Background: E-Learning or web-based technology can be used to train undergraduate medical students’ clinicalreasoning skills. Currently, many learning methods are being developed using web-based environment to replacepaper-based because they are more efficient in terms of paper usage and are flexible for a student in accessingmaterials. This study aims to explore student’s working durationaccess time and scores upon the usage of webbasedtest, to compare students’ scores to paper-based test scores, to explore the advantages anddisadvantages, andsuggestions to improve the web-based learning method.Method: This study randomly enlisted 60 medical students of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesiaand divided them into web-based (n = 30) and paper- based test (n = 30) groups. Students answered 15 disastermanagement questions and completed a questionnaire. The scores and times needed to answer the questions werecompared using the Mann-Whitney and Independent Sample tests.Results: The duration to answer in the web-based group was shorter than in paper- based group (p = 0.001), butthe average scores difference was not significant (p = 0.169). In the web-based group, similar numbers of studentsaccessed the website during and after working hours. Survey questionnaire results showed that most students realizedthe advantages of this program and gave appropriate suggestions.Conclusion: Practicing clinical reasoning skills using web-based learning method is more time-efficient comparedto the paper-based test. Its high-accessibility improves the learning interest and motivation of the student, with anequal outcome to the paper-based test.

To cope with the increasing trend of learning demand and limited resources, most universities are taking advantage of Web-based technology for their distance education or e-learning (Montelpare & Williams, 2000). One of the reasons is due to the significant price drop of personal computers in recent decades; the Internet and multimedia have penetrated into most households. Moreover, most students prefer to learn from an interactive environment through a self-paced style. Under the Web-based learning model, students can learn anytime, anywhere because they are not required to go to school on schedule (Appelt, 1997). Meanwhile, universities also enjoy the economic benefit due to the large student base that can share the development cost of course materials and other operational expenses. Gradually, more and more universities follow this similar way to provide online education.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the perception of undergraduate students of United Medical and dental college towards objective structured clinical examination as an assessment tool. MATERIAL & METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study included undergraduate medical students, RESULTS: 153 students who completely filled the proforma were included in study among them 31% were male and 69% were females. Mostly agreed that stations in OSCE were simple and easily interpretable and assessed practical skills thoroughly. Majority of students accepted that skills inquired were taught in clinics, stations were according to course and stations were appropriately timed. 66 % confirmed that adequate instructions were provided before exam. 84.31% believed that OSCE is preferable to viva. 57.51% of candidates stated that examiners during OSCE were attentive and gracious but 20.91 % objected it , while 21.57% remained neutral. Almost half of examinees labelled it as comprehensive clinical assessment .Overall, 67.97 % perceived OSCE as demanding and tough assessment. Finally views of students for statement that OSCE is unbiased, reliable and valid were positive in 50.32%.There was a significant difference in the opinion of male and female( p-value is less than 0.05) in statement that OSCE thoroughly assessed practical skills, stations were according to course of instruction, Adequate instructions were provided before exam, superior and preferable to viva, assists in improvement of clinical skills, demanding and tough and finally OSCE was unbiased, reliable and valid CONCLUSION: OSCE was perceived as fair, comprehensive, un-biased format of examination but believed it was more stressful than traditional examination methods . Data mining is the concept for extracting the appropriate data from the large set of database. In today’s world it is widely used for many applications where learning applications is one of the major part. The e-Learning is the booming technology where anyone can learn everything from any part of the world. It is the digital way of learning the concepts and does not require the help of other persons to do so. It also requires the large space for data storage such as user information, course records and course details and so on. There are lot of learning applications available on the internet among which some might be subjected to frauds. So the security is the demanding thing every users looking for to protect their details. The users also seek for flexibility of using the applications. In perspective of distributed world, the complexity and interoperability of the data brings challenges in e-learning domain.Depends upon learner’s choice, the web based learning modules were developed for the students. Thus, a holistic approach is required for achieving the personalized content since the student groups are heterogeneous in nature. In addition to, the personalized content has to be protected in order to maintain the data integrity and privacy of the users. In this work, we survey about the present scenario of the web-based e-learning systems. Initially, we present the services oriented architecture of the e-learning systems and also clearly explain the different elearning layers.Then, we portray the existing studies processed in web based e-learning systems. Finally, we discuss about the challenges still persists in web-based learning systems. This paper will guide the upcoming researchers in e-learning fields.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of user’s learning style (including accommodators, divergers, convergers, and assimilators) on user’s satisfaction on the web-based learning system and their learning effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach This experimental research used the college students from a technology institute in Taiwan as the subject sources. By using the Kolb’s learning style model, the students are classified as four types of learners: convergers, divergers, assimilators, and accommodators. The authors analyzed the relationships among the different learning styles with their effectiveness of learning and satisfaction of using the web-based learning system. The mediation effect of gender is also presented. Findings This research indicates that: first, the satisfaction of the web-based learning system has significant influence on the learning performance of learners; second, different learning styles learners have no significant effect to the satisfaction on using the web-based learning system; third, learning effectiveness has significant difference among different learning style learners on the web-based learning system; the learning effectiveness of accommodators and divergers was significantly higher than the assimilators; fourth, different learning styles learners show significant difference in gender proportion. In addition to accommodators, whose proportion of women is higher than men, the other three learning styles’ proportions in men are higher than women. Research limitations/implications This study was grounded in the Kolb’s learning style theory. The authors provide implications for academic studies in e-learning research stream that aimed at understanding the role of learning style as well as gender differences in the asynchronous web-based learning system. Practical implications Results from this study provided the implications for students, educators, and e-learning system designers. The design of teaching materials as well as functions of e-learning systems should take learners’ learning style into consideration to ensure the best learning outcome. Originality/value This study examined the students’ learning style as well as gender differences in the asynchronous web-based learning system. An experiment was conducted to ensure the data were collected in a controlled environment, thus, offer the value that most of the prior study lacks.

