Linking leader–member exchange to employee voice behavior: The mediating role of self-efficacy

Previous studies have found a positive relationship between leader–member exchange (LMX) and employee voice behavior. However, little is known about the psychological mechanisms underlying this association. We examined self-efficacy as a mediator of the linkage between LMX and employee voice behavior by conducting a cross-sectional survey with a sample of 295 leader–follower dyads from a Chinese company. We performed structural equation modeling to analyze the data. Results show that LMX was positively related to employee voice behavior, and self-efficacy partially mediated the link between LMX and employee voice behavior. This research offers insight into the mechanistic processes through which LMX affects employee voice behavior, and indicates that organizations should pay attention to establishing high-quality LMX relationships to facilitate employee selfefficacy as well as voice behavior.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to explore how and when an employee's belief in their voice self-efficacy leads to promotive and prohibitive voice behavior. By banking on social cognitive theory, this study examines perceived influence at work as a mediator and managerial openness as a moderator in the link between voice self-efficacy and the two forms of voice.Design/methodology/approachThis study's data come from 285 Indian information technology (IT) employees by adopting a cross-sectional survey design. The effect of moderator and mediator is examined by employing structural equation modeling in AMOS 22.FindingsThe results reveal that perceived influence at work partially mediates the positive link between voice self-efficacy and the two forms of voice behaviors. The test of moderation also exposes that prohibitive voice is more contingent on managerial openness as compared to promotive voice.Originality/valueThis is one of the initial studies to explore perceived influence at work as a mediator in the association between voice self-efficacy and employee voice behavior. The treatment of voice as a bidimensional construct in this study discloses the difference between the two forms, contributing to the voice literature and inviting further research.

Purpose Despite the increasing prominence of employee voice in organizational innovation and productivity, employees continue to struggle to influence matters that affect them at work. The purpose of this paper is to model work group context and manager behavior as the predictors of employee upward voice. Further, a mediating role of employee psychological safety is examined in this link. Design/methodology/approach With data from 575 employees representing various technology firms in India, the authors test the hypothesized relationships using covariance-based structural equation modeling. Findings Results indicate coworkers upward voice and manager pro-voice behavior to significantly impact employee upward voice with a mediating impact of psychological safety. This implies that perceived psychological safety plays a significant role in explaining the impact, coworkers and manager behavior would have on regulating employee upward voice. Originality/value This study contributes to the employee voice literature from an Indian context, where upward communication is culturally discouraged.

Closeness and compatibility between leaders and subordinates significantly affect the comfort of work, which results in employee performance. Through satisfaction in working, it can create employee engagement, which can contribute to improving employee performance. This study aims to determine the effect of leader-member exchange and personal supervisor fit on employee performance mediated by work engagement on Syariah Bank employees in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The sample in this study amounted to 132 employees using purposive sampling techniques whose data collection uses cross-sectional analysis with the level of analysis of individual samples. This research uses Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to analyze the data. The results showed that the leader-member exchange and person supervisor fit had a positive effect on work engagement, and work engagement had a positive impact on employee performance. Also, this study demonstrates that work engagement is able to mediate the positive influence of leader-member exchange and person supervisor fit on employee performance. For this reason, it can be said that work engagement is an antecedent that shapes employee performance, which is preceded by leader-member exchange and person supervisor fit.

This research aimed to examine the effects of paternalistic leadership on the safety participation of high-speed railway drivers. Survey data were collected from 601 drivers in major Chinese rail companies. Structural equation modeling was conducted to analyze the influence of paternalistic leadership on safety participation via leader–member exchange (LMX). The results indicated that moral leadership directly promotes safety participation. Besides, benevolent leadership was positively associated with safety participation. Also, LMX partially mediates the positive relationship between benevolent leadership, moral leadership, and safety participation. Therefore, paternalistic leadership promotes the safety participation of high-speed railway drivers.

