Objective: Gelatin is widely used biopolymer in various industries due to its excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability properties. In the present study, gelatin was extracted from fish wastes, as an alternative source. Methods: This biopolymer was extracted from the scales of freshwater fish, Labeo rohita. After extraction, the proximate analysis and physico-chemical analysis of the fish scale gelatin were carried out. This functional polymer was also characterized using different analytical methods, such as UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the evaluation of crystalline and surface morphology, and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for structural determination. Results: The scales of L. rohita yield 24% (dry weight basis) of gelatin, indicating this fish species as potential source of gelatin. The proximate analysis determined was low moisture content (4.2%), ash (1.4%) and high protein (90%) content. The result of the study confirms the effectiveness of extraction method used. Conclusion: The fish scales of L. rohita are found to be a sustainable and renewable source of gelatin with desirable functionalities and it is the best alternative for mammalian gelatin in food and other industries.

Bis-aldehyde monomers 4-(4′-formyl-phenoxy)benzaldehyde (3a), 3-methoxy-4-(4′-formyl-phenoxy)benzaldehyde (3b), and 3-ethoxy-4-(4′-formyl-phenoxy)benzaldehyde (3c) were synthesized by etherification of 4-fluorobenzaldehyde (1) with 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (2a), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (2b), and 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (2c), respectively. Each monomer was polymerized with p-phenylenediamine and 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether to yield six poly(azomethine)s. Single crystal X-ray diffraction structures of 3b and 3c were determined. The structural characterization of the monomers and poly(azomethine)s was performed by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopic techniques and elemental analysis. Physicochemical properties of polymers were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), viscometry, UV–vis, spectroscopy and photoluminescence. These polymers were subjected to electrical conductivity measurements by the four-probe method, and their conductivities were found to be in the range 4.0 × 10−5 to 6.4 × 10−5 Scm−1, which was significantly higher than the values reported so far.

This research is focused on bio-synthesis of Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) using lemon extract to study the effect of various parameters on synthesis and to explore antibacterial activity. The biomolecules present in lemon extract act as self reducing and stabilizing agent. The synthesis of CuNPs was found to be affected by various parameters like volume of the lemon extract, concentration of the precursor and the temperature etc. Preliminary characterization of formation of nanoparticles were done by color change and UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. Elemental composition of the prepared sample was determined via Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) Spectroscopy. Presence of important functional groups associated with biomolecules is well characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM ) revealed the formation agglomerated CuNPs of different shape and sizes and the X-ray diffraction pattern showed the formation of purely crystalline nature of CuNPs. Finally, agar well diffusion method showed that CuNPs have potential antibacterial activity against Gram-ve bacteria compared to Gram +ve bacteria.

The physico-chemical characteristics of attapulgite clay confer appropriate properties to their different industrial uses, such as: Drilling fluid, bleaching of vegetable oils, mineral and animal grease and oil absorbents, pet waste absorbents (pet litter), purification of drinking water etc. The aim of this study was the chemical modification of attapulgite originally from state of Piauí, for applications in polyester-based composites. The unmodified and modified clay were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). In order to evaluate the interaction of clays with organic solvents, the test of Foster swelling with gasoline, diesel and toluene was conducted. The polyester resin-based composite and clay unmodified and modified in different percentages were molded by hand lay up technique and they were characterized by water sorption.

AbstractL-cysteine hydrogen fluoride (LCHF) single crystals were grown from aqueous solution. Single crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, UV-Vis-NIR, and TG-DTA were used to test the grown crystals. The specimen dielectric and mechanical behaviors were also studied. Powder X-ray diffraction of the grown crystal was recorded and indexed. The optical properties of the LCHF crystal were determined using UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was found that the optical band gap of LCHF was 4.8 eV. The crystal functional groups were identified using FT-IR. Second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of the LCHF was three times higher than that of KDP. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and AC conductivity were measured at different frequencies and temperatures.

Nanoforms of the antimicrobial drug substance 2,3-bis-(hydroxymethyl) quinoxaline-N,N′-dioxide with particles sizes between 50 and 300 nm were obtained by cryochemical modification of the initial pharmaceutical substance using a freeze-drying technique and were characterized by different physicochemical methods (FTIR, UV-Vis, 1H-NMR, DSC, TG and X-ray diffraction) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The data obtained from FTIR- and UV–Vis-spectroscopy confirmed the unaltered chemical structure of dioxidine molecules due to the cryochemical modification method. At the same time, X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis data show the change of the crystal structure compared to the parameters of the initial pharmaceutical dioxidine substance. A higher dissolution rate was revealed for cryomodified dioxidine nanoforms. The existence of three polymorphic crystal phases was established for cryomodified dioxidine samples possessed by some thermal activation processes: two anhydrous polymorphic phases, triclinic (T) and monoclinic (M), and one hydrated form (H).

Carbon materials with developed porosity are usually used as supports for platinum catalysts. Physico-chemical characteristics of the support influence the properties of platinum deposited and its catalytic activity. In our studies, we deposited platinum on carbon fibrous like materials obtained from platanus seeds - achenes. The precursor was chemically activated with different reagents: NaOH, pyrogallol, and H2O2, before the carbonization process. Platinum was deposited on all substrates to study the influence of the substrate properties on the activity of the catalyst. Carbon materials were characterized by nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms measurements, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. It was noticed that the adsorption characteristics of carbon support affected the structure of platinum deposits and thus their activity.

AbstractBis(2-aminopyrimidine-N)diaquabis(saccharinato-O)copper(II) di(2-aminopyrimidine), [Cu(sac-O)2(ampym-N)2(H2O)2] · 2ampym was synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, simultaneous TG, DTG, DTA techniques, and X-ray diffraction. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c [a = 7.4697(5), b = 10.1679(5), c = 22.743(2)Å , β = 92.844(5), Z = 2, R = 0.0275, wR= 0.0757, V = 1725.26(19) Å3]. The copper atom is bonded to two ampym N atoms and two sac O atoms as well as to two water O atoms in trans positions in the geometry of a distorted octahedron. There are also two ampym moieties as solvate molecules in the unit cell. The crystal structure is stabilized by N-H· · ·O, O-H· · ·N and C-H· · ·O type hydrogen bonding interactions. Intermolecular π−π interactions between the phenyl rings of ampym groups and C-H· · ·π interactions also support the packing of the molecules. The thermal decomposition of the complex has been studied.

The crystal and molecular structures of four tetrahedral structurally similar [Co(aamp)2X2] complexes (aamp = 4-acetyl-3-amino-5-methylpyrazole, X = Cl, Br, I and NCS) were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis and are discussed in detail. It was found that the different capacity of the ligand X (NCS vs. Cl, Br, I) for the formation of non-bonding contacts influence the mode of molecular association in the solid state. The complexes were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The first step of the thermal decomposition of the compounds was checked and is discussed in the view of the IR spectrum of the intermediate isolated from [Co(aamp)2Br2] by the quasi-isothermal technique.