Web-based learning has become an integral part of contemporary education. Online educational tools and resources are often utilized to facilitate learning and provide captivating learning environments. Opportunities protracted by technological advancements are infinite and these are finding increasing popularity in current medical education system. In this chapter, a “blended” approach, with apt amalgamation of e-learning and an interactive face-to-face session, was innovatively used by the author to augment clinical skills in the MBBS program for undergraduate medical students. A “flipped session” was developed to teach the clinical examination of the human retina using a “direct ophthalmoscope.” Besides adding value to the curriculum and constructively aligning the assessment to learning, the author capitalized on technology to demonstrate a successful application in the preparation of peak performers for the twenty-first century. This also helped the author evolve as a better medical teacher and create a rewarding Gesamtkuntswerk with the course content.

With the proliferation of learning resources on the Web, finding suitable content (using telephone) has become a rigorous task for voice-based online learners to achieve better performance. The problem with Finding Content Suitability (FCS) with voice E-Learning applications is more complex when the sight-impaired learner is involved. Existing voice-enabled applications in the domain of E-Learning lack the attributes of adaptive and reusable learning objects to be able to address the FCS problem. This study provides a Voice-enabled Framework for Recommender and Adaptation (VeFRA) Systems in E-learning and an implementation of a system based on the framework with dual user interfaces – voice and Web. A usability study was carried out in a visually impaired and non-visually impaired school using the International Standard Organization’s (ISO) 9241-11 specification to determine the level of effectiveness, efficiency and user satisfaction. The result of the usability evaluation reveals that the prototype application developed for the school has “Good Usability” rating of 4.13 out of 5 scale. This shows that the application will not only complement existing mobile and Web-based learning systems, but will be of immense benefit to users, based on the system’s capacity for taking autonomous decisions that are capable of adapting to the needs of both visually impaired and non-visually impaired learners.

This special issue of the Knowledge Management & E-Learning: an international journal(KM&EL) aims to stimulate interest in the web based issues in both teaching and learning, expose natural collaboration among the authors and readers, inform the larger research community of the interest and importance of this area and create a forum for evaluating innovations and challenges. We intend to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in developing and enhancing web-based learning environment. The objectives for this attempt are to provide a forum for discussion of ideas and techniques developed and used in web based learning. In addition the issue can also be used for educators and developers to discuss requirements for web-based education. Both theoretical papers and papers reporting implementation models, technology used and practical results are included in the issue.

Due to the increasing adoption of computers and networks, web-based learning (e-learning) has become more feasible and acceptable within the worldwide (De Moor, 2007). The Web, as an essential means of supporting teaching and learning, has become an important application in the field of tertiary education. Most Australian universities adopt the Web and web-based technologies to support their students in both traditional coursework as well as online learning (Straub, 2008). As one indispensible mode of education, web-based learning has brought students and lecturers with a much more convenient way to teach and learn. It serves in a variety of learning activities, such as communication, information retrieval, collaboration, assessment and work management. With a strong confidence in web-based learning, it is believed by a number of researchers that this learning mode will continue to grow and capture a greater share of the tertiary education market.
