Over the last decade, educators around the world have paid increasing attention to raising public awareness of the need to make concerted efforts to provide a sustainable future for this planet. Many scientists and eco-activists have done a lot to develop public environmental consciousness using different educational tools. This paper discusses integrating environmental awareness into academic curriculum. It analyses the introduction of an environmental component to the English for the Media course offered at St Petersburg University. The experimental study was conducted for three semesters: in the spring semester of 2019 (February - May 2019), the fall semester of the same year (September - December 2019) and the spring semester of 2020 (February - May 2020). It involved 65 first - and second-year journalism students. Media professionals are responsible for changing the way people look at the environment. Project-based learning helps students to expand their environmental repertoires such as shaping public perception of ‘green consumerism’ as a fashionable trend. The growing awareness of environmental issues requires shaping consumer's mindfulness about obliteration and depletion of natural resources through irresponsible activities. The trash-to-treasure and eco-comics projects are lightweight, exciting and effective tools of raising environmental awareness in future media practitioners and enhancing their scientific writing skills. Using these skills journalists can make their environmental messages accessible to a broader public.

This study examines Australian teachers (n = 268) and parents’ (n = 206) self-reported perceptions of education news coverage and how the coverage affects them. Overall, the participants reported a perception that news coverage of teachers, schools, the education system and standardised testing was generally negative in tone. Participants reported typically feeling demoralised by negative stories and inspired by positive stories. A high importance was placed upon the public perception of education by participants. However, trust in the media reporting of educational issues was low. An exception to this general pattern of findings was that participants did not place as much importance upon the public perception of standardised testing and reported being less affected by negative or positive stories on that topic compared to the other education aspects. This research is one of the few studies to investigate the potential emotional impact that news coverage of education can have on media consumers.

In recent years, post-consumer textile waste has become an important issue that attracts attention from activists, scientists and the media. The production and use of clothing has more than doubled in the last fifteen years due to declining costs, streamlined operations and rising consumption under the influence of fast fashion. According to research, the average European buys as much as 26 kg of textiles each year and discards 11 kg, while a very small share of post-consumer textile waste is recycled. This article presents the findings of a study on household textile waste in the capital of Ljubljana. The research showed that despite the significant declarative environmental awareness of people for sustainable behavior in the field of textile waste, the share of those decreases with exposure to actual behavior. However, there are few people who are completely uninterested in reducing textile waste, as most people are aware of the problem and pay more and more attention to it. The authors study the management of textile waste and its creation by the inhabitants of Ljubljana in the broader context of the influences of fast fashion, as well as the cultural specifics of the Slovenian society.

The paper focuses on the problem of new digital generation’s participation in the media consumption process and first of all in television watching under conditions when the contemporary television audience transforms due to the emergence of mobile digital technologies. The digital generation is the most vivid segment of the society in terms of diverse interests and active media consumption; it possesses new selection opportunities and influences the elder generation. This article aims to define the digital generation’s role in contemporary media processes; identify its current functions and current attitude to traditional media, particularly television, as well as Russian telecontent. Methods of researching the media audience also change. The main object of mediametry measurements is now the process, not the result of media consumption. In practice, however, the audience is still viewed as a homogenous mass, not a dynamic system. That is why “mass” calculations cannot be used to judge specific audience needs. It is important not simply to measure views but also to study the audience, taking into account the content and formats of media texts consumed by it within the telecommunication process. The research applies the expert survey method within homogenous groups of young people and focuses on qualitative properties of media consumption, specifically its motivation structure and audience needs. Results of three expert surveys conducted among 17–27 years old journalism students of the Ural Federal University at various times are presented. The motives of telecontent consumption are defined. The paper reveals that the new digital generation relies on the telecontent posted on various online platforms. The youth have a critical attitude towards broadcast television not only because of competition from the new media but also due to low quality of professional media products. Additionally, representatives of the young media audience participate in mass communication processes not only as consumers but also as creators of their own video content.

The paper deals with professional values of journalism students. The grounds for research are the transformation of values in journalists’ professional activity that occurs under conditions of society mediatization and development of new information and communication technologies. The consequences of this transformation include problems like publication of non-validated / non-authentic information, distortion of facts, imposing a false agenda. Media experts are engaged in active debates on preserving the journalists’ professional ethics. In this regard, a need emerges to study professional and value orientations of students – future journalists who are beginning to get acquainted with this profession at a higher education institution. The object of our research was students from Journalism Faculty of the Ural Federal University and the University for Humanities. The research included an online survey of students (n = 202), as well as two interviews with Faculty Heads for profound understanding of the situation in the contemporary journalism education. The findings evidence that fact checking, accuracy and integrity are among the top professional values of journalism students. A journalist, in students’ view, is an innovator capable of creating unique content; their purpose is disclosing the truth and helping people. We can therefore conclude that students respond to value demands of the media environment and at the same time they are oriented at reproducing the traditional principles of journalism ethics, despite media experts’ doubts of preserving professional values in contemporary journalism.

Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis aktivitas hubungan media yang dilakukan oleh Universitas Islam Indonesia, saat kejadian Tragedi Diksar Mapala UII. Kejadian tersebut merupakan krisis karena tidak diduga, terjadi secara mendadak, dan menimbulkan gangguan pada aktivitas dan citra organisasi. Hubungan media adalah salah satu aktivitas yang penting dalam manajemen krisis, karena media massa mampu mempengaruhi persepsi masyarakat terhadap satu organisasi dalam krisis. Dalam situasi krisis sendiri, persepsi dapat menjadi lebih kuat daripada fakta. Batasan hubungan media dalam tulisan ini adalah dalam aspek penyediaan informasi yang terdiri dari : (1) kualitas narasumber organisasi dan (2) cara organisasi dalam membantu liputan media. Data penelitian ini diperoleh dengan mewawancarai wartawan dari media di Yogyakarta yang meliput Diksar Mapala UII. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa media membutuhkan narasumber pimpinan tertinggi universitas. Informasi yang diperoleh dari humas universitas dirasa masih kurang cukup. Dalam hal upaya organisasi membantu aktivitas liputan, UII dinilai masih kurang cepat dan kurang terbuka dalam memberikan informasi. The purpose of this article is to analyse the media relations activities by Islamic University of Indonesia (UII), related to crisis "Tragedi Diksar Mapala UII". This incident lead to crisis because it is unpredictable, happen suddenly, disturb the organizational activities, and make the organization's image being at risk. Media relations is one important activites in crisis management. It is because mass media could affect the public perception toward an organization. In crisis situation, perception could be stronger than the fact. The limitation of media relations in this article are information subsidies. Information subsidies consist of : (1) the quality of news sources that provided by the organization, and (2) how organization facilitate the news gathering process by the media. The data for this article is being collected from interview with journalist from the mass media in Yogyakarta. The results are media want the top management of the universities as the news sources. The information that being provided by public relations is not enough. The university also lack of quickness and lack of openess.

Environmental awareness needs to be increased because it plays an important role for the survival of life. To find out the level of public awareness of the environment it is necessary to conduct a workshop or environmental awareness training. The purpose of this study is to identify and generate an instrument indicator to measure the environmental awareness. This article looks at a variety of relevant literature in order to explore the aspects that must be present In the instrument to measuring the environmental awareness level. The literature study results are obtained the aspects that must have to consist of two aspects namely pro-environment and not pro-environment, in which indicators are made from the start of knowledge, attitudes and behavior. The implication of this literature review is to provide information and recommend a set of a framework to academics in making instruments measuring the level of public awareness of the environment.

This research aims to develop a learning media as a pilot project for the development of open and distance learning. Learning media developed in the form of android-based applications with project-based learning methods. Media is made by adjusting the objectives of the learning process, therefore the media must have a reference to develop the content of the material to be discussed in it. Content includes RPS, learning modules and assessment grids. Learning media created based on google so that it supports all types of devices to access this module. With the Rapid Application Development (RAD) method the module development stages can be completed in accordance with the planned time. In the module developed there are learning objectives, practical activities instructions, tools and materials, basic theories, exercises and assignments. The material is also given a video sample of the material being studied. The current research has reached the stage of questionnaire filling by students and questionnaire data processing. The results showed a positive response from students evidenced by the normal curve of the assessment that has been carried out. From the data obtained can be used as a reference in the development of interactive learning media that are easy to develop in learning.

The use of polluted Citarum River water can cause various diseases, including diarrhea, skin diseases, respiratory infections, etc. This study examines the causes of Citarum River pollution in terms of how residents care about environmental conservation aspects of the Citarum River. The researchers used qualitative methods using questionnaires to explore public perceptions. This method explores four perceptions covering four main aspects: public perception, community participation, socio-economic community, and sanitation waste aspects. Questionnaire analysis with a bivariate statistical test approach and Cronbach's alpha test has the advantage of being able to clearly describe the updated condition of the Citarum River because the data can be justified. After all, it has a high level of confidence of around 95 percent. The results showed that in terms of public perception of the Citarum River, 68% were good, while in terms of community participation in preserving the Citarum River, 26% of the people also participated well, and 32% participated moderately in the maintenance of the Citarum River. As many as 42% of the community consisting of 27% less participate and 15% do not participate. The results of the questionnaire Socio-economy of the Citarum River community are classified as having a fairly good economic condition 59% and a moderate category 41%. The waste and sanitation questionnaire results showed that public awareness about waste and sanitation was also high. 45% percent of the community has a good awareness of the environment around the Citarum River, and 38% have sufficient awareness.

The article is devoted to identifying the features of using digital technologies in the educational process for training future journalists. Based on the analysis of the educational practice of Russian universities and the theory of digital education, the specifics of creating and applying a digital educational environment in the conditions of training future specialists in the media sphere are determined. The article substantiates the application of a two-stage model of digital education for journalism students based on the principle of a flexible combination of online and offline education based on the educational activity of students.
