Ambient pressure silica aerogel thin films have recently been prepared by exploiting reversible drying shrinkage caused by derivatization of the internal gel surface. Aerogels have porosities of upto 99.9% and due to the small size of the pores (few nanometers), large capillary stresses are produced in gels that are partially saturated with a wetting liquid. As a result of these capillary stresses, the flexible silica network undergoes strain which has been observed using environmental microscopy. This technique allows variation of the equilibrium vapor pressure and temperature, and a simultaneous monitoring of the deformation of the unconstrained film thickness. We have observed >600% deformation during the pore-filling and pore-emptying cycles. In this presentation, we discuss the unique stress-strain behavior of these films.Ref.: Sai S. Prakash, C. This paper presents a novel technique to reduce acoustic crosstalk in capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) arrays. The technique involves fabricating a thin layer of diisocyanate enhanced silica aerogel on the top surface of a CMUT array. The silica aerogel layer introduces a highly nanoporous permeable layer to reduce the intensity of the Scholte wave at the CMUT-fluid interface. 3D finite element analysis (FEA) simulation in COMSOL shows that the developed technique can provide a 31.5% improvement in crosstalk reduction for the first neighboring element in a 7.5 MHz CMUT array. The average improvement of crosstalk level over the −6 dB fractional bandwidth was 22.1%, which is approximately 5 dB lower than that without an aerogel layer. The results are in excellent agreement with published experimental results to validate the efficacy of the new technique.

AbstractThis study is aimed to investigate the effect of carbon nanotubes on the properties of lightweight aggregate concrete containing expanded glass and silica aerogel. Combinations of expanded glass (55%) and hydrophobic silica aerogel particles (45%) were used as lightweight aggregates. Carbon nanotubes were sonicated in the water with polycarboxylate superplasticizer by ultrasonication energy for 3 min. Study results show that incorporating multi-wall carbon nanotubes significantly influences the compressive strength and microstructural performance of aerogel based lightweight concrete. The addition of carbon nanotubes gained almost 41% improvement in compressive strength. SEM image of lightweight concrete shows a homogeneous dispersal of carbon nanotubes within the concrete structure. SEM image of the composite shows presence of C–S–H gel surrounding the carbon nanotubes, which confirms the cites of nanotubes for the higher growth of C–S–H gel. Besides, agglomeration of carbon nanotubes and the presence of ettringites was observed in the transition zone between the silica aerogel and cementitious materials. Additionally, flowability, water absorption, microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and semi-adiabatic calorimetry results were analyzed in this study.
