Psychology researchers have suggested that in addition to its level, self-esteem is also manifested by other psychological components. One such component is contingency, which is the degree to which one’s feeling of self-worth is influenced by evaluative standards. I investigated how contingent self-esteem is related to trait self-esteem using Paradise and Kernis’ Contingent Self-Esteem Scale and Rosenberg’s (trait) Self-Esteem Scale. Data collected from classroom (N = 898) and Internet (N = 655) groups rendered a significant and consistent negative relationship between contingent and trait self-esteem. In addition, higher contingent self-esteem individuals tend to have a greater variability with their trait self-esteem levels; as individuals age, their contingent self-esteem tends to decrease; psychological sensitivity to evaluations is the contingent component most strongly associated with the level of self-esteem; and some evaluative resources, such as appearance, performance, and relationship, can be used by some individuals to boost their self-esteem. Future researchers should consider that the contingency of self-esteem is the psychological component not only related to the stability of self-esteem but also to the level of self-esteem.

The present study examined the relationship between investment in gender ideals and well-being and the role of external contingencies of self-worth in a longitudinal survey of 677 college freshmen. We propose a model of how investment in gender ideals affects external contingencies and the consequences for self-esteem, depression, and symptoms of disordered eating. Specifically, we find that the negative relationship between investment in gender ideals and well-being is mediated through externally contingent self-worth. The model showed a good fit for the overall sample. Comparative model testing revealed a good fit for men and women as well as White Americans, Asian Americans, and African Americans.

This study evaluated the relationship of perfectionism and self-perceptions with burnout and life satisfaction in aesthetic performers (N = 254) recruited in Sweden. Cluster analysis revealed four groups: perfectionistic with maladaptive self-perceptions, perfectionistic (parent-driven) with maladaptive self-perceptions, achievement-oriented with adaptive self-perceptions, and nonperfectionistic with adaptive self-perceptions. Performers in both maladaptive clusters reported characteristics suggesting they were perfectionistic compared to their peers. They also reported relatively high contingent self-worth and low basic self-esteem. In contrast, those in the nonperfectionistic with adaptive self-perceptions cluster scored relatively low on perfectionism and reported relatively high basic self-esteem and low contingent self-worth. The performers in the achievement-oriented with adaptive self-perceptions cluster reported average scores across most variables, moderately high personal standards, and higher basic self-esteem compared with contingent self-worth. Overall, performers in both maladaptive clusters reported the highest burnout and lowest life satisfaction. Study findings underscore the importance of perfectionism and self-perceptions when considering burnout and life satisfaction.

Vermicompost is very useful manure which is becoming popular day by day. However, its perception by the farmers is not yet assessed in the southwestern region of Bangladesh. The main objectives of this study were to determine the farmers’ perception of beneficial effects and limitations of vermicompost and to explore the relationship between selected characteristics of the farmers’ and their perception of beneficial effects and limitations of vermicompost. Data were collected using an interview schedule from randomly selected 60 respondents. Locale was three villages namely Lokhpur, Bollokhpur and Vobna under Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat district. Faceto- face interview was conducted during 7 to 29 May, 2016. Farmers’ perception regarding the beneficial effects and limitations of vermicompost was measured using 5- point Likert type scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS software and farmers’ perception index was calculated. Majority (66.7 percent) of the respondents had moderate perception while 18.3 percent and 15 percent of them had less and high perception, respectively, on the beneficial effects and limitations of vermicompost. Among seven selected characteristics of the respondents, age showed a significant negative relationship with their perception of beneficial effects and limitations of vermicompost while training experience of the respondents showed a significant positive relationship with their overall perception. Thus, arrangement of training could pave the way of high perception of beneficial effects and limitations of vermicompost.Res. Agric., Livest. Fish.5(1): 19-25, April 2018

Background: Self-regulating is a set of processes that controls or alters individuals’ behavior, emotion, and performance. We aimed to evaluate the relation between three components of self-regulating including integrative self-knowledge, mindfulness, self-control, and some variables of mental health and self-conscious emotions. Methods: A total of 233 Iranian university students voluntarily enrolled in the study. Seven questionnaire forms including Integrative Self-Knowledge Scale (ISKS), Attention Awareness Scale (MASS), Short Self Control Scale (SSCS), Costello & Comrey's Anxiety and Depression Scale, Rosenberg Self–Esteem Scale (RSES), Authentic Pride Scale (APS), and other as sham scale (OAS) were distributed to participants. The correlation between self-regulating variables, mental health, and self-conscious emotions were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient test. Results: We found a negative correlation between self-regulating variables, depression, and anxiety. Our data also revealed that self-esteem positively related to integrative self-knowledge, mindfulness, and self-control. Among self-conscious emotions variables, authentic pride had a positive correlation with self-regulating variables whereas feelings of shame appeared a negative relationship with them. Conclusion: Integrative self-knowledge, mindfulness, and self-control as self-regulating components correlated to mental health and self-conscious emotions.

The use of social media due to the development of technology has implications for the tendency to know the activity in their social circle. This tendency is called Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). This study aims to determine the relationship between self-regulation and FoMO in emerging adulthood. By using quantitative correlational research methods, this study involved 99 students of Department of Psychology, Malikussaleh University, Aceh, Indonesia with an emerging adulthood age range. The data in this study was collected using two scales, namely Self-Regulation Scale and FoMO Scale. Data analysis using Pearson Correlation. The results showed that there was no significant association between self-regulation variables and FoMO, indicated by the coefficient r = 0.544 and p = 0.000 < 0.05. This result means that there is a negative relationship between self-regulation and FoMO. Self-regulation contributed to FoMO in 4,00%. There were still 96% of other factors related to FoMO tendency. This research showed that self-regulation is too weak to predict FoMO in emerging adulthood

Abstract. Toxic relationships can cause inner conflict within oneself. This inner conflict can lead to anger, depression, or anxiety. This makes it difficult for those who are involved in it to live a productive and healthy life. This study aims to determine the relationship between expectations and self-esteem on happiness in people who have a toxic relationship with psychological health. The method in this research is correlational quantitative with scale data collection tools, especially the attitude scale in the form of a Likert. The subjects in this study were 49 people. Collecting data used in this research is by distributing instrument questionnaires, Self Esteem Inventory scale which contains twelve items. Meanwhile, to measure happiness the scale used is the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire. The results showed that self-esteem and expectations influence a person's level of happiness. This means that someone's happiness will be high if he has high self-esteem and expectations. However, when experiencing a toxic relationship, self-esteem and expectations will decrease which makes the level of happiness felt low. Keywords: Self-Esteem, Hope, Happiness, Toxic Relationship Abstrak.
