Reading Visually: Can Art Historical Reading Approaches go Digital?

As the field of digital humanities grows, scholars are translating and adapting their investigative processes to suit the digital environs. Questions about how digital technologies will enhance and transform historical scholarly reading practices have arisen, but they have not been extensively considered from the perspective of visual culture historians and less so from those working on select non-Western cultures. This paper approaches these questions from an Islamic and South Asian art historical perspective, mapping out the particularities of reading historical texts when conducting visual cultural research and considering the implications for the development of future digital research tools.

RESUMO O artigo reflete a respeito das humanidades digitais como produto e sintoma das transformações metodológicas do uso de tecnologias nas atividades de pesquisa. Expõe as relações entre as ciências humanas e as humanidades digitais, estabelecendo, esta última, sob o escopo de uma transdisciplina, interdependente às humanidades. Propõe reflexão a respeito de como a computação auxilia na prática de pesquisa e como problemas teóricos e práticos recebem nova perspectiva através da computação. Destaca as HDs como um novo espaço reflexivo, que abre novas possibilidades para o ensino e pesquisa em humanidades, ao mesmo tempo em que causam transformações metodológicas, técnicas, estruturais e organizacionais no campo. Aponta as HDs como ferramenta de reconfiguração e potencialização da atividade de pesquisa, alertando a respeito do prejuízo de encará-las apenas como aditivo às práticas metodológicas já vigentes. Alerta para as implicações econômicas e de ressonância em relação a aplicação das ferramentas fornecidas pelas humanidades digitais. Expõe que a aplicação da tecnologia, nas humanidades digitais, deve vir acompanhada da reflexão humanista a respeito delas. Indica a necessidade de realização de um mapeamento, a partir de sua literatura e de seu arcabouço prático-conceitual, para que se alcance uma mensuração concreta do escopo das humanidades digitais.Palavras-chave: Humanidades Digitais; Tecnologias Digitais; Métodos de Pesquisa Digital; Recursos Digitais de Pesquisa; Metodologia de Pesquisa Assistida por Computador.ABSTRACT This article considers the digital humanities as a product and symptom of the methodological transformations of the use of technologies in the research activities. The text presents the relations between the human sciences and digital humanities, establishing it under the scope of a transdisciplinar relation, interdependent to the humanities. It proposes a reflection upon how computing assists in the research practice of research and how theoretical and practical problems acquire a new perspective through computation. It highlights HDs as a new area for reflection, which opens new possibilities for teaching and research in humanities, at the same time as they cause methodological, technical, structural and organizational transformations in the field. It points out HDs as a tool for reconfiguration and potentialization of the research activity, alerting against the prejudice of facing them only as an additive to the methodologic practices already in place. It alerts for the economic and resonance implications regarding the application of the tools provided by the digital humanities. It exposes that the application of technology in the digital humanities must be accompanied by the humanistic reflection about them. It indicates the need to carry out a mapping, based on its literature and its practical-conceptual framework, so that a concrete measurement of the scope of the digital humanities can be achieved.Keywords: Digital Humanities; Digital Technologies; Digital Research Methods; Digital Research Tools; Computer Aided Research Methodology.

AbstractInfrastructure for facilitating access to and reuse of research publications and data is well established nowadays. However, such is not the case for software. In spite of documentation and reusability of software being recognised as good scientific practice, and a growing demand for them, the infrastructure and services necessary for software are still in their infancy. This paper explores how quality assessment may be utilised for evaluating the infrastructure for software, and to ascertain the effort required to archive software and make it available for future use. The paper focuses specifically on digital humanities and related ESFRI projects.

Purpose Despite its growing popularity, there is a noticeable absence of references to the inclusion of genealogy and family history studies within the field of digital humanities. New forms of inclusiveness, particularly in production-coding and cultural analysis, closely align genealogy and family history with the core tenants practiced among humanities computing and digital humanities. This paper aims to prove that genealogy as family history should be formally recognized within this cohort, as it can serve as a valuable and innovative partner for advocacy and technological advancement of the field. Design/methodology/approach By examining the literature, genealogy will be defined according to its use in the digital humanities, as well as its use in family history studies. The core tenants of humanities computing and digital humanities will be identified and compared against the research methodology and technological tools used in genealogy and family history research. The comparison will determine how closely the fields align, and if genealogy defined as family history should be used, and included within the field of digital humanities. Findings The progression of genealogy and family history from production to cultural analysis corresponds with the transition of production and coding (influenced by humanities computing) to the inclusion of experimental cultural research adopted by the digital humanities. Genealogy’s use of technological tools, such as databases, text encoding, data-text mining, graphic information systems and DNA mapping, demonstrates the use of coding and production. Cultural analysis through demographic study, crowdsourcing and establishing cultural connections illustrates new methods of scholarship, and connects coding and cultural criticism, serving as a bridge between digital humanities and the humanities at large. As genealogy continues to create new partnerships of a collaborative nature, it can, and will, continue to contribute to new areas of study within the field. As these practices continue to converge with the digital humanities, genealogy should be recognized as a partner and member in the digital humanities cohort. Originality/value Despite its growing popularity, there is a noticeable absence of references to the inclusion of genealogy and family history studies within the field of the digital humanities. The term genealogy resonates differently within the digital humanities, primarily articulating the history of the field over the study and research of family lineage. This study seeks to demonstrate how genealogy and family history can fit within the digital humanities, providing a new perspective that has not yet been articulated in the scholarly literature.

