Youth orchestras are central to the music education of tens of thousands of children and teenagers throughout the world, yet studies of their social function, cultural significance, and pedagogical value remain largely unexplored. Even if students receive their principal musical training through individual lessons and school ensembles, participating in a separate youth orchestra can be a life-changing experience for many musicians. This article defines youth orchestras in an international context, and then articulates and measures the pedagogical value of them in one particular case study: the ethos and educational outcomes of the Young Australian Concert Artists program of the Australian Youth Orchestra.

This case study reports on an intervention undertaken at a diagnostic and early attention center with a two-year-old pupil with left lateral hemiparesis and difficulties in handling and communication. By applying for four months the Benson Schaeffer's system (Total Communication) with the support of the TEACCH method, we aimed to overcome this pupil’s serious communicative limitations. The methodological procedure used was mixed and the investigation techniques used were the application of a standardized test, interviews, records of observation and documentary analysis. From the test filled in by the mother, which established the initial evaluation of the case, the program was applied, and daily records were kept. At the end of the intervention, the test was completed again and the information was compared. In addition, we interviewed her nanny and we analyzed the documentation provided by the family and the center where she is tended. Results show clear progress on the part of the baby: learning of signs, communication of needs, emission of verbalizations and generalization in different contexts. This promoted in the baby more autonomy and established a solid base from which she will be able to sustain new learnings.

Purpose This study aims to offer a three-pronged reflection on overtourism in large cities such as Barcelona. The objective is to outline how technology can impact on overtourism and eventually, how to tackle the problem using technology. Design/methodology/approach The research design is based on secondary data (literature and online reviews) and a case study of Barcelona. Findings The most significant aspect is the rapid spread of comments and reviews about attractions and venues. Despite the interest in ICT generalisation, these new technologies have a dark side. Closely linked to fashion trends, some tourist destinations find themselves rapidly overbooked. Originality/value Unlike other studies, this paper reveals a dark side of technology and attempts to use technology to mitigate the impacts of overtourism.

Synopsis This video case study exercise uses excerpts from the movie Patton and the HBO series Band of Brothers to juxtapose two military leaders (General George S. Patton and Lieutenant Dick Winters) as they face strikingly similar situations – each interacts with a subordinate experiencing “battle fatigue” (a.k.a. shell shock, PTSD) during the Second World War. Patton appears to lack emotional intelligence (EI) as he apparently loses control and strikes a soldier he believes is demonstrating cowardice. Winters, on the other hand, takes a much different approach when dealing with a subordinate in a similar situation. This case exercise is designed to augment assigned theoretical readings and increase student conceptual and practical insight into the construct of EI. Research methodology The analysis of film and biographies is based on historical figures. Relevant courses and levels The case is best used with undergraduates in management or leadership courses who may lack the contextual background to discuss certain aspects of leadership. Specifically, the case is designed to explore the elements that comprise EI as well as how EI may affect a leader’s effectiveness. The case study can also be used to challenge common conceptions of how EI may manifest and to discuss the potential “dark side” of EI. Theoretical bases This case study exercise centers on the concept of EI, with an emphasis on providing a robust understanding of the concept, including how context may come into play and how EI may have a “dark side.” The exercise could also be used to facilitate discussion of multiple topics normally covered in undergraduate management or leadership courses such as personality, perception and attribution, authentic leadership, toxic leadership, transformational leadership and motivation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to consider the impact of effectuation when used by small suppliers within key account management (KAM) relationships. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory longitudinal case study approach was used to examine a single small supplier operating in the snack foods sector of the UK foods industry, as it entered into a new KAM relationship with a major retailer and undertook four new product development projects. Findings Findings suggest effectuation may positively moderate the ability of a small supplier to enter into a KAM relationship by enabling it to obtain resources and limit risk. However, once within the relationship, the use of effectuation may negatively impact success by increasing the potential for failure to co-create new product development, leading to sub-optimal products, impacting buyer confidence and trust. Furthermore, a failed KAM relationship may impact other customers through attempts to recover revenues by selling these products, which may promote short-term success but, in the long-term, lead to cascading sales failure. Research limitations/implications It cannot be claimed that the findings of just one case study represent all small suppliers or KAM relationships. Furthermore, the case presented specifically concerns buyer-supplier relationships within the food sector. Practical implications This study appears to suggest caution be exercised when applying effectuation to enter into a KAM relationship, as reliance on effectual means to garner required resources may lead to the production of sub-optimal products, which are rejected by the customer. Additionally, a large customer considering entering into a KAM relationship with a small supplier should take care to ensure their chosen partner has all resources needed to successfully deliver as required or be prepared to provide sufficient support to avoid the production of sub-optimal products. Originality/value Findings suggest the use of effectuation within a KAM relationship has the potential to develop a dark side within business-to-business buyer-supplier relationships through unintentional breaches of trust by the selling party.

Abstract. The aim of the present study was to assess the tasks designed by a youth football team coach, as well as to analyze the differences between the independent variable Type of Mesocycle (TMe) and the dependent pedagogical variables influencing the design of training tasks performed during a two-months competitive period in the U-18 category. A total of 89 tasks, distributed in 14 sessions between February (n=8) and march (n=6) were analyzed. The tool utilized for task analysis was the Integral System to Training Tasks Analysis (SIATE, in Spanish), where the following pedagogical variables were registered: Playing situation (SJ), Goalkeeper presence (POR), Playing phase (FJ), Type of content (CONT-G), Sport initiation means (MIE), Opposition level (NO) and Playing role (LJ). The results showed a progression in the complexity of the designed training tasks, finding differences between the analyzed mesocycles. The variables POR and LJ obtained a low grade of association. Designing trainings where different lines of play are worked is essential. Therefore, the SIATE has shown to be an optimal tool for registering and analyzing training tasks in grassroots football.
