Consumer behavior plays an important role in establishing the marketing strategies of a tourism destination. Analysis of traveling motivation offers valuable information regarding the characteristics and trends of tourism demand. In this context, the aim of this paper is to determine tourists’ preferences regarding rural tourism destinations. To achieve the purpose of the paper, a survey was conducted among tourists from rural areas of Cluj County. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and statistical tests were applied to determine if there were any significant differences among different groups. The results revealed that the respondents prefer to travel in small groups, especially during summer. They are concerned about the security and safety of the destination, and the price also plays an important role in choosing a tourism destination. Cultural attractions and adventure tourism possibilities are more appreciated by younger respondents. Future research should focus on post-pandemic tourist behavior and new tourist products should be developed to fulfill tourists’ expectations.

Tourism has long been pursued by governments as a means of development in rural areas. Negatively, rural areas have certain characteristics that inhibit their ability to achieve the full benefits of tourism. Consequently, many rural tourism destinations to date have found that the benefits to be gained are over-stated. Stakeholder collaboration has been deemed critical for the success of sustainable tourism. In fact, in the context of rural tourism destinations stakeholder collaboration can be particularly advantageous in addressing specific factors relevant to rural tourism destinations that may inhibit the success of the destination. However, successful attempts to implement stakeholder collaboration have been limited. A growing body of literature reveals that successful stakeholder collaboration relies on numerous elements, which have to be incorporated for the success of the process. The paper reveals how simply attempting to implement stakeholder collaboration is not enough for its success, instead various components need to be incorporated throughout the continuous process, in particular attention is paid to establishing trust across the various stakeholder group.

This study presents a framework to empirically validate the relationship between the tangible and intangible measures on tourism destination marketing efforts. Uniquely, a case study was developed involving two different nature of tourism destinations (semirural and rural) and is incorporated into the framework to assess its moderating effect on the relationships among the predictors and destination marketing efforts. Two hundred and ninety-three usable responses were collected using a questionnaire survey. Partial least squares structural equation modelling was utilized to perform latent variable and multi-group analyses (MGA). The findings revealed that destination appeal was found to be the biggest concern among tourists visiting semirural and rural tourism destinations in Sarawak. For intangible components, both service quality and destination image were found to be significantly related to destination marketing efforts at a semirural tourism destination. Interestingly, for MGA results, it was worthwhile to learn that the relationship between service quality and destination marketing efforts happened to have a stronger impact on semirural than rural tourism destination. Hence, the proposed framework and research findings from this case study have provided significant insights that help various tourism stakeholders to better strategize and position semirural and rural tourism, particularly in the scenario of Sarawak, Malaysia. Future studies can examine this framework and test at other tourism destinations in Malaysia or in some other countries.

Increasing the level of awareness and knowledge of children is one of the families’ main goals and concerns. Informal learning through communication, experience, and objective observation during tourism can be one of the appropriate methods in this field. Particularly tourism in rural environments is a new, tangible, empirical, and observational experience. In this study, using a phenomenological approach, the learning experiences of 22 children in rural tourism destinations in the vicinity of the metropolis of Mashhad, Iran were interpreted through interviews and paintings. The descriptive phenomenological approach is a good qualitative method for studying children’s tourism experiences. Also, analysis of paintings and interviews conducted with children studied in rural tourism destinations showed that the experience of tourism outside the city, viewing life and activity in villages, observing other tourists, and playing in nature, led to the formation and increase of children’s learning. It is about taking responsibility, self-confidence, socialization, respect nature, tolerance, and patience, fostering creativity, and self-protection. The findings show that travel and tourism have a significant impact on increasing children’s environmental and social learning and can be an appropriate guide for parents of children and schools related to raising children in the use of tourism in rural areas as a way of environmental, experimental and observational learning. Thus, informal learning through tourism is a good way to develop children’s awareness and various skills such as familiarity with rural lifestyles, occupations and animals and plants, touching objects, the true size of phenomena, understanding environmental realities, communicating with others.