Employees' voice plays a vital role in enhancing organizational achievements. Despite its vitality, existing literature provides that managers usually demonstrate reduced voice solicitation. This study attempts to find the likely effects of managers' reluctance toward employees' voice. Furthermore, employees who cannot raise their voice may suffer from emotional exhaustion, which in turn can lower their perception of Leader-member exchange (LMX). The extant research was carried out on a sample of 240 respondents from telecom sector of Pakistan as manager-employee matched pairs, supports the above arguments. Based on a variance-based structural equation modelling and bootstrapping procedure, results showed that employees' voice behavior and employees' emotional exhaustion serially mediated the relationship between managers' voice solicitation and LMX. The results highlight the need to have an environment in organizations where employees' voice is not denigrated. Finally, the theoretical and managerial implications of the study were presented.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of leader–member exchange quality on creative involvement of teams in creative work through the mediating role of collective energy comprising of affect, cognitive and behavioral energies. Methodology/approach – In total, a sample of 298 participants in 71 teams working for manufacturing companies producing different auto parts in the eastern part of Iran was examined. A conceptual model was developed, and the hypotheses were analyzed by using structural equation modeling (SEM). Finally, the direct and indirect effects of variables were acquired by a path analysis technique. Findings – The results revealed that, in teams, leader-members exchange indirectly impacts involvement in creative work via affective, cognitive and behavioral energies. Furthermore, affective energy play the most mediating role and behavioral energy my negatively affect involvement in creative work. Originality/value – First, this paper makes a significant contribution to the literature of energy through considering a more panoramic view of it at work. This is the first study in which collective energy functions as a mediating factor in teams. Second, it helps to broaden the scope of research on the relationship between leaders and individuals through multi-level analysis.

I examined the relationships among psychological safety, employee voice, and work engagement. Based on a literature review, I hypothesized that psychological safety would directly affect employees' engagement at work, and indirectly affect work engagement via employee voice. A validated survey was used to collect data from 153 employees of a large manufacturing company in China. The results of structural equation modeling offered support for the full mediating role of employee voice in the psychological safety–work engagement relationship. Employees who perceived psychological safety were more likely to exhibit voice behavior; employee voice, in turn, promoted work engagement. These findings extend prior research and shed light on how employees' psychological safety affects their work engagement. Discussion and implications of the results are presented.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to compare and integrate leader-member exchange (LMX) and leader identification (LID) as concurrently functioning mediators between three leadership styles (individual-focused transformational, contingent reward, and benevolent paternalistic) and two citizenship behaviors (helping and taking charge). Design/methodology/approach Data included 395 stable, independent leader-follower dyads from numerous Chinese organizations. Partial least squares structural equation modeling and relative weight analysis were used in data analyses. Findings In established, steady-state leader-member alliances, LMX was the dominant explanation between various leadership styles and helping; whereas LID explained leadership effects on taking charge. Three-stage indirect effects of leadership-LMX-LID-taking charge were found. Also, LMX and LID related to the three focal leadership styles in distinct ways. Research limitations/implications Limitations include cross-sectional data. Strengths include a large, multi-source field sample. Implications include that LMX and LID provide different prosocial motivations; LMX indirectly engenders stronger other-orientation through LID; and the nature of indirect leadership effects via LID is more sensitive to the nature of the focal leadership styles. LMX and LID together provide a package of prosocial motivations. Practical implications Leaders interested in increasing employees’ helping vs taking charge behaviors can be more effective by understanding the different motivational potentials of LMX vs LID. Leaders also need to choose appropriate behavioral styles when they activate LMX vis-à-vis LID. Originality/value This study integrates multiple leadership theories to provide a nuanced account of how social exchange and self-concept explain leadership at the interpersonal level when leadership styles, LMX, and LID are stable.

Although the relationship between workplace fun and employee performance is well-documented, research on the link between workplace fun and voice behavior is still in a nascent stage. Integrating workplace fun, leader–member exchange (LMX), and voice behavior theories, in the current research we examined LMX as a mediator of the link between workplace fun and voice behavior. We conducted a crosssectional survey with a sample of 307 subordinates and 82 supervisors employed by eight Chinese companies, and used structural equation modeling to analyze the data. Results show that workplace fun was related both directly and indirectly (via LMX) to employees' voice behavior. Our findings offer insight into the mechanistic processes through which workplace fun affects employees' voice behavior, and suggest that to promote employees' voice behavior, a fun work environment and high-quality LMX relationship should be established in organizations.

We proposed a theoretical model explaining why workplace fun might enhance the proactive behavior of employee voice, and explored the mediating role of psychological safety in this relationship. Data were collected from a sample of 223 part-time students at three universities located in China, who were taking a Master of Business Administration course. The results of structural equation modeling show that workplace fun had a direct, significantly positive relationship with employee voice behavior, and that there was also an indirect effect through the mediator of psychological safety. These findings shed light on the ways in which workplace fun helps to increase employee voice behavior. Managers of organizations should consider ways to create a work environment that is fun to promote employees' psychological safety and voice behavior. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.
