In this paper, an open-switch fault diagnosis method for five-level H-Bridge Neutral Point Piloted (HB-NPP) or T-type converters is proposed. While fault tolerant operation is based on three steps (fault detection, fault localization and system reconfiguration), a fast fault diagnosis, including both fault detection and localization, is mandatory to make a suitable response to an open-circuit fault in one of the switches of the converter. Furthermore, fault diagnosis is necessary in embedded and safety critical applications, to prevent further damage and perform continuity of service. In this paper, we present an open-switch fault diagnosis method, based on the switches control orders and the observation of the converter output voltage level. In five-level converters such as HB-NPP and T-type topologies, some switches are mostly 'on' at the same time. Therefore, the fault localization is quite complicated. The fault diagnosis method we proposed is capable to detect and localize an open-switch fault in all cases. Computer simulations are carried out by using Matlab Simulink and SimPowerSystem toolbox to validate the proposed approach.

This paper proposes a fault diagnosis and tolerant control methods for an open-switch fault caused in a three-phase three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) pulse-width modulation (PWM) active rectifier. The open-switch fault in the three-level NPC active rectifier causes a distortion in the input phase current and a ripple in the DC-link capacitor voltage. Therefore, proper fault diagnosis and tolerant control methods are required to prevent additional failures and performance degradation in the rectifier system. This paper conducted a detailed analysis of the effect of the single open-switch fault on the NPC PWM active rectifier and proposed a fault diagnosis method utilizing the DC link voltage and the phase angle of the input grid voltage. Furthermore, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant control method to reduce the effect of the open-switch fault by compensating a distorted reference voltage. The effectiveness of the proposed fault diagnosis and tolerant control methods are verified through experimental results.

This paper presents a rectifier fault diagnosis method with wavelet packet analysis to improve the fault tolerant four-phase doubly fed brushless starter generator (DFBLSG) system reliability. The system components and fault tolerant principle of the high reliable DFBLSG are given. And the common fault of the rectifier is analyzed. The process of wavelet packet transforms fault detection/identification algorithm is introduced in detail. The fault tolerant performance and output voltage experiments were done to gather the energy characteristics with a voltage sensor. The signal is analyzed with 5-layer wavelet packets, and the energy eigenvalue of each frequency band is obtained. Meanwhile, the energy-eigenvalue tolerance was introduced to improve the diagnostic accuracy. With the wavelet packet fault diagnosis, the fault tolerant four-phase DFBLSG can detect the usual open-circuit fault and operate in the fault tolerant mode if there is a fault. The results indicate that the fault analysis techniques in this paper are accurate and effective.

Fault detection can increase the reliability and efficiency of power electronic converters employed in power systems. Among the converters in the power system, a Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) three-level inverter is most commonly used to drive electric motors. In this paper, a new approach for open-circuit fault detection and location of the NPC three-level inverter for a shifting process using a constant voltage-to-frequency ratio is proposed. In order to diagnose open-circuit fault in as short a time as possible, an adaptive electrical period partition (AEPP) algorithm is proposed to pick single electrical periods from real-time three-phase current signals. The Maximal Overlap Discrete Wavelet Transformation (MODWT) and Park’s Vector Modulus (PVM) are used for feature analysis and normalization of electrical period signals. The statistical characteristics of the electrical period signals are extracted, and a random forest model is constructed to realize the state classification. Compared with the traditional fault diagnosis method, the proposed algorithm finds fault locations quickly and accurately. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed algorithm are verified by experiments.

This paper proposes a new Unified Switch Fault Diagnosis (UFD) approach for two-stage non-isolated DC-DC converters used in energy harvesting applications. The proposed UFD is compared with a switch fault diagnosis consisting of two separate fault detection algorithms, working in parallel for each converter. The proposed UFD is simpler than the two parallel fault diagnosis methods in realization. Moreover, it can detect both types of switch failures, open circuit and short circuit switch faults. It can also be used for any two-stage non-isolated DC-DC converters based on two single switch converters, no matter the converter circuits in each stage. Some selected simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) experimentation results confirm the validity and efficiency of the proposed UFD. Also, the proposed UFD is applied successfully for fault-tolerant operation of a buck/buck–boost two-stage converter with synchronous control and a redundant switch.

This paper proposes a novel fault diagnosis method for rotating machinery based on symptom parameters and Bayesian Network. Non-dimensional symptom parameters in frequency domain calculated from vibration signals are defined for reflecting the features of vibration signals. In addition, sensitive evaluation method for selecting good non-dimensional symptom parameters using the method of discrimination index is also proposed for detecting and distinguishing faults in rotating machinery. Finally, the application example of diagnosis for a roller bearing by Bayesian Network is given. Diagnosis results show the methods proposed in this paper are effective.

To solve the problem of vibration motor fault detection accuracy and inefficiency in smartphone components, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis method based on the wavelet packet and improves long and short-term memory network. First, the voltage signal of the vibration motor is decomposed by a wavelet packet to reconstruct the signal. Secondly, the reconstructed signal is input into the improved three-layer LSTM network as a feature vector. The memory characteristics of the LSTM network are used to fully learn the time-series fault feature information in the unsteady state signal, and then, the model is used to diagnose the motor fault. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method is verified through experiments and can be applied to engineering practice. Compared with the existing motor fault diagnosis method, the improved WP-LSTM diagnosis method has a better diagnosis effect and improves fault diagnosis.
