes towards sustainable development of tourism in rural communities. Using a sample of 881 residents living in rural areas of the Republic of Serbia, the results highlighted that perceived values of tourism were important for evaluating how tourism is developed, if it is sustainable for a community, and how it affects quality of residents’ life. The study provided better understanding of factors that can have impact on residents’ attitudes in relation to tourism and highlighted the importance of paying attention to local community as significant player for tourism development, especially in those regions that want to boost its economy by developing sustainable tourism.

Tourism has involved the local communities as a key stakeholders in many tourism destination in Indonesia that are growing due to the phenomenon of digital tourism. In Tebing Breksi Yogyakarta, the growth of tourism sector as a result of the digital tourism phenomenon has made the local people relying on tourism as the main sector to ful l economic needs after the mining ban from the local government. This research conduct the SUSTDI (Stakeholder Understanding of Sustainable Tourism Development Index) method as a tool to asses level of understanding of local communities about sustainable tourism concepts. According to Timur & Getz (2009: 223) about the theory of key stakeholder role, three groups of local community has identi ed such as: host community group, local authority group and tourism industry group. The proportional sampling and strati ed random sampling conducted to determined the amount of representative respondent. The result showed that the local communities as the key stakeholder in Tebing Breksi have a high overall level of understanding about the sustainable tourism concept at the scale 4,19 out of 5,00. Despite of that, the level of understanding on the three of the group respondent on question number 23 implies that the “economic development funds should to be used to promote tourism” as “Medium”. Moreover, tourism planner can use this results to develop a precise education and training program to improve their knowledge about sustainable tourism development.

Abstract. Sustainable tourism must consider three aspects of sustainability, namely economic, social and environmental aspects. To support sustainable tourism development, the community's role in tourism development or Tourism Based Community (TBC) is one of the critical principles that must be fulfilled because it is the component closest to and tied to regional tourism. This research examines the community's role in Girsang Sipangan Bolon District, Simalungun Regency in the development of sustainable tourism. The study uses quantitative methods by collecting data through distributing questionnaires. The observations show that the participation of local communities related to sustainable tourism in Girsang Sipangan Bolon is classified as good with an overall average score of 3.8 out of 4.5 for several indicators of local community participation in sustainable tourism

Sustainable tourism development of the northern part of Serbia in Autonomous Province of Vojvodina aims to achieve ecological, sociocultural, and economic benefits. This means that all entities should be included in the planning and implementation of tourism, such as the local community, tourists, and state entities, while tourism activity should be focused on improving ecological principles and sociocultural conception in a destination. One of the models of this development is seen in specific products that can play a significant role in tourism development. Such an authentic product is wine, which has a very important role in the promotion of tourism. The aim of this paper is to explore Vojvodina—the region of Serbia—as a valuable wine tourism destination in the country, especially the experiences of the wine routes. We use descriptive statistics techniques to summarize and present the data and adopt a correlation analysis technique to describe respondents’ preference on the importance of the wine routes. In the empirical survey, the main conclusion is a positive correlation that by developing wine tourism in Vojvodina, we can influence economic development of the region.

The tourism sector in Albania has been upheld as a government development priority and a promising window for overall local economic development. Although these ambitions have started to shape the governance of the sector, the inherent challenges on a governance level have meant that most of the tourism development on a local level is being led by local initiatives and the private sector service providers. These initiatives are often fueled by entrepreneurial drive and are sustained by a network of local community actors, giving rise to applied models of sustainable tourism development, as shown by numerous agritourist enterprises emerging across Albania. Through a case study approach, this chapter will focus on the role entrepreneurial eco-systems rooted in local communities can play in the development of sustainable tourism models in Albania.

