Whitsleblowing is one of the positive practices in organizations that are able to raise the level of integrity among the members of an organization. However, the roles of whistleblowing also inevitably invites a response, especially among members of the organization itself. This is because such practices are viewed as one factor that may be detrimental to the organization in addition to revealing the reporter (whistleblower) to some external threats and intimidation of discrimination within the organization. This paper is an attempt to examine the relationship between perceptions of members of the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) Contingent of Perak through the role of whistleblowing practices to increase the perception of the integrity of the members. Next, identify the purpose of the whistleblowing and its effect on the integrity of the members of the organization. This study used a descriptive quantitative analysis to identify patterns of relationship that exists between the perception of whistleblowing practices with perceptions of increased integrity based on three basic variables of demographic factors, response to whistleblowing and the impact of making the report. The results showed that members of the Perak’s police have a positive perception of whistleblowing practices which are seen to be done in improving the integrity of the members. Keywords: whistleblowing, perception, RMP members, culture, integrity, organization, influence.

ABSTRACTBackground:Converging evidence suggests that subjective cognitive concerns (SCC) are associated with biomarker evidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) prior to objective clinical impairment. However, the sensitivity of SCC reports in early AD may be biased by demographic factors. Here, we sought to investigate whether age, education, and sex influence the relationship between SCC and amyloid (Aβ) burden. Methods:In this cross-sectional study, we examined 252 clinically normal (CN) individuals (57.7% females) enrolled in the Harvard Aging Brain Study, ages 63–90 years (mean 73.7±6) with 6–20 years of education (mean 15.8±3). SCC was assessed as a composite score comprising three questionnaires. Cortical Aβ burden was assessed with Pittsburgh compound B positron emission tomography imaging. A series of linear regression models assessed the potential modifying role of demographic variables with respect to Aβ burden and SCC. A post-hoc mediation model was implemented to further understand the relationship between Aβ burden and SCC via their relationship with education. Results:Age (β = −0.84, p = 0.36) and sex (β = −0.55, p = 0.22) did not modify the relationship between SCC and Aβ burden. Fewer years of education was correlated with greater SCC (r = −0.12, p = 0.05), but the relationship between Aβ burden and SCC was stronger in those with more education (β = 1.16, p < 0.05). A partial mediation effect was found of Aβ burden on SCC via education (b = −0.12, 95% CI [−0.31, −0.02]).Conclusions:These findings suggest that the association between SCC and Aβ burden becomes stronger with greater educational attainment. Thus, SCC may be of particular importance in highly educated CN individuals harboring amyloid pathology.

Social disability in persons diagnosed with mental disorder is one of the factors preventing them from achieving the broadly defined well-being, even when appropriate and effective treatment is applied. Improvement in the field of social disability is therefore one of the main challenges for the mental health and social welfare policy makers. The second version of the Groningen Social Disabilities Schedule (GSDS-II) is widely used in the assessment of social disability, however the relationship between its degree and many of the clinical and demographic factors have not been investigated thoroughly enough. The objective of the study is to assess the degree of social disability using GSDS-II as well as to analyze the relationship between the degree of social disability and clinical, social and demographic factors, in patients with a mental disorder diagnosis of F20–F48 according to ICD-10, aged 18–65, in a day ward and an inpatient ward settings. The paper presents the data gathered from a preliminary sample of 20 patients of both genders diagnosed with mental disorders who gave their informed consent to participate in the study, thus comprising 10% of the targeted total study sample. Our study, performed on a larger, targeted sample, will provide a better insight into the social functioning of persons with a burden of mental disorder. A precise presentation of the social disability shall improve the model of care offered to these persons. Any possible parallel studies in other countries, employing analogical methodology, could allow for a cross-national and cross-cultural comparison of the received outcomes.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

This research aims to determine the relationship between psychological and demographic factors, which are dispositional optimism, and self-efficacy are the psychological factors, meanwhile home, sex and ethnicity as the demographic factors of quality of life in the older adults. The major hypothesis of this research proposed that there are positive relationship from both psychological factors and demographic factors to the quality of life in older adults. This study involved 53 older adult peoples. The result of multiple regression analysis shows that there is a positive relationship from all five variables to the quality of life in older adults as big as 76,5% (Adjusted R2= 0,765). This result means that both the psychological and demographic factors do have effective contributions to the quality of life in older adult people. The results of t-tests are also discussed.

Objective. To determine the molecular characterization and disease-associated complications of beta-thalassemia intermedia (β-TI) patients in Sulaymaniyah province, northeastern Iraq. Methods. A total of 159 β-TI patients from 114 families were enrolled. Detection of β-thalassemia mutations was done by reverse hybridization technique and direct gene sequencing. Also, the clinical and hematological data were collected through an electronic-based medical recording system using a designed comprehensive questionnaire. Results. Nineteen different β-globin gene mutations arranged in 37 various genotypes were determined. The most frequent were IVS-II-I (G>A) (47.2%), followed by IVS-I-6 (T>C) (23.3%) and IVS-I-110 (G>A) (5%). Among disease-related morbidities documented, bone disease amounted to 53% (facial deformity and osteoporosis), followed by endocrinopathies 17.6% (growth retardation and subclinical hypothyroidism), cholelithiasis 13.8%, pulmonary hypertension 11.3%, and abnormal liver function test 7.5%, whereas venous thrombosis, extramedullary hemopoiesis, and leg ulcer were less frequently observed. Age≥35 and female sex were risk factors for cholelithiasis, while age was an independent risk for hypothyroidism and female sex was associated with increased risk for osteoporosis. Mean serum ferritin of ≥1000 μg/L was associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis, whereas chelation therapy was protective for a multitude of other complications. Transfusion, on the other hand, increased the risk of osteoporosis, yet it was protective for cholelithiasis and hypothyroidism. Moreover, splenectomy was protective for cholelithiasis, although it was an independent risk for hypothyroidism. Finally, hydroxyurea was associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis, while it was protective for cholelithiasis. Discussion and Conclusion. β+-thalassemia mutation had contributed to 41.25 of families with a less severe β-thalassemia phenotype in the northeastern part of Iraq, justifying the need to investigate the contribution of genetic modifiers in ameliorating disease severity. In addition, the substantial number of β-TI patients developed disease-related morbidities, which necessitates the need for more appropriate clinical management with earlier intervention.
