<p>This study examined the attitude and experiences of secondary school students towards science and technology in Jalingo metropolis of Taraba state, Nigeria. The population included all senior secondary 2 (SS 2) science students in senior Secondary Schools in Jalingo Metropolis. A total of 350 students (161 females and 189 males) were selected through simple random sampling method. The study used a descriptive survey design. The research instrument was a modified Likert scale questionnaire. The data obtained was analyzed using statistical tools (mean and standard deviation). Results indicated that there is a positive attitude towards science and technology. <em>The result generally showed that students have positive experiences towards science and technology.</em> The results also showed that there is a meaningful difference between males and females points of views on attitude towards science and technology and their experiences. According to this result, males have lower average sum (M=54.24) than the females with (M=55.52). The results of this research provide important information about Jalingo students’ attitude and experience towards science and technology and could be used by science educators for the development of science curricula and science text books.</p>

The study examined the availability of specified activities for teachers and students in the recommended Economics textbooks and also examined the level of appropriateness of graphical illustrations in the recommended Economics textbooks. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population for the study comprised the 14 recommended Economics textbooks by the Ministry of Education in Ogun State senior secondary schools. Four Economics textbooks among those recommended were selected for the study using simple random sampling technique. One research instrument titled Economics “Textbook Assessment Checklist (ETAC)” was used to elicit information on the availability of activities and appropriateness of graphical illustrations in Economics textbooks. The data were analyzed using frequency count and percentages. The result showed that among the recommended textbooks, only Textbook B (New Approach Economics) had the specified activities for teachers and students. The result further showed the level of appropriateness of Textbook D (78%), Textbook B (67%), Textbook C (64%) to be high while Textbook A (42%) was moderate. The study concluded that the specified learning activities were not available in all the textbooks and that the appropriateness of the graphical illustrations in the textbooks were between high and moderate level.

The main purpose of this study was to determine the relationship among locus of control, personality and academic achievements of senior secondary Students in Sokoto metropolis. The samples were drawn from a total of 360 students in seven senior secondary schools purposively selected in Sokoto metropolis. For this study, adopted version of Olumolaye’s self-other motivation scale, an adopted version of Akimboye’s subscale A of adolescent personal data inventory and students' JS III examination results of English, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social studies to measure the variables of locus of control, personality and academic achievements. Four hypotheses were generated and tested in this study. Multiple regression analysis and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient were used to analyze data collected. Result of the study showed that there exist significant relationship among locus of control, personality and academic achievement, a significant relationship exists between the personality of students and their academic achievement. One of the recommendations of this study is that teachers and counsellors should attempt to handle students individually as students vary on the locus of control scale and personality.


This research determined students’ perception of teachers’ characteristics of interest, attitude and subject mastery as required in the teaching of chemistry in senior secondary schools in Abakaliki Education Zone of Ebonyi State. The study made use of a descriptive survey design. The population of the study comprised all the chemistry students in all public secondary schools in Abakaliki Education Zone. From a total population of six hundred and thirty (630) senior secondary II students, a sample of three hundred (300) students was used for the study selected by stratified random sampling technique. This was based on the four local government areas in the Education zone. A structured questionnaire in a four point Likert type format was used for data collection. The instrument had a reliability coefficient of 0.88, which showed a high internal consistency. Three research questions and one hypothesis guided the study. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while t-test statistic was used to test the lone null hypothesis. Results of the study indicated that students perceived to a high extent; teachers’ interest, attitude towards chemistry and mastery of the subject as necessary characteristics in the teaching of chemistry. The hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance was not significant. Based on the results of the study and the educational implications of the results, recommendations were made.

This paper draws on Marcia and Porfeli’s identity status models to examine the relationship between adolescent career identity formation and its contextual aspects. Focus group interviews were conducted with 26 students at two Hong Kong senior secondary schools. It was found that most participants exhibited the career identity statuses of achievement, searching moratorium, or moratorium towards the end of school. Influences that were identified from family, school, and social culture varied across individuals with different career identity statuses. By reporting the findings from an East Asian school setting, the paper provides theoretical and practical implications for career development for senior secondary school students.

Research findings in secondary schools have consistently indicated that geometry is one of the most difficult areas of Mathematics at basic level and students’ attitude towards it has been a factor that is known to influence students’ achievement in mathematics. The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of students’ attitude towards geometry and to find out whether gender difference influences such attitude. Some selected secondary schools in Zamfara state were used for the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design using a questionnaire tagged Geometric Attitude Questionnaire. The population of the study consisted of SS I students in Zamfara state. A sample of 157students was drawn using simple random sampling technique. Descriptive statistics of means and standard deviations were used to answer the research questions while Inferential Statistics of the Mann-Whitney test was used to test the formulated hypothesis. The study revealed that students’ attitude towards geometry was relatively high generally, with male students having much higher positive attitude to geometry than their female counterparts and that difference between them was not statistically significant at α = 0.05 level of significance. It is recommended that teachers should be resourceful in encouraging and helping students in order to build positive attitude by trying to relate geometry to real life situations and also be gender sensitive.

