Abstract Jamming/un-jamming, the transition between solid- and fluid-like behavior in granular matter, is an ubiquitous phenomenon in need of a sound understanding. As argued here, in addition to the usual un-jamming by vanishing pressure due to a decrease of density, there is also yield (plastic rearrangements and un-jamming that occur) if, e.g., for given pressure, the shear stress becomes too large. Similar to the van der Waals transition between vapor and water, or the critical current in superconductors, we believe that one mechanism causing yield is by the loss of the energy’s convexity (causing irreversible re-arrangements of the micro-structure, either locally or globally). We focus on this mechanism in the context of granular solid hydrodynamics (GSH), generalized for very soft materials, i.e., large elastic deformations, employing it in an over-simplified (bottom-up) fashion by setting as many parameters as possible to constant. Also, we complemented/completed GSH by using various insights/observations from particle simulations and calibrating some of the theoretical parameters—both continuum and particle points of view are reviewed in the context of the research developments during the last few years. Any other energy-based elastic-plastic theory that is properly calibrated (top-down), by experimental or numerical data, would describe granular solids. But only if it would cover granular gas, fluid, and solid states simultaneously (as GSH does) could it follow the system transitions and evolution through all states into un-jammed, possibly dynamic/collisional states—and back to elastically stable ones. We show how the un-jamming dynamics starts off, unfolds, develops, and ends. We follow the system through various deformation modes: transitions, yielding, un-jamming and jamming, both analytically and numerically and bring together the material point continuum model with particle simulations, quantitatively. A device has been set up to determine quantitatively the weak fluorescence intensities of pigment molecules. It consists of a laser spectrofluorimeter. The excitation beam can be produced with either a He/Cd laser (441.6 nm) or a He/Ne laser (632.8 nm). This system allows us to detect the fluorescence of dilute chlorophyll a or b solutions of the order of 10−12 mol/l. This sensitivity also permits the study of the emission spectra from chlorophyll in monomolecular or solid states, and since a polarization rotator has been incorporated into our apparatus, one may presume some possible orientation of the molecules.

Linear and nonlinear optical study on electrorheological (ER) fluids is reported. The ER fluids under the investigation were glass beads, zeolite and ferroelectrics. The linear optical response of some ER fluids showed sharp changes near critical electric fields. An enhancement of electric field induced second harmonic generations (EFISH) was observed as the function of E2, where E is the external electric field. The said enhancement is considered to be corresponding to a modulation of the material's refractive index associated with the electric field induced polarization of the delocalized electrons. The enhanced nonlinear optical response on the transition between liquid and solid states can be related to the phase transition in ER fluids.

An electron-donating−accepting (D−A) molecule, namely, 4-(1-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BT-SCC) containing carbazole as the donor moiety and benzothiadiazole as the acceptor moiety is prepared. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis elucidated the multiple intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, CH…π, and π…π interplays. Interestingly, the aggregation-induced emission phenomenon is observed for BT-SCC featured with enhanced fluorescent quantum yield from diluted solution of CH2Cl2 (Φ = ca. 0.1) to CH2Cl2/hexane mixed solutions or solid states (Φ = ca. 0.8). Finally, aggregates of BT-SCC are obtained through precipitating from hot and saturated solutions or solvent-vapor methods and the aggregating morphologies could be easily controlled through different preparation methods. Fabulous cube-like micro-crystals and nanospherical structures are obtained, which is established by the synergistic effects of the multiple non-covalent interactions, endowing potential utility in the field of optoelectronic devices.