The purpose – The purpose of this project is to investigate what a landscape architecture approach could add to sustainable tourism development. Design – Spatial design is used as tool to investigate the chances and possibilities of sustainable tourism. Methodology – In the project we used research by design as method. This is done by doing a case study on the Dubrovnik Riviera, where we tested our concepts, ideas and methods in practice. During the case study we used participation, the layer approach of de Hoog and Sijmons (1996) and the landscape approach of Koh (2010) as our main methods. Approach – Using the local landscape and culture as base and inspiration for the development of sustainable tourism. Combined with tourism trends and the input of local stakeholders we worked out a spatial plan. Findings – The landscape including natural and cultural qualities can serve as a perfect base for the development of new forms of sustainable tourism: − A touristic region should function as a system, where all villages are working together adding something unique to the whole system − An efficient extensive public transport network and zoning can help developing a region sustainable − A combination between a bottom-up and top-down approach is needed to implement sustainable tourism, creating preconditions for each other to function optimally. So, we can conclude that a landscape-based design approach gives a significant new insight in how sustainable tourism can be developed in practice. The originality of this research – The landscape architecture approach fills the gap between ideas about sustainable tourism and the practical applicability of it. Using the local landscape and culture sets a sustainable framework for developing sustainable tourism and results in a working tourism system led by the local community. Using landscape architecture in sustainable tourism development is a new, but very interesting and promising addition to the current research and concrete development.

Tourism coastal area is one form of application of community-based and sustainable tourism development. Through the development of tourist villages are expected to occur equitable in accordance with the concept of sustainable tourism development. Community participation is important in the implementation of development. In reality there is often a neglect of community participation, so that the community is still the object of the implementation of management. The development of the tourism village is a planned change in which local participation is required holistically. This activity aims: Provides an overview of how the development and management of attractions based on local communities. The development of Suak Indrapuri Village, Aceh Barat Regency, Aceh Province into a tourist village has not fully involved community participation. The challenge in the process of developing the tourist gampong in Suak Indrapuri is the lack of cooperation between local government / related agencies and gampong devices in the whole process of tourism development. Whereas when referring to a clean and sustainable government governance approach the role of the government is expected to be a facilitator by providing greater role and benefits to the local community. Good coordination is able to develop the area. It is desirable that existing natural resources are sustainable without reducing and damaging their quality.

The objective of this study is to examine the issues and challenges of making a geopark status as a destination brand to promote sustainable tourism. It briefly describes the process of obtaining geopark status based on the experience with Langkawi Island, Malaysia which was designated in 2007. 35 individuals were interviewed representing various important stakeholders such as different level of managers of a development authority, National Tourism Organization, tourism operators and local community concerning their expectations, government initiatives, and acceptance towards promoting Langkawi Geopark as a brand. The findings indicate that most of the stakeholders support and accept the Langkawi Geopark as a global brand that recognised by UNESCO. However, most of them are still confused about the Geopark concept in terms of its implementations and the actions needed to protect the brand. More concerted efforts are needed to create the Geopark brand awareness especially among local community and business operators. It is necessary to educate these stakeholders about the benefits of having the geopark status in order to use the brand to promote sustainable tourism development on the island.

In this paper we examined the factors of residents’ support for sustainable tourism development in Mardin city-Turkey, in the context of gender as social structure. We found that people are sensitive about positive and negative effects of tourism, in association with society attachment and involvement, with bigger role for the later. And the perceptions of positive effects reduce their evaluation of the negative effects. Also we found that women are less active in transforming their attitude toward the effects of tourism to behavior toward sustainable tourism. But they are ready, more than men, to support sustainable tourism and ignore its negative effects, in spite of their higher sensitivity for the negative effects. So we recommend raising the role of local community and giving women more chances in the different levels of tourism activities.

This research attempts to evaluate local residents’ satisfaction and support to the development of tourism through economic, environmental and socio-cultural sustainability of tourism. The data was collected with a survey of local residents in Tra Vinh province of Vietnam. The empirical findings demonstrate that local residents’ perceived economic, environmental and socio-cultural sustainability affects both their satisfaction and support to tourism development in the locality. The sustainability of socio-culture is most concerned by local residents. The greatest importance is, this research discussed and offered statistical evidence on the mediating role of local residents’ satisfaction with the development of tourism in the effect of perceived economic, environmental and socio-cultural sustainability on local residents’ support to the development of local tourism. The current study is expected to provide tourism managers with a better understanding of the complicated links among economic, environmental, socio-cultural sustainability, local residents’ satisfaction and their support to tourism development. Therefore, they should pay more attention to tourism satisfaction of local community in order to enhance host residents’ support to the development of local tourism.