The dwindling general performance of students in mathematics has been a source of concern to all stakeholders in education. This study investigated theavailability and utilization of instructional materials for teaching mathematics in senior secondary schools in Ibadan south-west local government, Oyo state, Nigeria. Tworesearch questions were formulated and descriptivesurveyresearch design was used for the study. Simple random sampling was used to select four schools and a sample size of 100 students participated in the study. Two instruments were developed to generate data for the study. The reliability coefficient values obtained were 0.7and 0.8 respectively. Data analysis involved the use of descriptive statistics. The result shows that 100 (100%) of the respondents indicated that textbooks are available, while 4 (4%) of the respondents claimed that textbooks are not available. Also, 99 (99%) of the respondents indicated that chalkboard are available and adequate, while only 1 (1%) of the respondents claimed that Chalkboard are not available. The instructional materials has mean of 2.2. Again, 20% of the respondents claimed that they highly utilized models, 10% indicated averagely utilized, 40% said slightly utilized while 30% indicated not utilized. From the findings on this study almost allthe respondents identified that textbooks and chalkboard are the most available and been utilisedinstructional materials for teaching mathematics in secondary schools.This implies that most schools still stick to conventional „chalk and talk‟ system of teaching mathematics which may not enable secondary school students to compete with their counterparts in the global world. Therefore, Proper utilization of other instructional materials such as models should be utilized to expose students beyond „chalk and talk‟ system of teaching which will also improve academic performance of students.

This research explored the influence of information sources availability on academic performance of secondary school students using a descriptive survey design. One hundred and fifty senior secondary school students were randomly selected from three secondary schools in Osogbo. Data was collected using a self-structured questionnaire that covers all the variables under study. Percentage was used to answer the research questions while regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses postulated. The findings indicated that information sources (library information, teachers information and textbook information) has significant influence on academics performance of student. The result of the hypotheses showed significant relationship between the independent variables (information sources) and dependent variable (academic performance). The value of F-statistic was 627.253 with p <0.05 shows that the overall model was statistically significant. The result revealed that library information, Teachers information and Textbook information have significant combined impact on academics performance of selected senior secondary school in Osun State. It recommended that The school administration should maintain the existing information sources they have and make request to the government for the provisions of this sources.

Learners play very significant roles in the teaching–learning process. Irrespective of how teachers teach, learners often have their own ways of learning. Three hundred senior secondary school II students selected from 10 senior secondary schools in Ilorin, Nigeria participated in the study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 30 students from each of the 10 purposively sampled senior secondary schools. Data were collected using three instruments, namely, Chemistry Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, Chemistry Metacognition Questionnaire and Chemistry Achievement Test with reliability indices of 0.83, 0.73 and 0.86, respectively. Answers were provided to four research questions each of which has a corresponding hypothesis. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using Pearson Product Moment Correlation, regression and analysis of variance. Findings from the study indicates significant positive relationship among senior secondary school students’ Chemistry self-efficacy, metacognition and their achievement in Chemistry F(2, 297) = 332.482, p < 0.05. The study explored parents, teachers, and students’ beliefs about the use and study of mother tongue (MT) in selected secondary schools in Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted. Twelve public senior secondary schools were randomly selected. Purposive sampling technique was used to select at least 15 literate parents, 12 teachers from different subject areas, and 20 students from each school. Overall, 211 literate parents, 195 teachers and 237 SSII students participated. Three instruments used were: Parents’ Questionnaire (r=0.87), Teachers’ Questionnaire (r=0.90) and Students’ Questionnaire (r=0.87). Data were analysed using frequency count, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Results show that parents, teachers and students have strong beliefs that using the MT to teach will facilitate the learning of English and other subjects and enhance participation in lessons. They also believe that studying the MT as a school subject would promote students’ sense of identity and positive attitude towards the Nigerian culture. Students believe that the MT remains the best language to learn with. The study has shown that the participants have strong beliefs about the pedagogical and sociocultural relevance of the MT in education. There is a positive indication that the main stakeholders (parents, teachers and students) are ready to embrace the study of MT as a subject in the secondary school. It is therefore recommended that the governments should endeavour to invest in the development of the orthographies of the Nigerian languages to make them usable in education.

The authors of this study have attempted to understand whether study habits affect academic achievement among secondary and senior secondary school students of Mysore. It is also attempted to know whether students at secondary level differ from senior secondary level on their study habits. The study was conducted on the sample of 625 students of Mysore City in India using stratified random sampling technique. Results indicated that the study habits facilitate higher academic achievement. Further, it was also found that secondary school students are significantly better than senior secondary students on study habits. The findings are analyzed and explained. Thus, study habit is found to be an important correlate of academic achievement.
