An electric current is passed through the interface of liquid gallium and aqueous electrolyte in a square cross-section cell under a background vertical magnetic field. The oscillation increment of surface waves is calculated from potential measurements at variable current strengths. The surface is also visually observed through transparent side walls. No growing surface waves occur for the Sele parameter as high as 1.5. Instead, a quasi-static surface deformation is caused by the rotation of the metal and electrolyte. The maximum height of this surface deformation increases approximately in proportion to the current. Figs 7, Refs 15.

Stability analysis of parametrically driven surface waves in liquid metals in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is presented. Floquet analysis gives various subharmonic and harmonic instability zones. The magnetic field stabilizes the onset of parametrically excited surface waves. The minima of all the instability zones are raised by a different amount as the Chandrasekhar number is raised. The increase in the magnetic field leads to a series of bicritical points at a primary instability in thin layers of a liquid metal. The bicritical points involve one subharmonic and another harmonic solution of different wavenumbers. A tricritical point may also be triggered as a primary instability by tuning the magnetic field.

ABSTRACTElectron microscope phase images, produced by direct reconstruction of the scattered electron wave from a focal series of high-resolution images, were used to determine the nature of defects formed in GaN:Mg crystals. We studied bulk crystals grown from dilute solutions of atomic nitrogen in liquid gallium at high pressure and thin films grown by the MOCVD method. All the crystals were grown with Ga-polarity. In both types of samples the majority of defects were three dimensional Mg-rich hexagonal pyramids with bases on the (0001) plane and six walls on {1123} planes seen in cross-section as triangulars. Some other defects appear in cross-section as trapezoidal (rectangular) defects as a result of presence of truncated pyramids. Both type of defects have hollow centers. They are decorated by Mg on all six side walls and a base. The GaN which grows inside on the defect walls shows polarity inversion. It is shown that change of polarity starts from the defect tip and propagates to the base, and that the stacking sequence changes from ab in the matrix to bc inside the defect. Exchange of the Ga sublattice with the N sublattice within the defect leads to 0.6±0.2Å displacement between Ga sublattices outside and inside the defects. It is proposed that lateral overgrowth of the cavities formed within the defect takes place to restore matrix polarity on the defect base.

Natural convection of a magneto hydrodynamic nanofluid in a porous cavity in the presence of a magnetic field is investigated. The two vertical side walls are held isothermally at temperatures Th and Tc, while the horizontal walls of the outer cone are adiabatic. The governing equations obtained with the Boussinesq approximation are solved using Comsol Multiphysics finite element analysis and simulation software. Impact of Rayleigh number (Ra), Hartmann number (Ha) and nanofluid volume fraction (ϕ) are depicted. Results indicated that temperature gradient increases considerably with enhance of Ra and ϕ but it reduces with increases of Ha.

AbstractIt has been shown that uncoupled surface waves of SH type can be propagated without any dispersion in an electrically conducting semi-infinite elastic medium provided a uniform magnetic field acts non-aligned to the direction of wave propagation. In general, the velocity of propagation will be slightly greater than that of plane shear waves in the medium.
