In this study, we derived the equations describing the dynamics of a magnetic fluid in crossed magnetic fields (bias and alternating probe fields), considering the field dependence of the relaxation times, interparticle interactions, and demagnetizing field has been derived. For a monodisperse fluid, the dependence of the output signal on the bias field and the probe field frequency was constructed. Experimental studies were conducted in a frequency range up to 80 kHz for two samples of fluids based on magnetite nanoparticles and kerosene. The first sample had a narrow particle size distribution, low-energy magneto dipole interactions, and weak dispersion of dynamic susceptibility. The second sample had a broad particle size distribution, high-energy magneto dipole interactions, and strong dispersion of dynamic susceptibility. In the first case, the bias field led to the appearance of short chains. In the second case, we found quasi-spherical clusters with a characteristic size of 100 nm. The strong dependence of the output signal on the particle size allowed us to use the crossed field method to independently estimate the maximum diameter of the magnetic core of particles.

We report on the oxidation of a magnetic fluid. The oxidation results in magnetic super lattice crystals. The “atoms” are hematite (α-Fe2O3) particles with a diameter ø = 6.9 nm and they are covered with a 1-2 nm thick layer of surfactant molecules.Magnetic fluids are homogeneous suspensions of small magnetic particles in a carrier liquid. To prevent agglomeration, the particles are coated with surfactant molecules. The magnetic fluid studied in this work was produced by thermal decomposition of Fe(CO)5 in Declin (carrier liquid) in the presence of oleic acid (surfactant). The magnetic particles consist of an amorphous iron-carbon alloy. For TEM investigation a droplet of the fluid was added to benzine and a carbon film on a copper net was immersed. When exposed to air the sample starts burning. The oxidation and electron irradiation transform the magnetic particles into hematite (α-Fe2O3) particles with a median diameter ø = 6.9 nm.

In relaxor (1-x)SrTiO3-xBiFeO3 ferroelectrics ceramics (x = 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) both intermediate temperatures and Burns temperatures were successfully detected and their behavior were investigated in dependence on an external bias field using an acoustic emission. All these temperatures exhibit a non-trivial behavior, i.e. attain the minima at some threshold fields as a bias field enhances. It is established that the threshold fields decrease as x increases in (1-x)SrTiO3-xBiFeO3, as it previously observed in (1-x)SrTiO3-xBaTiO3 (E. Dul'kin, J. Zhai, M. Roth, Phys. Status Solidi B 252, 2079 (2015)). Based on the data of the threshold fields the mechanisms of arising of random electric fields are discussed and their strengths are compared in both these relaxor ferroelectrics.