This article focuses on digital humanities and Renaissance studies in Canada, highlighting established projects such as Iter and newer efforts such as Serai, and addressing recent interest in historical GIS. This survey of projects demonstrates how the work of Renaissance studies faculty and graduate students in Canada is increasing accessibility to sources, creating new knowledge environments and spaces for collaboration, and encouraging new ways to map and visualize Renaissance data, with an end result that enhances our understanding of the past and the ways that digital technology is changing humanities scholarship. The article also suggests that from the perspective of graduate students, participation in these endeavours provides not only training in digital technologies but also the opportunity to contribute knowledge to the field in concrete ways and the chance to establish a foundation in methodologies and practices that will shape approaches to Renaissance studies research and teaching in the future. Cet article se penche sur les humanités numériques et les études de la Renaissance au Canada, en présentant des projets établis tels qu’Iter et plus récents tels que Serai, ainsi qu’en examinant l’intérêt plus récent pour le système d’information géographique (SIG) historique. Ce survol de différents projets montre comment le travail de professeurs et d’étudiants aux études supérieures dans le domaine améliore l’accès aux sources, créent des environnements pour de nouvelles connaissances et des espaces de collaboration, et favorisent de nouvelles façons de visualiser des données relatives à la Renaissance, enrichissant ainsi notre compréhension du passé, tout en mettant en lumière les transformations des sciences humaines provoquées par les technologies numériques. Cet article avance également qu’en ce qui concerne les étudiants aux études supérieures, la participation dans ces projets non seulement leur donne de l’expérience en humanités numériques, mais leur donne aussi la chance de pouvoir contribuer de façon concrète à l’avancement des connaissances dans leur domaine. Ces expériences leur donne également l’opportunité de développer une méthode et des pratiques qui détermineront leurs approches dans leur recherche et leur enseignement à venir en études de la Renaissance.

Chapter 1 considers the mechanisms of breaks and continuities in the history of photocollage with regard to gender, genre and locations of display. Collage is commonly celebrated as a twentieth-century art form invented by Dada artists in the 1910s. Yet there was already a vibrant culture of making photocollages in Victorian Britain. From an art historical perspective this can be interpreted as an expression of typical modernist amnesia. The default stance of the early twentieth century’s avant-garde was to be radically, ground-breakingly new and different from any historical precursors. However, there is, when turning to the illustrated press, also a trajectory of continuity and withholding of traditions in the history of photocollage. This chapter has two parts. The first includes a critical investigation of the writings on the history of photocollage between the 1970s and 2010s, focusing on the arguments and rationales of forgetting and retrieving those nineteenth-century forerunners. It includes examples of amnesia and recognition and revaluation. The second is a close study of a number of images that appear in Victorian albums produced between 1870 and 1900 and their contemporary counterparts in the visual culture of illustrated journals and books.

This chapter identifies changes that the printing industry has undergone during the past 25 years as a result of the digital revolution. It also provides a brief historical perspective of the printing industry and how it has evolved. It is undeniable that the computer has had an impact on the development of print media and today it is rare to find any prepress work done without the use of some digital technology. The workflow of a traditional printed piece is described from start to finish and is compared to a more modern digital workflow to familiarize readers with the processes and contrast the old with the new techniques. This chapter will identify common problems that occur in the preparation of print media using digital technologies. In particular, it will explore a variety of problems and solutions related to the use of digital prepress as well as identifying new innovations intended to improve prepress operations in the future.

This chapter presents an anthropological case study of the response to rapidly changing technologies by members of a distributed network of 35 technology-based afterschool programs throughout California. University-Community Links (UC Links) is a collaborative effort among university campuses and local communities to develop a network, both physical and virtual, of afterschool program sites for underserved youth in California. While each UC Links program is a physical setting with its own set of learning activities developed in response to the cultural, linguistic, and educational concerns of the local community, the UC Links network as a whole serves as a larger virtual context for defining and pursuing shared goals and objectives and communicating information about effective uses of new digital technologies for afterschool learning. Using a cultural historical perspective, the authors approach UC Links as a sociotechnical activity system engaged in joint activity, and examine and assess its long-term adaptability and the differential capabilities of its local member sites to innovate in response to successive transformations of emerging technologies.

This chapter considers the history of alcohol in Nuosu Yi society in relation to the formal codification of a Yi heritage of alcohol-related culture, and the question of alcohol in Yi health. The relationship of newly invented tradition to older practice and thought is often obscure in studies that lack historical perspective. Examining the historical narratives associated with the exposition of a Yi heritage of alcohol, this study reveals that those narratives are woven from a tapestry of threads with histories of their own, and they therefore shape present-day heritage work. After a brief overview of ideas about alcohol in contemporary discourses on Yi heritage, the chapter then analyses historical texts to argue that many of these ideas are remarkably similar to ones that emerged in the context of nineteenth and early twentieth century contact between Yi and Han communities.

Abstract Starting from the analysis of Martin Rudwick’s pionieristic The emergence of a visual language for geological science (1976), this Introduction tries to assess how Rudwick’s suggestions were received by a comprehensive review of what has been published on the topic of visual culture in the earth sciences. The analysis includes studies dealing with maps, sections, landscapes, representations of specimens. We show how historians’ curiosity about cartography has grown constantly (e.g. Kenneth Taylor and David Oldroyd). The studies on geological sections include, among others, Rudwick (2005 and 2008), Gordon Craig and Kerry Magruder and recent contributions dealing with Leonardo da Vinci and Athanasius Kircker. The consideration of essays focused on geological views and landscapes include an overview of the outcomes and limits of studies devoted to the representations of the Vesuvius. Studies dealing with the pictures of rocks, minerals and fossils are considered in their relationships with the results of general works on pictures of natural specimens. The review ends with studies by art historians in the field of geological iconography and pointing out less studied aspects and possible future developments, from the modes of visualising data that have arisen with the introduction of digital technologies to the need of a better studies of geological iconography before the 18th century, a period which the studies collected in this issue of Nuncius are concentrated on.
